Its a very Machine Head album. Its not their best but I had a great time with it. Definitely enjoyed it a lot, if you aren't much of a Machine Head fan then this album probably won't do a huge amount for you, but its definitely good quality Machine Head material, at least in my opinion.
@@benjamindavis4974 Honestly I didn't hate Catharsis, I really liked half the album and really did not like the other half lol, but I enjoyed Catharsis more then Supercharger or B&D.
Favorite album of 2022 thus far. No I’m not joking.
They have 4 good albums and I'm sure this album will end up in the middle of the average ones. Maybe I'll listen to it (I'm fairly easy to please) but I don't care enough to listen to it right now. BLIND GUARDIAN IN A WEEK.
They have 3...the first three.
The track that opens the album, 'Slaughter The Martyr', sets the tone not only for the album, but for the auditory and psychological exploration on which the listener is about to embark. From the first dissonant note, the song is not only a new canvas painted with the growing vocal harmonies between Flynn and bassist Jared MacEachern, but is also as furious as anything the band has done before. This track also begins the journey of our protagonists.
Additional exploration of the damaged psyche explodes in 'Chøke Øn The Ashes Øf Yøur Hate' with a strong dose of Thrash Metal that could only come from the roots of the Bay Area. Undeared in his attack, his mind-blowing rhythm solidifies the song as one of the many highlights of "Øf Kingdøm And Crøwn".
I think everyone has an album that all their peers hate but for some reason you love. For me that album was Supercharger. I got it free as my friend didn’t want it in his house. Stayed in my car’s CD player for 6 months, loved it!😂 looking forward to giving this a listen👍
For me it's the burning red.
I love Supercharger and h8 The Burning Red lol, Supercharger is a very underrated album imo.
After the part way of Adam Duce, Phil Demmel and Dave McClain, Machine Head are not the same.
The Blackening and Unto The Locust are the best albums.
Burn My Eyes, The More Things Change, The Blackening are the 3 best MH albums imo. The rest i can take or leave. Though i hve a bit of a soft spot for The Burning Red.
As a Sacred Reich fan I loved to have finally McClain back in the band, but makes me sad that the best MH lineup is no more. I loved those albums plus "Through The Ashes..."
'The More Things Change' is pure gold. Down to none!
The Blackening is a masterpiece
@@oskar356 One of my favs album of all time
Catharsis was a DUMPSTER FIRE! Also, when Machine Head released their EP last year, Robb Flynn said that they were moving past the cringy material of Catharsis!
I would certainly hope so.
Dude, that description perfectly sums up my thoughts on the album. I don’t think it’s bad, but it’s nothing we haven’t heard from them before. Still better than Catharsis though, though that’s a very low bar to cross.
Not as good as blood stone and diamonds
@@rossbarrett6821 i actually would put this on the same level as Blood Stones & Diamonds, maybe slightly above it?
Lustre, Hexis, Dreadnought, Sigh and Rapt all have new releases this weekend so I'm sure skipping this won't be a bad idea
New Dreadnought is really good, interested in new Lustre as well
I had no idea Lustre was dropping their new album tomorrow. I'll definitely be checking that out.
@@mindful2864 I'm looking forward to it, plus Buster Odeholm of Vildhjarta and Humanity's Last Breath fame was involved in the mixing and mastering, which I did not see coming at all for a freaking Lustre record lol
@@codybeinert1109 That's interesting, I happened to like the Vildhjarta and Humanity's Last Breath albums from last year so I'd like to hear how well this new Lustre turns out with his mixing and mastering.
@@mindful2864 you can check out Lustres new single, Thirst, to get a taste of what it sounds like. imo it sounds very good 😊
Only complaint I have is the drums, or more specifically, the drummer. Matt Alston was not able to record on the album, due to the UK's COVID restrictions (he lives in the UK, the album was recorded in the US), so there's a pretty obvious choice they could've used for this album, Chris Kontos (especially since he's on good terms with the band). But instead, they used some random session drummer instead. The drumming was still good, but Kontos would've made it soooo much better.
