Go for it Robert, as I said in the video, you don't need to share it with anyone if you don't want to, its a self reflection and growth exercise and much needed for our own wellbeing if I may be honest, thank you for watching 🤍
It’s way better doing it yourself. You have control over the shoot and you can feel free to experiment. You can also delete whatever doesn’t quite work.
I appreciate your videos, Ms. Hopper. Your intelligence, passion and humanity resonate perfectly well as a complete, in tune voice via this medium. Thank you for sharing.
I’ve been meaning to do this, and after a huge breakdown recently and more confusion about myself I really think I need this. I’m just scared of hating myself more from seeing a clear view of myself
Hey Charlotte, first of all thank you for sharing that in here and let me tell you that I too understand what its like to feel like that but as I showed through my example and this video we can get rid of that feeling or making it more manageable overtime as long as we focus on finding our peace and balance. Wherever you are know that I wish you absolutely all the best and I'm telling you to not be afraid of confronting yourself, sometimes its the best remedy to end our fears. Much love!
Terrific! I've thought of doing this but have held back basically due to processing digital photos in a way that would make my image more retro, soft, etc. How do you process some of your pics such as at 0:43, nd between 09:10 and 09:40? I have no problem with regular pics but I haven't figured out how to do it as with the timestamps I included.I do prefer B&W images though as are yours.
It's film. So the retro look comes from that. As for the soft focus, well it's just that I guess. Manual focus preset, self timer on, and place herself on the chair roughly in the focus zone hoping for the best. In those shots, the chair looks sharper than her. So I guess the focus was on the chair, with a short depth of field and maybe movement blur (aperture very open and slow shutter speed for low light).
This really has felt more and more worth trying as time goes on, partly for working on your own self image but partly also doing it on film, which really forces you to be conscious of the process. Thanks for your reflections.
Your knowledge of artistic history is absolutely stunning to me, as well as I believe others. Yours is a channel that I constantly learn on as well as am entertained on. Thank you so very much!!!!!
Very cool, as always. I have been doing self-portraits for a few years now, in part for the reasons you stated, in part to explore portraiture in ways I may not get to do when photographing others, and in part because I was bored and thought, "I wanna do portraits and I am the only one available." A couple of times I tried emulating other's portraits, too. One time I was trying to get the feel for a rented speed light and got goofy with my camera. My latest attempt is going to be trying out a Cecil Beaton B&W photo of a very young Audrey Hepburn; she is dressed in black, standing in a corner, body in profile, face turned toward the camera, with her right arm behind her and her left hand in the open palm, "stop" position. The look on her face, the overall "don't think of testing my resolve to keep my privacy" feeling, are stunning. Oh, yeah, I forgot. Doing self-portraits made me more comfortable with taking portraits of others. Made me more empathetic and accepting when someone says no or does not appreciate having their photo made. Anyway, thank you.
These self portraits are amazing 🤩 I thought about documenting myself in film too and I did some already, though I think I’m still not over the problem of identity, how I think about myself and how I want to be perceived… I should work on my self esteem 😂
I take Self-Portraits from time to time and have done so since the 1960s. For many years, I would not show them to anyone because I thought of it as being too self-centered on oneself. I had never thought of this as being a way to show change and aging! And Thank You for using the term "Self-Portrait" instead of "Selfie"!
Hey William so glad to come across your comment glad to know you’ve been doing it for a long time now, and of course I would use self portrait because self portrait is not the same as selfie, at least in my opinion!
I love the photographs you shared! Very interesting work. As a world class introvert who also has struggled with acceptance, almost all my images are self portraits.
Hey Curtis from one ex world class introvert to another, keep doing what you’re doing, keep accepting yourself bit by bit because one day you’ll look back and see it was all worth it 🤍
Your video is really inspiring. I started taking self portraits during the lockdown. I started it to explore some portrait and lighting technique, but then I suddenly had to confront with my self image and how being also the subject impacted the final result. I felt uneasy and wandered if that in the picture was the image I was transmitting of myself. Now I'm taking self portraits a couple of time a year and I'm starting to enjoy it and feeling more comfortable an confident in both how I stand behind and in front of the camera. The suggestion of a photo diary is intriguing, and more so the references to Maier works on how to include yourself in the picture. On a side note, I'm not currently shooting on film (I started with it, but switched to digital along the way) and every time I watch your videos it makes me want to try it again :) As always, great work!
Btw, as you will see, I am not afraid of my flaws, quite the contrary. Comes with age, I suppose, and a genuine curiosity re How The World Really Works. Personally, I have no interest in portraits that try to make the subject 'look good'.
You laid out the case for this very well Tatiana, I have thought about doing a self project for the past year but I was never sure of myself until now. Thank you.
