Hi Hannah I purchased a really pretty baby blanket pattern some years ago with instructions for yfwd, yrn and yon… Oh my Daze project abandoned and never went back to it, but recently had urges to purchase pattern again and was mortified to see I still didn’t understand yrn… so I thought let’s find what Hannah knows… thank you so much and please may I say you have the most amazing teaching voice…calm collected and never makes me switch off. Thank you Hannah
I was looking for wl.fwd definition in a vintage pattern, but it turns out it's the same thing. Thanks for this clear instruction and I was able to figure out how to make it work for the way I hold my needles thanks to your yrn instruction. Thanks so much!
Thanks, this is a great demo! I was frustratingly stuck on a particular bit of the jumper I'm making because they hadn't specified how to do this in pearl. Problem solved, great teaching video, thanks! 😁
Hi Lotte! You’re welcome 😊 There are a few videos here where I dive into how I'm holding my needles. This one show specifically - it's the English Traditional style, sometimes called the America Fast method: ua-cam.com/video/bOyzsHp3Quc/v-deo.html Happy knitting! 🧶
That is a bit odd, I'd ask the designer or publisher if you can get in touch. The pattern may have printed or digital alterations ready to replace what you have. happy knitting!
You’ll need to loop all the way round around the needle, just like you would for a stitch, but without placing the needle through the stitch first. To the front as you would before purling, over to the back and under to the front again. Happy knitting 🧶
Thanks for the feedback, do feel free to change the settings of the video, so it plays at a slower speed, and of course pause and replay however much you need to. Happy knitting 🧶
Is Yarn forward the same as Yarn over? I see both terms in the same knitting pattern for babies booties and I am confused a little. Plus if I do the yarn forward , do most patterns take it for granted that you will decrease ( K2 together) ? I have spare time on my hands and have lost the pattern I used for knitting booties that I used to take up to the Women's Hospital for the Neo Nates- Prems.
Hi Andrew, yes they can be used to do the same thing but you'll also need them to do different things too! (nice and confusing I know!) For example Slip WYIF only needs the first YFWD movement and doesn't complete the YO. Most patterns won't presume you know to decrease, they'll always write it in the instructions. The compensation might be on later rows or not happen at all - see the yarn over video for more on this: ua-cam.com/video/CJwjs0RvJ-E/v-deo.html Happy knitting!
Hi I have encountered something that doesn't not make sense. "1st and alt rows: (WS)knit." Can you please explain that I know it means wrong side, but is it another way of asking me to start with a perl row?
This may be because you’re knitting in garter stitch - every row knitted. Lots of baby booties are knitted like that, makes them thicker and gives more structure.
This will very likely mean that you did the yfwd after a knit stitch and need to be ready for a purl stitch next, so make sure the yarn is at the front of your knitting as you continue with the pattern. Happy knitting! 🧶
Will younplease help me with this instruction?:K2,BO1,*k in front/ thevbacb the front/ the back and the back again pull the first 4bloops from this group over the 5 loop k1 tbl ,BO1 ,rep from * I just can't get it around my head This pattern is suppose to called a String of Pearl.I'm totally gutted. thanks Hannah
It's then saying that you need to pull stitches over other stitches... so check this video to see how that's done.... ua-cam.com/video/eRQwAKxWkoM/v-deo.html
I understand the pull over what I'm confused it the BO after the BO do I use the BO stitch ti knit front /back and so on or a different stitches all together..What does it mean the first 4bloops from the the 5 loop . I learn knitting by looking and reading is a real challenge for me. Cheers
@W Cashmere It's really difficult for me to help without seeing the full pattern. If you want to join my membership or come on a knitting one-to-one session with me I can help more. Look at the options on my website: knitwithhannah.co.uk
I can't open up your website for registering for on one Safari said can't open. Thanks I just keep on trying one way or the other I'll get it some how ,
Yarn Forward Round Needle. It might mean to wrap it a second time around the needle. Check with the abbreviation list for the pattern. It might also be a mistaken writing of yfwd. Happy knitting 🧶
I’ve done a flip-through of a Harry Potter knitting book in this video, which includes a Weasley jumper: ua-cam.com/video/8Qk4dDS79o4/v-deo.html Certainly worth a look, I really like it. Happy knitting 🧶
Yes, you'll find yfwd, yo, yrn are all very similar, with slight differences if you're using them in different situations - but basically they all make holes or move the yarn around the needle for one reason or another!
That sounds like an odd instruction, it’s impossible as there’s not a stitch to knit before the next stitch. Double-check you’ve the right number of stitches in your needle, but otherwise it might be a mistake in the pattern. Happy knitting 🧶
The Y is 'Yarn'. If it says lyfwd. , it's probably 'left yarn forward', which is going to be very similar to what is demonstrated above. (I'd go with that until you have a better handle on the rest of the instructions, when you can look more deeply into the different nuances of yfwd.
Sorry this doesn't seem to have worked for you- I've asked some other viewers and the sound has been fine with them. Hope you can find some other useful content in the rest of my channel, Happy Knitting! Hannah
Hi Lyn, You'll find knit stitch and purl stitch tutorials elsewhere on the channel, this just shows moving the yarn forward. As long as you're knitting and purling already, the yarn forward will be easy to slip into your knitting techniques. See the yfwd part starting here: 1:06
Hi Nancy, sorry this video wasn't slow enough for you - if you click on the setting button, that's shaped like a cog, you can pick a different speed. My voice might sound a bit weird but you'll see the video more slowly. And anything else I did in the video, like the knit stitch, k2tog or purl stitch can be seen more slowly in my other videos in the jargon playlist: ua-cam.com/play/PLnqw36aiAI0gU7FIK5VHQJH8mZhrrvhBR.html and beginners playlist: ua-cam.com/play/PLnqw36aiAI0jrYkn9Nmr2_wctJ8_TDnge.html happy knitting!

hi Jane, so glad this video was helpful! Yes, the abbreviations can really mess up a knitting rhythm if you're not careful. Happy knitting 🧶

Im mainly just fascinated by the way you're holding the needles haha but thanks for the great explanation!

Think I might have to pull it down and get a new pattern it says to do this else where in pattern
That is a bit odd, I'd ask the designer or publisher if you can get in touch. The pattern may have printed or digital alterations ready to replace what you have. happy knitting!
Thanks Hannah, just what I needed to watch and nicely explained 😊
Glad it was helpful! Happy knitting 🧶
Thank you for such a clear explanation video! Subscribed :)
Thanks Alexandra, and welcome! 🧶
What if the yarn is in the back and then yrn to purl stitch next?
You’ll need to loop all the way round around the needle, just like you would for a stitch, but without placing the needle through the stitch first. To the front as you would before purling, over to the back and under to the front again.

Thank you for clarifying this, but can I just add, when you’re demonstrating a stitch, if you could do it a little more slowly. Thank you
Thanks for the feedback, do feel free to change the settings of the video, so it plays at a slower speed, and of course pause and replay however much you need to.

Do you know how to do wfd in knitting could you do a video about it
Hi Tracy, this is another term for yfwd, meaning ‘Wool forward’. So this video will help you.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!!! Finally got this right!!!!!