Okay, I’ll point this out:
In Slaughter the Martyr alone, Flynn recycled progressions from Night of Long Knives, Clenching the Fists of Descent, and Unhallowed. One of the better songs off the album, but it’s still disappointing.
Bloodshot recycles squeals similar to Old, and one of the other songs recycled the Halo chorus riff hardcore.
Three of the songs are filler, not even songs.
Four of the songs were released over a year before the album was ever announced.
Dude I’m just not digging it
Its a consept album so I think the fillers are in good a placement i did enjoy the album a lot sorry for bad english
I still don’t understand how this band got so big
I think its just a matter of them constantly being in the right place at the right time - their debut popped up just as groove metal was getting really popular, they latched onto nu metal & rap metal right as those genres were getting really popular, they kinda blended in with the NWOAHM movement, so on and so forth.
@@themetalmeltdownofficial Agreed 100%. It always seemed to me that Flynn followed whatever was popular - groove/nu metal/metalcore/thrash resurgence etc. and it's kinda ironic considering all of his "non-conformist", middle-finger waving lyrics
For me Machine Head has always been hit or miss. They have a few albums I enjoy (Burn My Eyes, The Blackening, Undo the Locust, even Blood and Diamonds), but there’s also several albums I don’t care for at all (The Burning Red, Supercharger, Catharsis).
Fan since 94', I'll be getting the CD as I always do, Catharsis had it's moments (a few) and from what I've heard this is a step up but I really miss the groove (and passion) they had on the first five albums, especially the first two, The More Things Change being their best, for me anyway.
As Machine Head have been a very long time favourite band of mine with nostalgia and admiring quite a lot of their albums, including The Burning Red. I was thinking if the band by this stage would be going in a step forward direction after the controversial Catharsis album. Although the previous line up when Phil and Dave were in the band was to me the strongest peak, although I heavily respect Logan and Chris a lot from the earlier era. That With that being said I do love the band and I am gonna be diving into this one with a fingers crossed approach.
Hopefully you get more out of this than me bud, cheers!
tbh, I actually really like this album. I think that slaughter the martyr started off a bit too slow for me and the interludes did kinda interrupt the flow, but I really thought that the album had some really good bangers. I enjoyed choke on the ashes of your hate, become the firestorm, arrows in words from the sky, and unhallowed.
Was curious as to what you use to review albums like do you have headphones or nice home stereo do you just stream it from spotify 🤔
I tend to just use my headphones and use either the advance copy link or, if the album is out already, Spotify. I have a decent stereo system but its for my record player.
Lol how fitting Vog is here seeing how Rob Flynn was on one of Decapitated's songs from their new album earlier this year.
I think I like that song better than a lot of the material here if we're being completely honest lmao
Arch Enemy is tops when it comes to "dumb, edgy phrases". Too bad Machine Head is following their lead. I was looking forward to this new Machine Head album, based on what I heard and a slew of great reviews, but my expectations are now dropping somewhat. I think I will still enjoy 5-6 tracks and then skip the rest. Oh well, still have the new Soulfly, new Meshuggah and Dying Fetus is really working for me lately.
Yes catharsis was weird it was kind of Poppy and heavy at the same time I'd compare it to the burning red but revisited in later years but this this in my opinion revisited the blackening at times and it's heavy all around
This was my first introduction to Machine Head, it popped up on my AOTY feed for new music Friday so I decided to listen to it.... safe to say it wasn't a great introduction to them.
Check out The Blackening, its pretty much the one album in their discography that everyone agrees is great
@@themetalmeltdownofficial noted
How did you get a copy before it’s release?
Advance copy courtesy of Nuclear Blast Records
@@themetalmeltdownofficial congrats man, glad this album is better than catharsis.
