I enjoyed it. Three things that stood out: Russel Crow's acting, the focus on suspense instead of jumpscares, and the lore with the spanish inquisition.
I’m so glad The Exorcist 3 is finally getting love. I saw it alone in a theater in rural Alabama while visiting my grandparents. I was THE only person in the theater…it was the single best horror movie experience of my life.
What I liked most was the lore they set up with the Spanish Inquisition and once of the former exorcists. It gave me a real DaVinci Code vibe. I wish there had been more of it.
In an interview about playing Zeus ,Russell Crowe told how he had asked what would be the accent ,trying to hold out for English with a Greek accent. Management said just the usual Mid American would be fine . Crowe insisted and the compromise was that he should do every one of his scenes twice ,one in each accent ,they would trial it and end up with the one audiences preferred. Greek it was ,but Crowe did twice the work for the same salary!

I saw it yesterday and thought it was pretty good. Enjoyed it with a early show with one other person in the theater room. Once the movie was over we actually hung around for about 10 minute just talking about it. Far better than I thought it would be and wouldn't mind a sequel or a limited streaming series which is what the other person in the theater agreed with.
Why does nobody ever talk about The Rite? It's such an underrated movie! Critics didn't like it cause "it wasn't scary". It's like people need jump scares to feel anything anymore. The Rite has such rich & wonderful atmosphere, as well as fantastic acting, by a star cast. The Rite deserves to be mentioned alongside The Exorcist, The Exorcist 3, & The Exorcism of Emily Rose.
The Rite is my favorite exorcist movie, next to The Exorcism of Emily Rose. It’s a classic, with a very nice atmosphere. It’s by no means underrated though.

Can I ask a question? Are jump scares not wanted or good anymore? Not being mean or weird just trying to understand. I have seen this sentiment a few times before about jump scares being a bad thing? Is it because people think they are cheap? Any explanation would be greatly appreciated, thanks for your time!
@@Sooch900 you pretty much answered the question with your question. At this point jump scares have been so popularized and drawn out, that they have become predictable and as you said cheap. Don’t get me me wrong when done right, they can be effective but when you are a dedicated horror fan that watches high numbers of horror films you can perfectly point out when it’s going to happen before it happens which induces an eye roll. Lol At least that’s my take on it. others could view it completely differently. That’s the beauty of art.
@@Sooch900 Much like fart jokes and such are considered some of the lowest bar form of comedy, jump scares is the lowest bar form of horror. It's "easy" to fill your movie with jump scares constantly and call the movie a horror movie. But in reality it's just somebody you don't know is there tapping you on the shoulder and yelling "boo" in your ear all movie. Jump scares are not taboo to use, but they are constantly overused. True horror should be rounded out with things like providing a consistent atmosphere, pacing, sometimes existential horror where the situation makes the viewer anxious for the situation or characters and even good old fashion blood/gore can be used effectively (that is another thing that can be overdone as much as jump scare). So it's very easy to write a movie full of jump scares and call your movie "horror". It's not very easy to write a movie where the sense of absolute horror, loss, tension anxiety is palpable during the viewing experience due to what the characters see, can't see, feel etc. and how it's conveyed on screen. I'm sure somebody else can explain it better and probably add more details, but this is my view on what separates jump scare cheapness from actual horror.
The movie was outstanding and Russell Crowe needed a bounce back movie badly. Best exorcist movie I've seen in a long time and even the CGI was great. I've always been a fan of his acting that's why there's no surprise this movie was solid. How about the acting of Daniel Zovatto who played Father Esquivel. He was solid, and he really held his own alongside one of the all time great actors ever. Also, the other supporting cast were great too.

Saw it at a press screening last week here in Sweden. And I sort of agree with you. About 70% is the same old thing we have seen before. Deliver Us From Evil, The Eric Bana, Sean Harris & Edgar Ramirez movie is somewhat of a standout "exorcism" film with a fairly impressive final showdown sequence. Also, someone please put a stop to David Gordon Green.
