When I was in elementary and junior high all I wore was palm leaf hats and I almost couldn’t mess them up and I live in south Texas where humidity is almost always over 80%. The only reason I switched to the more common straw hats was the weight and how they held up in the rain because the palm leaf will take on a lot of water and get heavy and soft. That being said I am only 20 and am on my second felt. I don’t know how the first fit for so long with me growing but I guess if you sweat enough in it and the humidity is high enough they will continue to stretch.
I have a 6x rodeo king, I spent around 250 on it I think. The first year I had it I only wore it out in town, no work. I've been working in it now for 4 years except in the summer. It's done now. The problem isn't the felt it's the sweat band on the inside. It's come completely out of that hat now. It's practically in ribbons.
If the felt is still good you can have it re-blocked and a new sweatband installed. I’m sure you already know that. Glad it’s lasted you as long as it has.
So as you know from are last conversation I'm looking at getting a 100x cowboy hat, excluding May to September I will be wearing my 100x. I've gotten several opinions on how long it would last, but I'm told that I would be getting anywhere from 25 to 50 years. As someone with a bit more knowledge like yourself how long do you think a hat like that would last?
Yes it is very possible to get a fine fur felt hat to last well over 20 years. This is especially true if you are only wearing it for part of the year. S^C
i have a hell of a time getting rid of a hat that has held up well over the years. i put a new sweat band and ribbon in what was my grand father's 1960`s Resistol dress hat , but kept the sweat stains since i had good memories making them ranching packing and hunting elk. It's my work hat. Conversely i had a fancy white Resistol Straw that after one summer looked like i changed the oil in it. The Palm leafs from Atwood seem to hold up the best for 5 plus years then they get the rougher look of the Sunbody hats. Your laquer explanation made sense. I just recently did get my first custom felt hat and i sure noticed the difference versus Resistol and other off-the shelf options. What is the appropriate disposal method for an old hat that has served you well? Do the Boy Scouts do a ceremonial burning like they do with US flags? Seems like they deserve the same respect.doesn't it?
I've a 29 year old 4X Beaver Resistol that looks almost new.
That’s awesome. I have a 4X that has lasted longer than I expected as well. Sometimes a well built hat no matter the X value can last a lifetime.