I would say as I usually do in the videos, you never know until you try, so I would urge you to do it and see how you feel about it! As usual cheers for watching & supporting 🤍
Hi Tatiana, I found and started following your channel a couple of months ago, so I am working my way back through your videos and I must say I find them entertaining, thought provoking, enlightening, and resonating all at the same time. In summary, thank you so very much for what you share. Aside, I don't even shoot any analog, all digital, hoping you don't mind! 😁 Take care, thank you 🙂
I struggle with self image and taking self portraits over the years has helped me to feel more comfortable in my body, although I still have bad days where I really hate the way I look but its becoming less of an occurrence. Self portraits have been one of most important things I photograph during my photographic journey because its really for myself. Like you I'll do self portraits when I'm happy and when I'm having a bad day or sad and being able to reflect on them and tell myself, bad days don't last forever and happy days occur more than bad days. Thanks for making this video Tatiana, you're an inspiration.
Excellent video! I enjoyed listening to your thoughts and processes on this much less talked about photographic subject matter :) My favourites of the self portraits you shared were ‘Self portrait with a hat’ and ‘When you’re not James Dean’.
As a maker of non-reversing true mirrors, I have seen how much more realistic our faces are when we are actually expressing ourselves. Mirrors reverse our faces, causing expressions to fade and disappear, and cameras are blank staring lenses, so we don't interact. See how much better the self portraits cam out when artists drew themselves while looking in a True Mirror. ua-cam.com/video/VMqmBT2FXJI/v-deo.html
I like to have a person in my photos . Sometimes I'm the only person available. I like photographing people who are posing for someone else. A candid pose. Selfies are interesting. Alot of great artist painted self portraits. Sometimes it interesting to me, to put myself in a mood, then make some selfies. Like listen to some cynical music by Lou Reed, or watch a funny cartoon like The Tick. I like Andrew Wythes paintings alot. He communicates loneliness, and dispare in some. I like his ocean related paintings alot also. Thanks for the great shows that you make.
Whenever i think of self-portraits i go to Nan Goldin's work. It's such a clear display of strength by showing what are extremely private and vulnerable moments. Haven't done such an exercise in a while, will get to it. Being Portuguese can't help my curiousity about which places you visited.
Self portraits are an excellent way to develop drawing skills … part of the journey towards truly seeing the world around us. What better subject than to observe something we think that we know intimately but maybe not as much as we think! Thanks for this informative and inspirational video! PS: I’m sitting outside on the deck with a coffee (black) watching on my iPhone enjoying the early spring weather here near Montreal … 9C, breezy and sunny. Drink, relax and enjoy … perfect, thanks!
That’s really well put! I can totally see where you’re coming from and you’re so right! And so glad you were enjoying your drink and surroundings whilst taking on the video! Mission accomplished :)
hey your website link from the description is not working :( inspiring video! it seems we have a lot in common and i am glad to come across your account!
I am my favourite model 😂 it’s so true that you make the self portrait public but at the same time it’s so private that no one will ever know what’s really about.
Some interesting thoughts. It's hard to apply some of the ideas of self portraiture of the past to the self focused culture that we live in today. If you think about it, all of these videos that you do are a type of self portrait. Don't get me wrong, this was a great essay/video and very interesting, but I honestly think it would be great for people to think about self portraits less in this day and age.
Perhaps there is a distinction to be made between self portraiture for one’s own interests and self portraiture for one’s self promotion (the type that makes up a proportion of image-based social media)? There is of course overlap.
Dear T. I have dropped taking photos for quite a while.. I have closed that part of myself and lost a lot of confidence. I struggled with self image since my teens and now I'm 35 and still work on it. Thank you so much for opening up about your own experience and process, this helped me look into myself and wanting to try it out. I was taking self portraits but rarely shared it, and will definitely try to come back to it. Also, I shall look into the book of Vivian M. Wish you all the best and keep doing your wonderful work 🙏❤
Hello Leila, first of all thank you so much for your comment and let me say that I do understand where you’re coming from, I dealt with self image issues since my teenage years to my early twenties, it was a tumultuous period for me and those around me, and I tried so many things to get past it but most importantly I found and accepted that if I were to start a process of healing and self acceptance I would be more fulfilled over time and happier with myself and thats one of the most important things in life because in essence you need to leave at peace with yourself and then with others and if others don’t like what they see so be it but you are the most important person in the room when it comes to your self image and self worth remember that, wishing you all the absolute best 🤍✨
Great video - photography is a good way to deal with some very personal issues that end up being some of the most profound experiences we can have. I started shooting film at 56 and it has been such a positive process over this past year.
As a lifelong photographer (commercial for 4 decades) I'm usually the one behind the camera, aside from on UA-cam. Nevertheless I have in my archives many self-portraits made over the years. Your video is thoughtful but I'm still extremely reticent to make that archive public.
