    Lakota Prayer
    (Background music: Carlos Nakai)
    Four Directions
Creator, it is I. Thank you for today’s sunrise, for the breath and life within me, and for all of your creations. Creator, hear my prayer, and honor my prayer.
As the day begins with the rising sun, I ask, Spirit keeper of the East, Brother Eagle, Be with me. Fly high as you carry my prayers to the Creator. May I have eyes as sharp as yours, so I am able to see truth and hope on the path I have chosen. Guide my step and give me courage to walk the circle of my life with honesty and dignity.
Spirit keeper of the South, Wolf, Be with me. Help me to remember to love and feel compassion for all mankind. Help me to walk my path with joy and love for myself, for others, for the four legged, the winged ones, the plants and all creation upon Mother Earth. Show me it is right for me to make decisions with my heart, even if at times, my heart becomes hurt. Help me to grow and nurture my self worth in all ways.
Spirit Keeper of the West, Brown Bear, Be with me. Bring healing to the people I love and to myself. Bring into balance the physical, mental and spiritual, so I am able to know my place on this earth, in life and in death. Heal my body, heal my mind and bring light, joy and awareness to my spirit.
Spirit Keeper of the North, White Buffalo, Be with me. As each day passes, help me to surrender, with grace, the things of my youth. Help me to listen to the quiet, and find serenity and comfort in the silences as they become longer. Give me wisdom so I am able to make wise choices in all things which are put in front of me, And when time for my change of worlds has come, Let me go peacefully, without regrets, for the things I neglected to do as I walked along my path.
Mother Earth, Thank you for your beauty, And for all you have given me. Remind me never to take from you more then I need, and remind me to always give back more than I take.
    - Vera Dery

I may only be 1/16th Lakota. But I grew up only 30 minutes from Pine Ridge. My father helped build the hospital up there. SuAnne Big Crow center. And was an electrician at the high school. We were always welcomed into the culture up there. Welcomed in as family. I was never a religious person. But the Lakota philosophy and spirituality always made sense. Their connection to their ancestors and to the earth stuck with me. I spent alot of time fishing and hunting on the reservation. It felt different than anywhere else. I was always more aware and mindful of the moment. And the connection. I hope to one day do a photography project on the lakota people. Ive attended powwows when I was younger so I never got to fully experience the entirety of the event. I hope to be invited one day. To experience. Im trying to incorporate the lakota ways into my life as it has connected now more than ever. The culture is so beautiful. I wish words could explain the impact ive felt. Thank you earth for providing. I hope to give back in any way I can.

In New Mexico the Native four directions is shown on the state flag. But is the circle yellow gold like the background as the sun, or is it solid red like the sunset? Now it is yellow gold like the sun. Has it changed for NM as one not the other?
Please listen to the Roman Catholic Canonized by the Vatican St Francis of Assisi, the author of this Prayer: (and as I truly believe ecclesiastically approved by the Vatican and Catholic Bishops, this prayer), Prayer of "The Canticle of Creatures". Do you, as I, believe it is a beautiful prayer about the brothers and sisters of, and, Sir Brother Sun and Mother Earth. Beautiful prayer. Questions I may find on a documented documentary, maybe on FNX the First Nation Xperience, the Native American Network, television, internet. (And a yes to animated FNX TV Wapos Bay series!):
I have not been in the East, are there Eagles abundantly there? Are they mostly in Alaska? With a great large one or many in Southern America? (Documented Documentary reference).
I have been only once to the South, not knowing, are there many wolves there?
The brown bear, I have lived in the West, are there brown bears, they are not only grizzly bear now?
White buffalo in the North, are they there or are there more than one in the MidWest? White deer have been reported in the West, North, and East, if I remember, recently, are these white deer herds in the South too? Four Directions Prayer, beautiful prayer of truth. (News and Documented Documentaries as references).

i started to listen to it at the last two mornings and it really aligns me with the valuesi want to remember every day. i didnt understand the part " As each day passes, help me to surrender, with grace, the things of my youth. Help me to listen to the quiet, and find serenity and comfort in the silences as they become longer." i would love to understand what the meaning of surendering the things of youth and quitnes that becomes longer means so i can put the right intention. Thank you!

    • @jenniferrice3734
      @jenniferrice3734 4 роки тому +1

I feel compelled to respond to your questions. As we grow older, it necessary for us to let go of anything that no longer serves us on our journey through life. That can be many things. Maybe an old friend from your youth that you are no longer in alignment with spiritually and so you must let them go so that they do not hold you back. That is just an example. It could also be a behavior, environment, personal beliefs, etc. As for the quietness that gets longer, as we age we begin to prefer the quiet instead of all the noise and chaos we liked in our younger days. This becomes significantly more pronounced with age. It is necessary to have the silence because that is how you can hear God. You have to be silent and in quiet in order to hear the Spirit speak. This is also the basis for meditation and is included in many different religions, cultures and customs around the world. I hope that helps you. Be blessed always.

Yes as Jennifer Rice explained so eloquently, as we grow older we have different values and have to let go of some things we thought were important to us so that we can spend our last years in quiet. I am honoured that you appreciate my written prayer. Vera
