Maybe so, but his track record isn’t bad. Red Bull were nothing before he joined, McLaren haven’t won the constructors title since he left and he was heavily involved with Williams domination. Prior to that he was successful with Leyton House and in Indy Cars. I can’t think of any other engineer/ designer that comes close over the last 40 years and counting. In that time he’s been in F1 since 1988 and built 14 championship winning cars.
@@AidanMillward It did, perhaps he’s getting towards the end of his career as well. There’s no guarantee to winning in F1 but his track record is as impressive as any other individual in F1. Since he’s left each team, they all got significantly worse. Even Red Bull are worse today than a few months ago. Williams and McLaren haven’t won a constructors championship since he left. Ferrari and Mercedes have had long dominant periods throughout Neway”s career but he’s generally produced a competitive car without working for a works team that produces engines. Red Bull have finished in the top 3 constructors since 2009 in all but 1 year where they finished 4th with a rubbish engine. I'm still pissed off about the auto-fuel issue. I know the "old Nando" problem, but last year when the car was remotely good, he wrung all he could from it. A motivated Fernando is still crazy fast, and I'm sure he'll be motivated, assuming that the Alonso/Honda relationship wasn't a bridge burnt beyond all repair in the dying throes of Dennis.
I think Fernando looking more ragged this year is more to do with the car's inadequacies. As far as his ability is concerned though, I'm not worried. Give him a good car and a motivated Fernando will get you the results, as shown in early last year, or at Zandvoort and Brazil. Newey will get the car right. The question is, will this whole project gel in time for Fernando to enjoy the rewards. I think he could be a very able number 2 to somebody else, if Papa Stroll drops Lance.
Age catches up with everyone eventually. The natural talent and the short stint pace is still there but his ability to keep a fight going for a full season is doubtful
@@racerx94 That's something which fans accuse him of, but no engineer has actually said so in F1. Besides, it's easily debunked. Fernando is from a generation of drivers who started their careers in an era where there was unrestricted testing. He started off at Renault as a test driver, in fact, and did thousands of miles as a test driver. Also, nowadays drivers aren't really test drivers. They just give feedback to the engineers and let the boffins do their magic. What Aston Martin face is a technical problem. They have excellent engineering talent, trying to get to grips with its new equipment and factory. The "decline" coincided with the transition to the new factory, so I'm sure they'll acclimatise and start improving. Newey, being the genius he is, might actually help speed that up.
😃 Great way to put it! To be fair, as with Toyota it's not for lack of trying. It's just that (as with Toyota) drivers like Sainz (Raikkonen in Toyota's case) rejected the team.
To be fair none of the top drivers wanted to drive for them. They invested the big money in hiring Binotto and Wheatley because 1) They know their car and facilities are shit right now and 2) Building up Sauber is going to take leadership before any top drivers will trust them enough to sign.
@@wiegraf9009 I think that one of Hulkenberg or Bottas is fine, but they really need to team them with a promising young Driver. I know 23 year old WRC champion Kalle Rovanpera is trying out track driving. I'd hire him
@@wiegraf9009 I wouldn't be surprised if Sauber is gutted in a few years and replace with VW motorsports talent like Mercedes essentially did with Honda/Brawn GP. A lot of the top engineers for Porsche and Lamborghini are going to rise to the top. Also wouldn't be surprised if they don't tap their very close relationships with Rimac and Rivian for electric and software knowledge. Like Merc though it's probably still going to take a few years for them to get up to speed.
Newey starts with an excellent relationship with Honda, who are moving over to Aston next year. He has been around long enough to know how to take a team that's close to great and push them over the hill. Lawrence Stroll has invested millions in Aston, building the infrastructure need to take the next step, and invested in the right people. It's the drivers who are the last pieces, and this will be where Lawrence has to make some decisions. Alonso has had an amazing career, but does he become another Graham Hill who stayed around beyond his sell-by date? And Lance Stroll is a driver who can have his days, but it's the vast number of second-rate days that cost the team points. Newey will have to convince Lawrence someday that change has to happen, even if it's uncomfortable
If Verstappen-Perez at RBR is adequate than Verstappen-Stroll at AMR would probably be adequate. It's a shame that Aston Martin didn't even consider replacing Stroll with Sainz for 2025, but it what it is.
Don't forget what Ferrari did to John Barnard, when he was working out of England. With Ferrari politics the way that they were a totally separate team had set themselves up in Maranello and designed a car of their own, and nobody in charge stopped them. With that history who'd risk signing for them, even though I doubt whether the current management would allow it to happen. Also, with Aston's, brand new, set up Newey can walk in there and mold it around him, by putting the people and structures in place to suit his exact needs
The only positive for that sort of arrangement again would be Fred is in charge. And their top boss is pretty hands on. It might be what's needed to affect it positively. 🤷🏻♀️ Though I don't see him going there.