This film is above average of the standard exorcist film. And I completely agree that it is way more entertaining than expected. However, I have to disagree with the acting of Alex Essoe. For me it was extremely jarring how sedated her character was, especially in contrast with the actor who plays her daughter. At times it almost felt that the roles were reversed, or that maybe the mother needed to take some Magnesium pills. I didn’t expect her to be chewing the scenery or yelling all the time, but the energy, tone of voice and overall emotion that you would expect for that role, the mother fell flat and underwhelming. I also really look forward to a sequel. After Top Gun Maverick, I welcome more films that are about having fun instead of drawn out ultra depressing stories.
Saw this yesterday and enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would. I told my fiancé before the movie, “I think this movie is gonna be terrible” and I was pleasantly surprised when I came out of it. Comedic relief was effective and Crowe did a great job. You’re right in saying that he saved this movie.
Thanks for the review. I have a question, does anybody know any details about the Shelby Oaks film, like trailers or release date? I'm surprised Stuckman isn't posting updates.
Agree with Chris, i saw this one in a pre-screening, Russell make the movie better, is a fun movie and I hope they do a sequel looking for the other demons
Ok so I was SO EXCITED for this movie, that I actually went to the theater by myself early today to see it… I love Russell Crowe & I love Exorcism type movies… I was HIGHLY DISSAPOONTED! I did not find the story/plot line to be engaging, the demon character that was inside the boy I found to be very cheesy & almost like a spoof version of the girl from the original exorcist. I was hoping this movie would be on the level of “The Rite” with Anthony Hopkins because that movie was really good & this seemed like it would be similar. Pretty sad cause I wanted to love this but didn’t
Chris I think it would be a great idea to watch and review smaller films like “Bunker” and “How to Blow up a Pipeline”. They are made by newer directors like yourself and it would help them tremendously
Another thing, the emphasis on the the clergy and then the Spanish Inquisition gave it some nice depth and context that other films with priests don’t bother with
I originally thought they were going to make a sequel once I got closer to the end, but after it said that he died in 2016 (Gabrielle, the Priest), I think that seals the deal that this is just going to be a standalone film, unless there's a spin off series about his right-hand priest, which could be interesting.
Well done Master Chris Stuckmann‼️ Back over 2 million!! I am both happy and proud of you!! Much L♥️VE to you, you lovely wife Sam, and the mini Stuckmanns‼️‼️ While I have not read this book, I do know, Father Gary Thomas, who is the subject of the book, that was the basis for the film, “The Rite”. In the film he is played by Sir Anthony Hopkins. I actually know him very well. When he was working on the book with the author, more so when he got back from Budapest, I asked if he thought that was weird. He said you could never be too careful. Five being a man of faith, Catholic Christian, faith, I believe him. I have seen some disturbing things. And from his tales, not that he’s all that talking about them; he’s a very honest guy. He is also a great human being. Again, I’m glad to see you doing in your career; that wind is catching your sails and is taking of behind the camera, as a screenwriter, and in life‼️ You are surely fire‼️🫶🏻♨️♨️♨️✊🏼
Was hoping for something on par with Emily Rose... Something that makes that film stand out so much is the back and forth between scientific explanation and the supernatural... Very intriguing for an ex joho like myself
The most frightening part about the exorcism movies is that there’s already a the original “The Exorcist” remake in the process and it’s filled with inclusive characters, to say it softly … and we all let this happen
I was hoping for a twist. The Pope to have black eyes in the end because he too was possessed and all the Vatican soon impacted. It was a fun watch but pretty generic
Yeah I agree Chris not since "The Exorcism of Emily Rose" has there been any really good exorcism movies but when I heard Russell was involved in this it took it up a notch imo so I have hopes for it. And with it being his first Horror movie I'm excited.
Just watched it last night; I had fun watching it and Russell Crowe was awesome! My only gripe is that some of the possession scenes with the kid came off as funny instead of scary, but that could be my jaded sensibilities talking.