I like the new machine head. 8/10 it's sounds alot like bullet for my valentine..🤘🇬🇧
honestly for me it's like a 3.5, im a sucker for concept albums so that's why it gets the additional 0.5, but other than that it's mid. the riffs, drumming, and overall instrumentation is really good. some of the lyrics are meh. some are slightly better. i hate how every song starts of super soft and then goes heavy or starts off heavy and then the chorus kicks in and it goes super soft. some of the songs could def be trimmed down as well
I love The Blackening and Unto The Locust. I will be checking out this album tomorrow to see what I think. Maybe I'll love it; who knows? I have almost always liked Robb's honesty in his lyrics (except for a few on Catharsis and that freaking temper tantrum on Do or Die). That can be a turn-off for some folks. That's alright.
In other news, I'm going to listen to the new BlackBraid debut album stream that Black Metal Promotion put up on their channel. It's one of my most anticipated albums of the year alongside the aforementioned Machine Head record.
That Blackbraid album is AWESOME
@@themetalmeltdownofficial ISN'T IT? Holy shit, dude... it might be in the running for my favourite of the year in black metal!
Morrning🌶🌶🌶
I thought it was badass. It’s a huge step in the right direction, I just think Robb’s lyrics have been getting cornier and uncreative in recent years. I still love it, will most likely listen to it all the way through again. 8/10 for me, probably in my top 5 fav MH albums.
Machine head fire to me lol idk what y'all hearing
I can already see you getting pooped on pretty hard for this, so hope you brought your dumbrella.
I'll check this out, as Burn my Eyes was one of my favorite albums as a teen, and The More Things Change, Blackening and Locust were all pretty solid...but Catharsis was SO BAD that my expectations are tempered.
Cheers!
I really like this album, sure i mostly just go for the riffs and the catchy hooks, but those riffs fucking kill! I feel like this was up in the top half of their discography, i would put it right in between bloodstone and diamonds and unto the locust. If i were to rank their discography, it would go something like this (from worst to best)
Supercharger
Catharsis
The Burning Red
Through the Ashes of Empires
The More Things Change
Bloodstone and Diamonds
Of Kingdom and Crown
Unto the Locust
Burn My Eyes
The Blackening
Catharsis had three good songs from what I remember.
I'll be back, ima gonna listen to this album and I'll tell you what I think
I'd argue 3 is a generous number lmao
@@themetalmeltdownofficial Outside of those three, everything else is a wet fart on the same level as Chocolate Starfish by Limp Bizkit
@@themetalmeltdownofficial Heavy Lies the Crown, Grind You Down, and Razorblade Smile aren’t that bad, 3 is a fair number lol
I absolutely adore the album. Huge MH fan. Respect everyone else's opinion. Most definitely a mile ahead of catharsis though. Also through the ashes of empires needs more love. The blacking and unto the locust are incredible but where through the ashes came from (after supercharger), saved the band. Bonafide classics albums. Burn my eyes is great and then the more things change is a step down but solid. I actually like the burning red and supercharger is indeed pretty crap. Bar bulldozer and deafening silence. Oh, and bloodstone, solid enough, absolutely a middle ground album though.
Machine Head were one of the first bands that got me into heavier music, so I'll always listen to whatever put out (my name is an tribute to them). I actually wasn't as offended by Catharsis as a lot of people I saw when it came out, but it certainly became obvious after a while that it was Machine Head's weakest material. I was still relatively nervous coming into Øf Kingdøm and Crøwn. I can imagine a lot of this new stuff being pretty dope live. There are tracks on this that I'll probably continue to like and repeat for a long time, the guitar work being easily the strongest aspect of the record. It's got rough edges, especially the vomit-inducing beginning of the closing track (seriously what is going on?). I've accepted that this band will never release anything to the heights of Unto the Locust and The Blackening, so with that in mind this is a decent return to form and fresh direction I hope Flynn continues to leads the pack towards.
Same
Never liked them much, besides maybe a couple of songs I heard as a teen in the 90s "Davidian"). Always wondered why machine Head got so much more attention than, say, helmet, who did similar groovy/semi-alternative metal stuff witha lot more class.