The future at aston martin is filled with great potential and optimism in my opinion, and i agree with you that it will take time, and the driver pairing is more than likely the only thing really holding them back long term, but in a situation like this would you go for experience and race wins alongside young and exciting, or would you go along the lines of solid and dependable alongside a driver one good car away from showing the world how good he really is? But then again this is Lawrence Stroll we’re talking about looks like Lance till 2030 it is 😂
Just my opinion, but I think Newey is the sort of person who first and foremost wants CONTROL over his area of expertise in a working relationship. Ferrari refusing to give him that was an absolute deal breaker. He's there to do the work he loves in the way he loves it, not to collect a paycheque and work as a part time consultant in an external capacity.

FYI: Toyota for 2010 planned to sign Robert Kubica but Pole said himself that it was already done they will go off the F1 after 2009 season. So it means they chosen a top driver in a bad moment...
I had read Newey's book (How to Build a Car), 1 thing that I can extratc from that book is that, when Newey saw a better direction/design (especially when he have data to back it up) he really doesn't like other people to interfere him to go to other direction/design. Hence if Ferrari ask him to work from UK instead of Italy, for sure he does not like it.
On the contrary I don´t think Ferrari wanted him working from afar seeing the experience they had with james Allison a few years ago. I always assumed Newey hated moving places and wanted to stay in England either out of patriotism or having a life built there already. If anything fear of Ferrari politics and backroom deals may have discouraged him more than moving to a vineyard in Italy!

