Decades ago I learned a knot at each corner of a flat sheet draped over the matrass would make a fitted sheet without sewing! Simply lay a sheet smoothly and evenly over your mattress tie a know close to each lower corner of the mattress. Done. You can also tie knots at the bottom corners of the flat upper sheet. I leave the knots in when laundering.
Could you add a photo of how you do this knot? I wanted a flat sheet with a fitted bottom so that it doesn't come untucked so easily - I found a company that offers a top sheet "fitted" at the bottom. However, all the did was put some elastic on the bottom but they did not make the pocket that wraps around the mattress! so, it still come untucked. And they didn't adjust the length of the sheet, so I have an extra 18" or so at the top that gets in the way. Thank you, this is a great idea and I think it would solve my problem.
Kathryn, you could use the instructions for making the pockets from this video and only sew the elastic across the bottom and up the sides about 12" to make the type of sheet you are describing. Happy Sewing!
Lady, thank you very much! I searched, found your video, got right to it and made a double fitted sheet in about an hour. I cannot thank you enough for clear measuring guidance and instructions.

Awesome! My brother just handed me two flat sheets he wants turned into fitted sheets for his motorhome bed. It's a custom size so it's not something he could by sheets for. Now I'm set.
Excellent instructions--verbally & visually. I've been sort of sewing since I was a pre-teen...but never learned what a "French seam" was before this. I am going to use that little technique on a bunch of things--home goods and clothing!! Thank you for taking the time to help me (us).
Thank you very much for your informative video. I had a sheet left unused. After watching the video and taking the necessary measurements, I sewed a new sheet, thereby saving on the purchase of a new sheet. Thank you very much for your work.
Very good instructional video. I found the French seam to be a great help. Would you tell me what the +5" for the initial measurements represents, as well as, the +3" for the corners? Thank you/
Hi Kim! I explain in more detail in the written instructions available here, www.needlepointers.com/main/youtubecontent.aspx?youtubepageid=619. The 5" is extra for wrapping around the bottom of the bed but also for the hem around the sheet. The 3" is for the french seam and for the extra around the edge. Happy Mending!
Great video with valuable tips. I'm a beginning sewer so there's a lot I need to learn. There is something I don't understand regarding the dimensions. If the flat cut size is 94"' x 72" and you remove 10" corners, that leaves a rectangle for on the top the mattress of (94-20) x (72-20), or 74" x 52", which is smaller than the dimensions of the mattress of 75" x 53". This will decrease further with the seam allowances for the French seam on the box corners. Should the rectangle for atop the mattress defined by the points at the upper ends of the French seams be smaller than the mattress dimensions like this? Is this by design to fit snugly around the rounded upper corners of the mattress? Is it in anticipation of the fabric having some stretch?? Please enlighten me.
Hi! My sheet did end up fitting snugly around the corners. If you want, just add 2 extra inches to the first calculations of length and width (add 7" instead of 5"). This is if your flat sheet is large enough. In my calculations there is extra for the sheet to wrap under the mattress a bit, so you could reduce the depth calculation by 1" so the corner cutouts could be 9" instead of 10". This could help if your sheet isn't large enough to add 2" to the first calculation. HTH. You can check out our written tutorial here: www.needlepointers.com/main/youtubecontent.aspx?youtubepageid=619 Happy sewing!
Hi there, Thank you for this video, it was very informative. My question to you is, what kind of rotary cutter are you using here? It seems to cut with ease through the layers of fabric. Thank you. 💞
Good tutorial on sewing elastic and for measuring the sheet to the bed. I prefer the elastic only on the corners, would that change the measurements at all?
Thanks for watching our tutorial! It would only change the measurements of the elastic itself. You could sew the elastic only in the corners, but you would need to finish the rest of the sides.
Do you make them for others if we paid this is to complicated for me to do plus I have no sewing machine I need this for one of my daughter bed sheets this would make her so happy as the sheet that came with her bedding set she wanted the flat one as her fitted sheet it shoes more of the squishmallows
Hi Jessica! Thank you for your interest in our video. We do not sew items for people, I would suggest seeing if someone local to you can alter the sheet. Alternatively, if you search on Amazon for "flat sheet holder" you will find there are quite a few options for types of straps. One of these may work to hold the flat sheet around the bed.
Hi Sandi! Thanks for your interest in our video and your question. We have the calculation and directions on this page, www.needlepointers.com/main/youtubecontent.aspx?youtubepageid=619. It should be able to help you figure out how to cut the corners. Happy Mending!

Hi, it's for the seam allowance when sewing the boxed corners and for it to wrap around the bottom of the mattress a bit. You can find more detailed instructions here: www.needlepointers.com/main/youtubecontent.aspx?youtubepageid=619. Happy Sewing!
Usually the folded edge is folded to the wrong side of the fabric. But, you can certainly pick either side to be the "right" side when you start the corners.
I was able to make a fitted sheet from the same sized flat sheet but if you have a thick mattress it may not fit. You can just take the measurements to see if it will work.
For my bed, I needed to unpick the seams to get the sheet large enough to fit. If you are using a larger sheet for a smaller sized bed, then certainly just cut off the seams! Happy Mending!
Hi! You sew a zig-zag stitch so that when the elastic is stretched the stitch line will not break. In this case, we are stretching the elastic (a lot) while sewing and there is no extra stretch in the fabric afterwards. So, the thread won't break. Thanks for watching and happy sewing!
Because you may need the extra material if you have a think mattress or use a mattress topper. How about you get a life instead of being rude about things you apparently know nothing about.
Thank you that's really clear. So helpful

Hi, thanks for watching! I have a Quilter's Select rotary cutter, but any rotary cutter with a sharp blade (ie, newish) will cut nicely like this!

Why add 3" to the corners? I am working on a fitted sheet and the thickness of my mattress is 6". Is the 3" for the underside of the mattress?
Hi, it's for the seam allowance when sewing the boxed corners and for it to wrap around the bottom of the mattress a bit. You can find more detailed instructions here: www.needlepointers.com/main/youtubecontent.aspx?youtubepageid=619. Happy Sewing!
my mattress height is 18" will these measurements work the same way?
Hi! Thanks for your question. Yes, it would work the same. Happy Sewing!
In the tutorial you talk about the right side and the wrong side. If it’s just a solid sheet I just pick a side when starting the first corner right?
Usually the folded edge is folded to the wrong side of the fabric. But, you can certainly pick either side to be the "right" side when you start the corners.
@@Needlepointers so if you were still using it as a flat sheet, is the right side the one that touches your body?
@@MaryCat123 The right side is the side that faces up. The side seams will be folded to the wrong side of the fabric.
Can you make a queen fitted sheet FROM a queen flat sheet ? Or in your experience it needs to be the next size up ?
I was able to make a fitted sheet from the same sized flat sheet but if you have a thick mattress it may not fit. You can just take the measurements to see if it will work.

Thanks

Thank you for watching our video on making a fitted sheet from a flat sheet. If you have flat sheets, transform them into fitted. Happy sewing.
Why would u waste ur time undoing the seems just to cut it. Get a life
Hi! Sometimes the sheet is not big enough without picking out a seam. Otherwise, just cut it!
Because you may need the extra material if you have a think mattress or use a mattress topper. How about you get a life instead of being rude about things you apparently know nothing about.