The only Machine Head that matters is the Deep Purple album. Speaking of which, Deep Purple discography when ? 😂
I'd be down if it wasn't for the fact that they have like 22 fuckin' albums lmao
Hey man, I heard about Ithaca recently from you I think, and I like they fear us SO MUCH, so I wanna thank you for that, but I just can not get into Imperial Triumphant, I tried to listen to last album, but it just sounds like noise to me, not all of it, but it is annoying the fuck out of me xd, so I have question, should I start with something else, or is everything similar to that last album
I think their best album to start with is Vile Luxury - its a more straightforward album in a lot of aspects but it still has some of the weirder and funkier elements of Alphaville and Spirit Of Ecstasy. That being said, I can totally understand why Imperial Triumphant in general wouldn't resonate with a lot of people. Their sound is dense, complicated, convoluted, and just plain strange at times. Not exactly the most accessible shit lmao.
@@themetalmeltdownofficial they sound better on speakers for sure, cause when I listen to them on headphones, I feel like I am going insane with them, on speakers, I only feel that only they are going insane xd, now jokes aside, they are interesting but not appealing at all, but I am slowly starting to get into this music
I'm a die-hard so I take the so called juvenile lyrics like war as just telling it like it is it's a concept album and I have to say(my opinion) on my hands are empty the background ooooh aaah is simple yes but it works off of Jared Everytime he says my hands are empty it seems like a reset button like to try something again in life and the background chorus adds to that effect making it (again just my opinion) a very intense song idk the whole album sits higher with me cheers\M/
Machine Head was one of the first metal bands I got into, so I'll always have a soft soft for them. With that being said through, they've got a very inconsistent discography. It can either be as good as Burn My Eyes, the More Things Change, and the Blackening; or as terrible as the Burning Red, Supercharger, and Catharsis. I'll check Of Kingdom and Crown when it drops tomorrow but I have a feeling it will be like the latter albums rather than the former.
I'd say its more in the middle - its fine, it exists, some good shit but also some dumb shit.
Burn My Eyes and that’s it
17 out of 5 lol can always have burn my eyes and have it slap still
Its interesting, Machine head got the opposite reaction from what slipknot has been getting lately. Not to say I hate machine head I love the first 3 albums but machine head strikes me the same way as slipknot does kind of. In order love machine head you have to dig robb flynn, no question about that. Similar with corey in slipknot but I think they been getting away from the whole corey being the center of attention for a while. Do you think that if corey or any other vocalist were to sing on any machine head album. You could stand it way more at least?
I can't speak for other people, but I'd feel the same. The issue here isn't the vocals or personality, the issue is the inconsistent songwriting and how edgy and melodramatic everything else is.
What I personally find with Machine Head is when they do poor they do it very poor, but when they do great they do it fucking awesome.
Thank you, finale someone said what had to be said.
To me 3 songs, are just 3 ok songs.
2/5 you must hate vogg on it then robert absolutely checking it out love machine head the new decapitated is great tho
Monster record ! And the Ø are letters 🙈
my only complaint is that it has some horrible pacing, and some of the album tends to drag on a bit, i feel if they cut some off some of the feet, this could have been an amazing album, but it's definitely a step in the right direction
I liked Catharsis probably because I like Some Nu metal, I’m yet to listen to this album
Yeah, I get and understand the hate for Machine Head, but I’ve been a long time listener for quite a while and I admit to them being a huge guilty pleasure enjoyment for me.
Burn My Eyes, The Blackening and Unto The Locust are quite fun, heck I even spin Through The Ashes Of Empires several times.
When the band is great they’re legitimately fucking good. Absolutely love UTL.
Even the “earlier” albums that are icky/rough (EG: The Burning Red) do have the occasional “OK” song for me. Catharsis can fuck off however, I definitely agree on that.
But yeah after UTL you can ignore the stuff afterwards and I’ll admit the low points they have can really suck. Doesn’t kill my enjoyment of the band though.