The Daddy Sauce is right, I think there's an Aston press piece called for tomorrow and, also, given Thingy from Auntie has been writing about it last few days must be right. It's an interesting one re Ferrari for sure.... As for Lance, surely they must do the right thing and free up his seat?!
They should have Alonso and another potential race winning driver, but they don't. The car can be poor, but if you have two ALO level drivers you are going to be getting a better package, just in terms of the design phase, not just the results on track. They are having to hold one car back to accommodate for the other driver who cannot keep up, regardless of what the team bosses say.
Ferrari chose to spend their cash on Ham rather than Newey. This was a Presidential (shareholder) decision which has certain merits (although I would have stuck with Sainz...). A-M is now free to look at the very good young drivers in F2/F3 who will give better bang for buck than some of the middle aged guys. I can see Alonso and Stroll in WEC. Alonso is a wonderful driver to seize for WEC. A-M will also benefit from Newey's understanding of Honda. This is a major new partnership which is very interesting which should be able to dodge misunderstandings.
I'm interested to see if his involvement will be not just f1 but the hypercar as well, as I don't follow f1 anymore but have a keen interest in WEC and IMSA.
Going to be interesting , i am somewhat disapointed that Newy is not going to Ferrari but it is what it is. i agree that Aston are going to need to look a their drivers for the futuree as well as other things for this to work out
Current expectations are that the 2026 F1 regulations will result in F1 being dominated by engine performance. And there are some good reasons to temper expectations for Honda's 2026 power unit, for reasons which cannot be solved with Stroll's money. While they may currently have one of the best on the grid, we've also had a power unit development freeze (brought in early by Honda's withdrawl). That allowed the other manufacturers to divert resources to 2026 R&D early. Honda on the other hand had sold its UK power unit facilities to Red Bull, along with key staff. Honda didn't commit to returning to F1 until very late, and crucially after the power unit manufacturer budget cap limit came into force. So not only were they disadvantaged by time (& unable to catch up by spending more), but they were limited in how much they can spend on capital investment. While everyone else did their capital spending on building & upgrading facilities before the budget cap came into force, Honda had to replace those facilities they sold to RB when spending was restricted. (Reportedly those facilities not only operated the power units, but manufactured parts of the electrical systems which Honda does not have the ability to manufacture elsewhere.) So while it's possible that Honda might still be competitive in 2026, the odds are heavily stacked against them (and neither Honda nor Stroll can throw additional money at the problems). As we saw when the current power unit regulations were introduced for 2014, it took a long time for the other manufacturers to catch up with Mercedes (who had made an early start with their R&D), and that was without a PU development budget cap.
Newey and Honda should be a great partnership, I'd guess Max in for 2026. Fantastic new Factory, state of the art SIM and wind tunnel, plus he's getting shares in the company, all toooo good for him to say no. 2026 is going to be all about power units.
I imagine Stroll will be constantly in the top 6 and Nando fighting for wins. Would be great to see the Buzzin' Hornets being toward the pointy end of the grid.
I’ll hope this all works well for Alonso, he’s got so much hidden-gem skill for his age and it’d be great to see him in a top spec car before he finally steps out. Or doesn’t. If there’s anyone I wouldn’t mind do a zillion years in F1 it’s him.
He had said he was leaving back in 2023 or 2022. i can't remember exactly. There were articles about red bull blocking his departure until further down the line in his contract. I think that was because the new car. I don't remember the details, but I do remember this and it was an offseason issue. We knew he was leaving a lot longer back before 2024
Great News ..... Not sure how it will work. As good as Newey is he has such a narrow window of opportunity basically I think he will review and suggest alternatives for 2025 and 26. Its a big step to now own part of the company that you design cars for. Its exciting news lets hope it works for both Alonso and Stroll jnr.
I do wonder how much Lance's seat is a "What do you mean 'tennis'? I bought you the bloody company, you _will_ drive that car!" thing, versus him genuinely wanting to be there and thinking that he's better than he actually is? It's hard to tell. Unfortunately he's only any good about once a year and that's not good enough to win the team the constructor's championship, let alone a driver's one. If Newey looks like he's going to create a corker out of the box, so to speak, it would not surprise me to see Fred going balls to the wall for the WDC. If he didn't get close enough in the first year to give him hope for the second, I see him retiring. As a neutral, and tbh, not the biggest fan of his off-track personality (I admire his talent, no question), I would still like him to win one more race at least before he retires.
Lance chose to race with broken wrists at the start of the 2022 season rather than rest and let them heal. I think that alone shows that he's not being forced into it. Some would argue that it was unnecessary, especially since the 2022 season was the beginning of the current ground effect era and the teams needed as much data and feedback as possible but to me the fact that he knew how important those early races were and still chose to race while being in pain shows his dedication to the team. I don't think he's got the skills to win a championship (he might be able to win a race) but it's wrong to think that he's being roped into the sport by his father.
I refuse to believe that Newey goes to Aston and Lance gets a drive in his cars. I also refuse Newey thrives with Lawrence breathing down his neck. It just doesn’t make sense
It does if Newey is doing it for the pay packet and then sails off into the sunset in a year or 2. I doubt he particularly cares if Aston wins a championship
Endless talk about team orders at McLaren, or the lack thereof. Pretty sure Zac is making sure Piastri doesn't get stolen, but I can't help thinking Aston Honda would be pretty tempting if McLaren were to breech some clause in his contract
News confirmed. Reportedly Newey has also received a stake in the team and is now a shareholder, as part of the deal. I expect that part was important to him, something he wanted back at Williams. (And couldn't get at McLaren or Red Bull.) I wonder if Dorilton were prepared to offer him a stake at Williams? Seems likely they weren't, which may have tipped the balance more than that enormous 30m salary Stroll's giving him. Likewise it would be interesting to know how much Ferrari offered him. They reportedly offered him a 100m contract over a decade ago (but we don't know over how many years that would have been spread).
Newey going to Aston can only mean they are bending over backwards for him. Having Newey in the team would likely be what convinces Stroll to be more hands off with development, or at least stop the team going in weird directions. Alonso does feel like the big question mark but that's also why he's in Aston. It's hard to tell if he finally really is flagging this time or if that car's just not there and I can only hope he holds on to win another title.
Didn’t the Italian authorities want to arrest Newey at one point after Imola 94?? I’m thinking back a long time now so I’m not sure. But I swear I remember a story about him and Frank Williams issuing an arrest warrant as the Senna crash had a criminal investigation into it?? That could be a very good reason for him not wanting to go to Italy, plus the fact he blamed his first marriage breaking up because he was living in the States and said he would never live abroad without his family again.
@@AidanMillward That’s right, thank you for refreshing my old brain. I did remember it getting dropped. That must always be at the back of his mind when these Ferrari talks come up? Not only to have the greatest driver of his generation killed in your car, but to have the Italian authorities wanting to blame you for it. That must of been a really terrible time for him and not something you forget.
newey went to aston because he received shares in the company and has full say in how the f1 department works. he left williams because they told him he had a say in the company, but it turned out that it was fake. he did not like the management setup at mclaren. ferrari was not going to make him a partner in ferrari. remember for 8 years mercedes won the constructors while he was at red bull so it might not be that fast of a turn around. newey will fire stroll and bring in sainz.
2:01 oh, that's bad. Dad jokes to the fore. You know, I kinda wondered. Here's Aidan, with a vid of Newey moving to Aston. I was utterly convinced Newey'd retire. He likes his seaworthy cruiser and, well, only so many years left. How wrong I was. And there's this vid on what's what in the Russia/Ukraine thingy. Oww... As to what's important, I'd go with that. As to what I find interesting, eh... well. Ahem. I'm in trouble here.
I dunno, the opportunity for (statistically) the best designer ever to work with (statistcially) the best team ever and (statistically) the best driver ever just seemed too delicious to pass up. I really, really wish Ferrari had been prepared to get the chequebook out and hash something out with him.
Even Newey doesn't want to navigate Ferrari politics. It's too hard. Aston Martin with full control to shape the technical team as he wishes is far more promising IMO.
I could be wrong about this but I believe Ferrari did approach Newey a few times before but he declined every time because of Ferrari Politics™ (Kimi being paid to basically F off so that Alonso could race for Ferrari is the best example that comes to my mind).
I do watch other F1 content including the FFS Podcast. There was an episode in June when Eddie was telling David what a good job Lawrence had done with the team he'd started back in 1991, and I just knew where Adrian was headed. Posted my suspicion in the comments of quite a few 'Where's Newey going?" videos, too, so I'm feeling a bit smug, tbh. I'd be interested to see how Lance could do in a front-running car. I've no objection to him being the boss's son, but his lack of media training makes him very unpopular. If AM want to be winning titles, though, the other driver needs to be someone really good like Verstappen or Piastri. Alonso was good, but not as good as Hamilton, and his peak came before that comparison was ever made.
I have zero interest how Stroll could do in the absolute best car. There is nothing redeeming or interesting about him as a driver or person, at all… even if he managed to wring a WDC

