I was thinking something similar around 5:57, "I wonder how long it's going to take for game devs to start putting in secret, hidden content just to mess with boundary breakers like Shesez..." I'm starting to imagine games with secret messages to find like in the days of the Atari and ZX Spectrum, but with modern flair.
Developers have put secret rooms in before specifically because they know the fans are crazy enough to do these sort of shenanigans, so it wouldn't surprise me.
To a lesser extent was the idea behind the ridiculously placed coin piles in Mario Odyssey. Kinda the devs' way of going " You weren't really supposed to be able to do that, but here's something for your effort."
Remember, if you're ever feeling like your alone in this world, remember there is a Goomba in Mario Party 8 just looking from the void at all the people having fun in the minigame room. You are probably doing better than that right now, so keep your hopes up!
Something you missed: the Gun the Runner minigame starts with some pans over a surprisingly detailed cityscape while showing the 3 players getting into position before focusing on the stage for the minigame itself. I’d be interested in a zoom into that to see how much detail actually was put into it.
That table texture is just hilarious. Like why would they take a picture of a table then replace the original white texture with the white from the photo? Great video as usual, this one had a lot of cool stuff!
Could be some strange inside joke, as a Game Developer I can tell you that there are some eastereggs that are just for the Devs because noone else can get them because they are some jokes that emmerged during development :D
Ibakon Ferba Probably, though my first thought was the texture that was supposed to be on the table got corrupted or overwritten by the texture in the frame and the devs figured that was close enough and didn't have the time and/or budget to fix it.
My only guess is that they used it to mimic a reflection without having to waste resources on using some kind of material or etc that reflects. If you notice, the texture already had a reflection on it, so if they just put it on the tabletop, and made the reflection line up with the red block, it'd look just like a reflection without using more resources than needed, which it does at 10:27 I dunno why it was on the wall though. Probably was just a way for them to see how it looked in-game, and just forgot to clean it up?
Dude you're a legend to me and my brother. We regularly use "Boundary Break" as a verb and catch every episode! It doesn't matter the game. MGS1 has been our favorite and would definitely love to see more MGS titles :D I would love to get your autograph. And a low-poly Peach doodle.
Proto L well, UA-cam is a bit of a huge mess so I don’t doubt that. I don’t really mind though, most of the channels I watch are in my recommended already. Rarely do I check my subscribed feed.
Ever since I was 6 and my Aunt got the Wii i had always wanted to go inside that tent that you couldn't go into. This video brought back nostalgia and put my childhood curiosity to rest. Can't thabk you enough :)
Game devs sometimes instance specific characters that share different code from other characters of that type, so the goomba might be a placeholder that is pre-loaded. But also many game engines can't instance an object unless it's placed somewhere in one of the game scenes, so it could also be that.
I always thought that the reason why they had the tutorials in the void is because the minigame information screen was being used to preload the character models for a faster boot. So the information screen just has models in the void with a window to the tutorial screen, it loads in models, then those models are used in the game.
It's one of my least favorites and I can guarantee you that motion controls isn't one of my main issues if that reassure you! Best roster of characters tho and I really love MC Ballyhoo, this guy should totally be back!!
1:30 hey, it seems to be precisely in the place where one would put so-called "hardpoints", or "mountpoints", a transform ( == empty object only with position and rotation data) which is used as a parent object under which you put anything the character is supposed to be holding in their hand. usually it's really made to be empty, to have no geometry, but that's just so it's invisible. this piece of geometry seems small enough to be invisible, and its shape does really look like something to signal the orientation of the axes. so I bet that piece of geometry was there only to help devs correctly place the mountpoint, after which they forgot to turn the geometry off, or they just didn't care because it's so hard to see anyway.
I love how this game uses real life images for some of it's textures, like the grass, the flowers and even the hawk. Some may find it weird, but I think it's pretty charming. :)
Haven't played a lot of these games but the things we weren't allowed to see are super interesting. Great video quality and pacing thank you Shesez (and all the camera creators too). :D
So, I have a guess at an explanation for the weird "videos and bowling scores in the void" @5:00 It looks like they do two render passes here, one for any video or live-updating textures, and another for the scene proper. Rather than use a separate render buffer, it looks like they just draw the video/ui straight into the viewbuffer (the one that actually gets drawn to screen) as a sort of "scratch pad" and then use the results of that when rendering the scene, taking that scratch stuff and scaling/stretching/squashing it down to fit the in-scene display. Since the scene gets rendered completely over top of that "scratch pad", the video/ui pixels get completely clobbered by the scene's pixels, and the player never sees them! Except for the the void. The Void isn't actually "black", it's "nothing" - as in, the graphics hardware draws *nothing* over that part of the viewbuffer, and therefore you're left with the last pixels that were changed, those being the video/ui scratch space. The viewbuffer looks to be blacked out between frames, but not between video rendering and scene rendering. You can even see that some things are rendered at quarter-resolution (the videos), which is why they're always in the upper left hand quadrant of the camera's view, no matter where you point the camera in the void.
There needds to be a part 2 to this. You completely forgot to go over the boards. I bet there is some undiscovered content laying out of the eyes on those!
I love Mario Party, can't wait to see more of them get boundary broken! And fingers crossed for a great new Switch game that can bring back some of the former glory.
+Shesez - This is one of your best episodes, checking out games with so many different styles of gameplay / mechanics / presentation like the Mario Party series is a perfect fit for this show. Well done. I think Mario Party 10 and Nintendoland would be a couple of good ones to check out too if you get the chance. Keep up the great work Shesez!
You know, I'd love to see a video on one of the main two Klonoa games. The whole world is so varied and beautiful, I think it would be cool to see some off-camera stuff and find what Namco tried to hide away.
Why do certain objects jitter around when you move the camera? Like at 10:15, the flowers sometimes move independently from the vase if seen frame-by-frame.
The flowers in that vase are a 2D texture that face the camera no matter where it is, while the vase itself is a 3D object. The way the camera moves (by "jumping" small distances), the flowers get left behind and have to re-adjust to the position of the vase. As the camera isn't supposed to move that way, it's not an issue while playing the game.
I’ve seen hacks for splatoon 2 before (which are most likely private), so I’d say it may be possible to create a camera for it in at least a few months or a year
Mr. Sheep hacks on the switch have been out for more than a week, as far as I know. Sure, they might be hard to get/make and may be private hacks, but they’re still out there. The whole channel of Samuel Bessega consists of splatoon hacks and splatoon 2 hacks (I’m telling you the channel name because I can’t link videos, since I’m on mobile).