Thought the new album was fine (In The Way of an “OK, You Exist, Congrats” mood) but far from their best. Better than Catharsis tho no doubt about that. Good review. 👍
just hope Robb realize that beer decreases trt
My Machine Head ranking 10. Supercharger 9 Catharsis 8 The Burning Red 7 Bloodstones and Diamonds 6 Of Kingdom and Crown 5 Through the Ashes of Empires 4 The more things change 3 Burn my Eyes 2 unto the locust 1 The Blackening
When the new slipknot album comes out you should just use this review but dub over machinehead with slipknot
Ok. I would love you to wrote a song for us to listen to lol
Hate or love the albums, but don't state you can do better than MH last album. Do you write music or play?
I do, but don't see why it would matter right now. You're probably not an athlete or a chef or a senator, but that probably doesn't stop you from having opinions on sports or food or politics. Why should music be any different?
@@themetalmeltdownofficial opinions are totally fine. You're saying you can do better than a professional musician in this case MH 2018 Catharsis. Prove it. Opinions are fine, you're better reviewing content on youtube than I am but you're saying you can spit words in a mic is better than everything on Catharsis. Theres sports teams I dont like but I dont state I can play better than is what I'm saying. Theres a difference.
Sorry to interrupt your breakfast.
As for this new MH album, it's getting mixed reviews, I think mainly because it's always a mixed bag. For every good part, something bad has to happen in it.
The Production is very good, but lots of cringe worthy moments. the gang choruses, the nasally soft spoken part to otherwise pretty ok songs.
There are good heavy breakdowns, but they are sparse. And that's just from the songs I heard.
I'll give this a full listen tonight, but so far,,meh.
I hope it's good.
Do you like anything?
Plenty of things, just not this.

@@CelticFrost1979 I never said I hated Machine Head and I review FAR more music that I enjoy than music that I don't. Your point is moot.
The new Machine Head is great. You're off the mark on this.
I never got into Machine Head but don't you hate it when eating cereal, milk always spills on your chin. I try so hard to not have that happen but it always happens. I really don’t understand
They hate for catharsis ??
Like wtf is so bad?
Badass riffs and good vocals etc
I'd go 3.5/5 personally.
While they do have a few terrible albums, the rest of their albums range from very good to great IMO.
Why are you reviewing the new Machine Head album, Robert? When you asked when I’m doing here, I asked for some breakfast lol. Seriously, though, good review as always, but I’ve never been a huge fan of them, minus their debut, which is a good groove metal album, but that’s about it.
Its a lil too edgy for my liking but its got some tasty jams for sure.
Just curious, do you have some non cringe, remarkable music that I could feast my hungry ears upon?
IF you want fillet mignon, don't order a bag of Doritos and be mad that it's not fillet mignon. That's how I tolerate groove metal.
There best song is a toss up between Halo and A Farewell to Arms both off The Blackening
What was for breakfast? I had chicken and potato soup.
In this video? Just cereal with fruit. Today I had scrambled eggs with sausage and toast.
@@themetalmeltdownofficial Sounds tasty. The scrambled eggs n sausage.
@@michaelmacvittie6977 Hell yeah, I get my sausage from a place in St Lawrence Market here in Toronto, its like a tomato & basil sausage. Delish.

Let me get this straight
Did i heard it correctly that this is a Concept Album based of of the Anime Attack on Titan? If so...I Think it would have worth it reviewing the Anime itself instead of the Album. Granted i think the Anime sucks ass and its way too dramatic and gorey for my liking (And i say this as i have Astolfo from Fate Apocrypha as my profile picture) but at least its better than this new album
Also, The Anime Meltdown when?
I want to know what Anime Chompy would look like.
Never lmao, not much of an anime fan.
@@blackwaterrust476 In the anime world Chompy has spiky multi-coloured hair and a magic pair of scissors that can open portals into hell and is also 13 feet long
I love Attack on Titan and is a great concept for an album. Too bad the album isn’t good
It's ok.still better than catharsis not saying much tho.