the fact so many kept saying he goes to Ferrari to work with Hamilton, well i can see why Newey never goes to Ferrari, its the goddamn politics plus constant pressure from the media
Hi Aidan, I do enjoy your style and the way you put your stuff together, even if I don’t always agree with you. I don’t get the Alonso thing. Why does everyone think he’s so good? Sure he’s not Andrea de Cesaris or Bertrand Gachot but he isn’t Michael Schumacher either. I deeply respect Adrian Newey. If he thinks Alonso is good he’s probably better than I give him credit for. But I really feel there’s a lot of good if all the stars align, but if they don’t, as Martin Brundle (I think) said, he throws his toys out of the pram then goes off and sulks. I’ve never felt he could help develop a car or he’d have more championships. And Newey isn’t god. If the things around him aren’t right it will end like it did at McLaren.
It's not wise for anyone to believe that other teams have no chance of consistantly beating a newey designed F1 car. Newey may be considered the best at what he does, but that doesn't mean someone else can't rise to become as successful for another team.
I think Ferrari wanted someone more hands on whereas Newey just wants to be a consultant and idea man. So its a lot of money for a consultant when they just spent even more on a driver. Also everyone completely ignores Leclerc in thesr scenarios, yknow, the ferrari ferrari man who is leading the team atm and would also do great things in a newey car.
Alonso is over the hill and Stroll isn't a WDC tier driver. Whilst having Newey on the team is basically a cheat code and the other people onboarding to Aston for 2025 all have their own impressive careers, I think the limiting factor for the team ALREADY is the drivers and bringing in a godtier team to back them will only exacerbate that discrepancy.
Ya gotta feel sorry for Lance. The poor guy is in a damned if you do damned if you don’t situation. It appears that he’s getting better, slowly, but still. So if he starts out performing Alonso next year, it’s because of neither “daddy’s money told Alonso to let him by or Alonso is too old and needs to retire”. If he were to somehow start fighting for podiums next year, then it’s only because of Newey, even if it starts at the first race. He’s just not going to be able to catch a break anywhere.
I wouldn't mind seeing Lance being moved to Hypercar, but I don't see that happening anytime soon. I will admit that he's made some progress since joining F1 but I still think he's blocking potentially better drivers from having a go. Alonso is getting old and will eventually retire, again, so Laurence must start looking for drivers who can get the job done. All that said, Newey and Alonso is a dream match for a lot of fans and I'm kind of here for it.
Sarcasm located below. You can't rain on my optimism! Alonso is the new champion! The car will be winning instantly! Magic Newey God Car! Seriously though, I hope Fernando keeps the flame burning, didn't direct it at the team, and I get to see him in a race winning car.
Why wont stroll snr, push to the limits of these regs.. with Dan before handover 26 regs to Adrian. The days of seasonally timed development progression, is lost to 'spec' development strategy.
As to the brand, is Aston really about the Valkery? I mean, think Bond. Think castles. I never thought of Aston as being on the forefront of outright hypercars without building their own engines. I may be an old geezer with distorted and outdated worldviews here.
I was hoping to see the news that Lance Stroll would step back, enjoy his life elsewhere and give his seat to Felipe Drugovich, a real talent that will not have his chance because Lance insists to play and crash with his father's toy.