I love Alex Essoe and she's the main reason I'll be watching this movie. I'm not expecting great things of the movie as a whole, but also I've not seen many exorcism movies aside from the classics so perhaps I'll be more forgiving of the cliches than others might be.
This is a watchable film, but its doesn't push the boundary of the exorcism genre in any way, everything in this film you've seen before, but it is shot really well, and Russell crows acting is good, but overall I think this would have been better if it had an adult rating, allowing the director to show us things beyond the usual exorcism tropes.
When he got his own film in production/announced in trades. I get why, you don’t wanna trash people if your own product could suck, but the “only positive” reviews have made him more forgiving of crap.
I was really positively surprised to see a movie review from you. I didn't enjoy the movie but I knew you would have some fresh perspective. Still, I found this movie to be having some troubling tendencies, especially concerning mental health. A person with psychosis is easily healed by a placebo when in reality they probably would have relapsed after a short while. As someone who places high value in the difficult and well earned education of psychotherapists I always find it kind of condescending when movies make if look like you just have to be a very kindhearted person to fix someone else's mental problems. I also could not shake the feeling that this movie actively avoided the topic of sexual abuse of little boys and replaced it with a story about an abused woman (which according to the church is still the only acceptable gender for the desires of a man). I may read into that last part a little too much and would be happy to hear another perspective on this. I must also criticize (and even if it is a little detail, it still seems sloppy and makes me question the amount of thought or attention to detail put into this movie) the continuity error of Father Esquibels ear. The scene of Henry biting a piece out if it seemed so weirdly specific that it stayed with me till the end of the movie where Esquibels ear seemed to be perfectly fine, not even a bandage or anything. As if the movie just wanted a shocking scene, but did not in fact want pretty Father Esquibel to look ugly for the oh so obviously teased prequels.
Me upon watching the trailer: "Ugh" 🙄 My husband: "I wanna see that." Thank you for giving me something to look forward to with this movie. That trailer doesn't do it any favors. Maybe I'll play exorcism movie bingo...
Completely agree with this review. The film was completely formulaic and predictable, but Crowe was really good. He managed to be charming and avuncular in a way that I wouldn't have thought he could manage. He made the movie watchable.

Loving the fact Russell Crowe was a reason you admired the film... such a great actor😊.
1:40 I’m so happy u mentioned overlord that’s probably top 5 underrated horror movies in the last 10 years. I love that movie
Me too! Hugely underrated film.
I agree with Chris! In no means a game changer, but Crowe, and his character Father Amorth, were both pleasant and entertaining to watch.
Chris I love that you stop giving movies a grade so Noone can say you're persuading your audience and for that your opinion matters more 💯
He does save the movie. Crowe has an undeniable screen presence. He'll take roles that could easily be disasters and act the shit out of them.
Don't feel crazy that people thought it was good, apparently the world and popular culture are in a tailspin.
Chris I think it would be a great idea to watch and review smaller films like “Bunker” and “How to Blow up a Pipeline”. They are made by newer directors like yourself and it would help them tremendously
Does anyone know when Chris' Shelby Oaks is releasing?
Chris can you do a review on Prey for the Devil. It came out 2023. I thought it was solid. I would like to hear your opinion. Thanks
We appreciate your film reviews always. God bless you and everyone here.
Exorcism of Emily Rose was by far thee best and all time scariest ‘Demon,’ movie I’ve ever seen.
The Exorcist for me.. The Exorcist iii as well
Another thing, the emphasis on the the clergy and then the Spanish Inquisition gave it some nice depth and context that other films with priests don’t bother with
Love u Chris! Thank you for all the amazing reviews over the years🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽
Good to see you again Chris 🤘
Chris: I didn’t think this was the greatest movie ever.
Us: Um Chris thank you for stating the obvious fact about yourself 🤣
I originally thought they were going to make a sequel once I got closer to the end, but after it said that he died in 2016 (Gabrielle, the Priest), I think that seals the deal that this is just going to be a standalone film, unless there's a spin off series about his right-hand priest, which could be interesting.