@@BoundaryBreak could you do a Boundary Break episode for Mario Party for Nintendo 64, Mario Party 2 for Nintendo 64, and Mario Party 3 for Nintendo 64? Thanks
On the table with the red block on it at the end, the reason the texture shows up on the surface of the table is because they baked the entire scene into the texture map including the lighting and reflections, and the texture coordinates overlap on that part of the table. If you look closely at the other objects in the room you can see they also have baked reflections that only look correct from one angle.
This was probably the first episode of Boundary Break, and what a fun way to start! I'd love to see you go through the other Mario Parties, if they have anywhere near this kind of detail.
I should mention it takes alot of time to make a working Camera. You saw when the Splatoon Episode came out and when Splatoon orignially came out. Now imagine it on the Switch, where it's difficult to mod.

A lot of these tiny things, like the thing on Toad's hand, "FMV's" outside in the void, or maybe even the blue curtains might just be the emulator messing up instructions. So some of these things might not even be there in the "actual" game when played on real hardware.
could be but is very common for emulators to be extreme accurate to the real hardware that even hardware bugs are properly emulated... (specially the ones used on speed run)
In Undocumented Discovery #5, that doesn’t look like an environment, that looks like the grey ledges on the wall visible from inside just extend much farther than they need to.

I like the fact that you included the original Mario Party soundtrack
A lot of these tiny things, like the thing on Toad's hand, "FMV's" outside in the void, or maybe even the blue curtains might just be the emulator messing up instructions.
So some of these things might not even be there in the "actual" game when played on real hardware.
could be but is very common for emulators to be extreme accurate to the real hardware that even hardware bugs are properly emulated... (specially the ones used on speed run)
The Offscreen Lonely Goomba: I'm a Lonely Goomba, stuck within the void. Guess I'll keep on floating for the rest of my life.
This was the perfect video for a Lonely Goomba cameo...
So awesome ! How you're making some hidden polygons so interesting, that's no easy job !
Your channel just keep getting better man.
Keep up the excellent work!
Much love from Argentina!
In Undocumented Discovery #5, that doesn’t look like an environment, that looks like the grey ledges on the wall visible from inside just extend much farther than they need to.
One of my favorites yet! Good job and much love, Shesez!
This is what I want when I watch boundary break, looking in buildings, finding goombas