They have excellent engineering talent, trying to get to grips with its new equipment and factory. The "decline" coincided with the transition to the new factory, so I'm sure they'll acclimatise and start improving. Newey, being the genius he is, might actually help speed that up.
I do think Audi needs to learn from Toyota's driver line up. Bottas and Hulkenberg is a very Toyota feeling line up.
Like Merc though it's probably still going to take a few years for them to get up to speed.

Newey Louis and the News? Good, solid 80s pop choice. I'm partial to their song Cruisin'.
Lol you're kidding yourselves if you think Stroll is firing his own son. He's the one who'll be world champion if this pans out
Don't forget what Ferrari did to John Barnard, when he was working out of England.
This is exactly why i dont think Hamilton, like Vetal will last very long, They arnt Italian.

i hope this one is real. fernando deserves at least a shot at another world championship.
But then again this is Lawrence Stroll we’re talking about looks like Lance till 2030 it is 😂
Great insight into the effect of personal relationship and working environment. Love it!
Eddie Jordan is back at Jordan.. sort of…
Oh man, yep that's kind of nuts!
Cheers from the Pacific West Coast of Coast of Canada.
I'm sure RPM can fill in a few gaps on Lance.
His rants about ''The Windowlicker'' are legendary
I love the rumor videos. Not that I enjoy the rumors, but it gives Aiden more opportunities for his spot on deadpan English Humor. I spent a few years in the UK and I really miss the dry understated remark with just a hint of a smile that the Brits long ago perfected. Us yanks just lack the wry subtlety of the Brits. It's not all Python and Benny Hill ya know.