I knew from his face in the thumbnail how this was gonna go 😂
Well done Master Chris Stuckmann‼️ Back over 2 million!! I am both happy and proud of you!!
Much L♥️VE to you, you lovely wife Sam, and the mini Stuckmanns‼️‼️
While I have not read this book, I do know, Father Gary Thomas, who is the subject of the book, that was the basis for the film, “The Rite”.
Russel Crow is awesome in everything hes in.
really hope Crowe gets back into some big movies.
Gladiator II, Maximus Resurrected?
@@FrankinDallas That has all the makings of a real shitshow. It could be so bad it spoils the original epic.
He had his time.... it's over.
@@greggibson33hes 59 and has a net worth of 120 million at that point I would be just having fun too in the twilight years of my life.
i heard about Father Amorth via the old JonTron video, i am excited to see R.Crowe in the role.
You should read the books. The books are good.
Chris grew up with exorcism
@chrisstuckman not a horror movie but any thought of doing a review of Speed Racer? I have a different perspective on it today, curious if would too
Having witnessed a real exorcism....I think I'll pass on this one. The memories give me all the chill I need 😂
Well exorcisms aren't real so....
@@theabraham8164 Oh boy, Lord forgive him, he does not know what he speaks....
@@metallicak5 - Well, the "Lord" isn't real, either, so...
I could not take my eye's off this movie. Russell Crowe DID that!!
Honestly, that demonic voice was so bad edited. 🤣
Like from Scary Movie,parody.
Could you please review "Nefarious"?
I'm practicing Catholic who has read about Fr. Amorth.. I'm very curious to see how this story will be executed.
Poorly. It's fan fiction at best. Crowe is good though.
I saw the movie. you are correct the store will be executed.
I missed this kind of reviews. Just being honest. Good work!
Just watched it last night; I had fun watching it and Russell Crowe was awesome! My only gripe is that some of the possession scenes with the kid came off as funny instead of scary, but that could be my jaded sensibilities talking.
Speaking of demon movies, will you be reviewing Nefarious?
I can't say I'm thrilled to watch this. I'll wait for a HD version to pop up.
I just got back from seeing it. Crowe was outstanding and carried the film to be sure. But overall? I liked it. Good film. Recommended.
being that it's based on Fr. Amorth, which Pope is portrayed in the film? Franco Nero is simply credited as 'The Pope' on IMDB... JP2? Paul VI?
Spot on like always, you always make me hate my reviews though lol you say all the things I meant to and forgot and in a more well spoken way 😂
I love Alex Essoe and she's the main reason I'll be watching this movie. I'm not expecting great things of the movie as a whole, but also I've not seen many exorcism movies aside from the classics so perhaps I'll be more forgiving of the cliches than others might be.
Hey Chris, please review Nefarious. Thanks!
I enjoy his new movie reviews because I know that whenever I see a review, it's because Chris has somthing interesting to say about the movie.
Please let us get a new hilariosity I've been waiting patiently
I would watch anything with Russell, simply adore the guy :) Thanks for the review, was happy to make it in the release week
The exorcism of Emily Rose was pretty darn good!!!
@Andi Wijaya NO it wasn't!!! Stop lying!!!
@Andi Wijaya So have I, stop flattering yourself!!!
Please watch Nefarious starring Sean Patrick Flannery!
When did Chris stop doing grades at the end of the reviews?
When he got his own film in production/announced in trades. I get why, you don’t wanna trash people if your own product could suck, but the “only positive” reviews have made him more forgiving of crap.
Is your twitter hacked, or are you actually selling those Macbooks?
The Rite was good! But nothings better than the original Exorcists and Exorcist 3 is amazing
Me upon watching the trailer: "Ugh" 🙄
My husband: "I wanna see that."
Thank you for giving me something to look forward to with this movie.
I really liked this movie. Specifically, I really liked Russell Crowes accent
