I believe Angelina was invited as a "Deserving Debutante". While most of the young ladies invited to the ball are from rich and influential families, they reserve a few spot for young women who have excelled in certain fields. That, along with her lengthy work for Charites, probably brought her to their attention.
Exactly what happened a previous year , when a taxi drivers daughter was invited , she has a iQ higher the Albert einstein .
I agree. I understand that the ball has a charitable purpose and that many who are invited have been involved with various charities. That would fit Angelina perfectly.
Some of them were invited because of their own achievement.
Angelina is indeed a star! And her ball gown was one of the most beautiful and distinctive. Fashion is her hobby, she says, and she's made for such luxurious gowns. I hope she gets to model more high fashion clothes.

I think it worth adding that the gowns and the jewelry are lent to the participants for the occasion by design houses who pay for the honor of being on display and that the proceeds from the evening are donated to charities. This year World Central Kitchen and a french children's hospital were the recipients. WCK locates kitchens at disaster and war torn sites around the world when there is a need to provide good meals for families and children. Had this not been the rational AJ may not have accepted the invitation.

A Debutante Ball is more than about just a coming out of age. It's an introduction to those families with sons. To make possible family connections through a possible marriage. Only the very elite can afford to attend. As you said, by invitation only. To dress the young ladies for such an event is pricey. But make no mistake there is more at play than just a party & the parents make sure the right matches are made. It can be quite mercenary, especially to keep the right social & financial status. I'm sure in this day & age, some of those rules have been bent a little, but the underlying is still the same.
The ball also supports charities and a previous year a taxi drivers daughter was invited ; she has a iQ higher the Albert einstein .so it does have some good points .not 100% mercenary .
The very elite? Steve Harvey's daughter has attended - hardly what I'd call elite.
The “matchmaker” aspect of debutant balls are from previous centuries and were held almost exclusively for and by royalty and old money millionaires.
Today debutant balls are more of a holdover to a former era and today’s balls attract well-heeled influencers and it allows them (and their families) to “network” for social and financial reasons.

@@dojoswitzer Hardly. Part of my family history were at one time part of, what is considered, "Elite". Mind you, eventually generations down more the poorer side & long forgotten. What hung around was a level of the do's & don'ts of the etiquette book. That tweek of snobbery from my Grandmother. I didn't need to scrounge for the information. Hell, I can still set a formal dinner setting; know what spoons, forks & knives go on which side of a dinner plate & what order to use them in for what entre. Useless anymore. But if I were thrown in such a situation I could still conduct myself with the appropriate decorum. That attitude still lasted into the fifties. Change came slow.
Nobody needs to get self righteous, or their virtue signaling in a BUNCH!!! Anything that gives Angie more exposure is POSITIVE!!!
One of the other things that might have influenced the the invitors was that as being a National Treasure of Norway she is essentially a part of Norwegian aristocracy.