Mate I had to spit out my tea with that huey lewis one, quite punny 😂
I'm interested to see if his involvement will be not just f1 but the hypercar as well, as I don't follow f1 anymore but have a keen interest in WEC and IMSA.
Going to be interesting , i am somewhat disapointed that Newy is not going to Ferrari but it is what it is. i agree that Aston are going to need to look a their drivers for the futuree as well as other things for this to work out
Newey raced at Goodwood this past weekend.
Lots of talk about Newey, not much on the impending 50 / 50 PU regs which newey won't be able to influence as he is an aerodynamics engineer
(Reportedly those facilities not only operated the power units, but manufactured parts of the electrical systems which Honda does not have the ability to manufacture elsewhere.)
So while it's possible that Honda might still be competitive in 2026, the odds are heavily stacked against them (and neither Honda nor Stroll can throw additional money at the problems). As we saw when the current power unit regulations were introduced for 2014, it took a long time for the other manufacturers to catch up with Mercedes (who had made an early start with their R&D), and that was without a PU development budget cap.
I like it when Aidan mentions things
I'm concerned about the Aston Martin hypercar not having a hybrid system. But, we'll see soon enough.
Newey and Honda should be a great partnership, I'd guess Max in for 2026.
Fantastic new Factory, state of the art SIM and wind tunnel, plus he's getting shares in the company, all toooo good for him to say no.
2026 is going to be all about power units.
newey lewis and the news is the BRILLIANT.
We knew he was leaving a lot longer back before 2024
made sense once it felt like Newey would not want to live near Ferrari, shame as would have liked a Red Newey machine🏎
Great shit
There will be a lot of work done to get rid of dead wood. I don't expect serious progress for a couple of years
Great News .....
Didn't Newey say that he would love to build a car for drivers like Hamilton and Alonso?
Endless talk about team orders at McLaren, or the lack thereof. Pretty sure Zac is making sure Piastri doesn't get stolen, but I can't help thinking Aston Honda would be pretty tempting if McLaren were to breech some clause in his contract
News confirmed. Reportedly Newey has also received a stake in the team and is now a shareholder, as part of the deal. I expect that part was important to him, something he wanted back at Williams. (And couldn't get at McLaren or Red Bull.)
I wonder if Dorilton were prepared to offer him a stake at Williams? Seems likely they weren't, which may have tipped the balance more than that enormous 30m salary Stroll's giving him.
Likewise it would be interesting to know how much Ferrari offered him. They reportedly offered him a 100m contract over a decade ago (but we don't know over how many years that would have been spread).
LANDO! McLaren seem confused by Piastri and his hot lap skill. It's time to have a think...
Fking love your into every time man
Newey going to Aston can only mean they are bending over backwards for him.
Statute of limitations ran out in about 2006 or something and he’d been to the Italian Grand Prix with McLaren.

Jeez.....imagine Stroll as WDC......
I dunno, the opportunity for (statistically) the best designer ever to work with (statistcially) the best team ever and (statistically) the best driver ever just seemed too delicious to pass up. I really, really wish Ferrari had been prepared to get the chequebook out and hash something out with him.
Should of gone to ferrari and become an Immortal
Can you imagine a newey designed ferrari road car?

I love Fernando but I fear this has come all too late for him. 45 is an insane age for F1.
Of course, Alonso is only currently compared with Baby Stroll. We dont know really how quick he still is.
Max will be using a Honda works power unit in 2026 attached to a Newey designed car.
I think Ferrari just realised the RB car wasn’t winning due to its design and backed off from pressing the gamble button
Alonso 20 years ago was a monster. Alonso now is not.
It's not wise for anyone to believe that other teams have no chance of consistantly beating a newey designed F1 car. Newey may be considered the best at what he does, but that doesn't mean someone else can't rise to become as successful for another team.
Lance is a rich man's Sergio Perez. Okay, but not going to win you races.
You are exactly correct about Fernando. He is way past peak Alonso.
It's going to be fascinating to see how Aston manages to screw this up even with a total A-team of technical specialists.
Give it up Fernando, not gonna another race let alone a title.

Hmmm Lance to hypercar and Lando to AM
Ya gotta feel sorry for Lance. The poor guy is in a damned if you do damned if you don’t situation. It appears that he’s getting better, slowly, but still. So if he starts out performing Alonso next year, it’s because of neither “daddy’s money told Alonso to let him by or Alonso is too old and needs to retire”. If he were to somehow start fighting for podiums next year, then it’s only because of Newey, even if it starts at the first race. He’s just not going to be able to catch a break anywhere.
It’s my opinion that Sainz has gone to Williams to wait to replace Alonso at Aston.
This was the world's worst kept secret in which Newey will give baby Stroll a championship on a platinum platter. Egad!
Id keep alonso for his experience.then go for a young star.or piastri
I think Lance will do well. He's as de-motivated as Fernando. Neither of them are pushing that hard.
Newy brings his asymmetrical braking tricks along.

I may be an old geezer with distorted and outdated worldviews here.
aidan,do you think red bull will be able to convince ross brawn to come out of retirement to take over adrian newey's place?
I was hoping to see the news that Lance Stroll would step back, enjoy his life elsewhere and give his seat to Felipe Drugovich, a real talent that will not have his chance because Lance insists to play and crash with his father's toy.