Machine head woupd he so much better with a good vocalist too. Robb flynn has abysmal vocals, even on great albums like The Blackening
I care so little about his band that when I saw the title my mind went first go the deep purple album, rather than the band. I have no interest whatsoever in this album
I've listened to it, this is a... 0.5/5
I think this is the first album to bore me so badly I fell asleep.
Burn My Eyes, The More Things Change, The Blackening and Unto The Locust are some of the band's shining moments. The Burning Red, Supercharger, Through The Ashes Of Empires and Blood and Diamonds fall flat. Stayed away from Catharsis and have pretty much lost interest.
As edgy as this may be, it will never be as cringe as Let all of my Sin Begin by Shadow the Psychosexual.
Facts
Machine Head are the kings of cringe bangers, even like the song Triple Beam off Catharsis despite the lyrics being complete edgy nonsense
Really I only listen to Through the Ashes of Empires to Unto the Locust. I will say The Blackening is mad overrated. Catharsis and Super Charger are absolute trash. I also thought it was cringe and shitty that they announced a farewell tour after the terrible feedback from Catharsis and announced shortly after they were back. Rob Flynn is … special. Eh. I didn’t really plan on checking this out.
Machine Head has more bad/ forgettable then good in their Discog imo. Burn my Eyes and The Blackening are the only albums I really like. Catharsis, Supercharger, Burning Red are fucking terrible.
The way Robb Handles politics is pretty juvenile and Amateurish now. Especially when he has proven he can do it well in the past (Again Burn my Eyes). Like Robb I agree with most of your beliefs a lot, I consider myself to have left leaning/Socialist beliefs. But My GOD dude please Robb if you can please at least give a little more effort in these lyrics if you are gonna tackle such topics or just don’t write about politics if this is all you can do now.
I’m disappointed, this machine didn’t give me any Head. Oh well……..Time to listen to Deep Purple’s Machine Head now😏. Good review as always🤘
Catharsis was alright, stop being so butt-hurt about it. This hate consensus bandwagon about that album that everyone jumped in with no valid reason is nauseating.
I couldn't make it past this video's intro
But you stuck around just how long enough to comment 🤔🤔🤔
I Bet you're one of the 2 peoples who actually like Amy Schumer's Vagina "humor"
Robb Flynn's bizarrely high opinion of himself is enough cringe to have kept me away from Machine Head for years now, and I seem to regret that less and less every time they release an album these days.
Some kid dislikes a good album and makes a UA-cam about eating Froot Loops... Meh

Oh god no, you're definitely not. Infact it seems quite a few people here aren't down with Machine Head, or at the very least, not this particular era of Machine Head.
This band has been lost since their second album.
I disagree. Its a great album. Yes i know they have a history of bad albums this one is good.
Agreed. This album is really boring and recycled . Songwriting is incredibly lazy, Rob’s clean sounds very auto tuned, and is very unoriginal. I don’t expect it to be a masterpiece like Burn My Eyes or The Blackening but I want to be a least decent but unfortunately, it’s just bad. Yes, It’s better than Catharsis but not enough for me to get my hopes up. It’s still a pretty bad album. I’m giving it a 1.5/5.
dude wooooooooow can you get to the point
I did. Exercise some patience bud.
Great album,disagree with the review.
Flynn definitely beats a dead horse with his repeated corny phrases and choruses. Always has tho
This album is good but isn't their great album. There is some killer riffs on there.
I think some people might be refreshingly surprised by the negativity of this review given the assumption that somehow your reputation as a 'Woke SJW' would somehow align with giving 'Woke SJW' Robb Flynn a free pass. No such luck for poor Robb here. 😆 Having said that - I think Machine Head and Robb are REALLY good riff and music writers quite often - but what holds them back, at times, are the cringe factor of some lyrics and vocal delivery. Having said that - Let Freedom Ring With A Shotgun Blast was, is, and will remain a bad@ss line!
Lmao I always find it really funny when metalheads are like "I BET YOU ONLY LIKE THIS BECAUSE YOU'RE A GAY WOKE SJW LIBERAL!!!"