Hey Raymond thank you for sharing that, well I suppose if you really want to share it (you don’t have to) do it at your own pace and time that’s what I would say :)
What a beautiful topic. I am very fond of self portraiture and have done a lot of it myself. Lately, I have been struggling with a lack of motivation and connectedness... thank you so very much for the inspiration! I believe self knowledge is extremely important. When it comes to creating our own language with photography we can only communicate what we know. I am sincerely grateful for coming across this video today
I love this video! I’m turning 26 this week and I’ve been thinking about doing a self-portrait assignment to review my life and thoughts. This video is very inspiring. Thank you!
Wonderful T ... thoughtful insights! I really enjoy what you said and the inspiration provided. Self portraiture was on my list, but this essay is a tipping point that broadens my thinking on the work ahead.
That’s fantastic Nolan! Really appreciate your thoughts and wish you all the best with your journey into the land of self portraits, have fun & enjoy! :)
I really hate self portraits. Something, nowadays, into these InstaCrap days, every teenie does....for posing, for unsocial networks. And for what? Yeah - "Likes". Some ppl really need that morale boost, it seems. Or selfmarketing. I can't stand it. I love to be into the underground, being unnoticed.
That’s absolutely fair enough Marc, although I think the content of this video is far different from the situations you’re describing. All the best to you!
Haha, interesting, as I started to watch your video, I thought to myself: wow she would like learning about Vivian Maier... Thanks for sharing how you use photography as a way for self discovery/healing/having fun. I kind of see this as some sort of dialog with one self. Peace Tatiana.
Thank you for sharing, darling, your video always could be inspired me for photography, but not just for photoraphy. And not only through a photographer method. Yep, we can learn from painting, drawing...music and so on. See you next time❤❤❤
Before I add a little personal story, I'd like to say that your self portraits on the Mamiya and with the hat are absolutely stunning ! There's a real atmosphere to them, a real depth, a real intimacy. I love them ! Now for the personal note : I have OCD. 25 years ago, I came home after 3 weeks and found that 6 mice had squatted my flat and crapped everywhere. In the heat of anguish that I experienced, I threw most of my stuff away : CD's, DVD's, and a whole box full of the hundreds of pictures I had taken since I was 13. I regret it deeply now, because I have no "engraven" memories of that time left. So I also take self portraits, from time to time, and I "document" my life now, because I know that in 10-20 years time, I'll be glad to look back at something. A bit like in this quote from the Kodachrome movie : "We take pictures to stop time, to commit moments to eternity". Anyway. Thanks for sharing ! Keep up the good work :)
Hey hey, thank you so much for sharing that, I’m glad you felt comfortable to share that with us here and know that we appreciate it, I know I do :) and that’s an awesome way to see yourself and keep a recording as you age and go through things in life, hope you keep it up and all the best to you! ❤️
You have a fascinating accent, your English on top is blummin 'ilarious mate. All jokes aside and in all seriousness, great video and content, very holistic approach--bravo. I enjoyed it muchly, thanks.
Very powerful video. I'm glad you made this video, I don't think it was easy to put yourself out there. I'm not sure I have the same courage. Maybe at some point I will.
Thanks so much, yes but at the end of the day I knew I had to put myself out there in order to know more, show my work etc. So my advice to you is follow your path, walk at your own pace and do it when you feel comfortable, all the best!
Lately I've been thinking more about how I dont have many photos of myself as I'm always the one behind the camera, so this video really gave me some extra motivation to start taking more self portraits. I love the ones you've taken here!
I’m so happy to have found your channel. Could you recommend some female photographers to discover, past and present. Many thanks. Love the topic of this video and your photos.
There’s a series on my channel about female photographers, look on the playlists page, all the episodes I’ve worked on are there, cheers for your support Jennifer! :)
I have to admit I put it on the side for months but I knew I needed to do something like this and not be afraid to be vulnerable if that makes sense, thank you for watching vince!
I believe the rise of the Selfie killed the idea of self-portraiture as a creative expression, and as a means of self-introspection. It is already difficult to put yourself as the subject of a photograph when you are trying to work out some difficult thoughts, and the idea that your photo is essentially the same thing as some vapid snapshot devalues the effort. Perhaps the right thing to do is to make pictures of yourself only for you to see, and for loved ones. It's a big thing for someone to share these deeply personal images. Thank you.
Thank you for your comment, see I agree in part with what you said about being slightly more difficult today than it was probably before, however there’s this care, depth and emotion in self portraiture that I never seen in a selfie, perhaps because even though similar in concept, they’re at their core different because they’re fuelled by different reasons!
I totally agree with you. Oh how I hate that word “selfie” an inane grin at a mobile phone, yuk! Taking a self portrait involves being on both sides of the camera, which in itself is a challenge.
Your self-portraits are lovely. Very nice work. I’m currently reading an excellent Vivian Maier biography by Ann Marks. Goes in depth into her self-portraits and possible motivations. It’s exhaustively researched. Highly recommended.
Thankyou for another interesting video. Some fabulous self portraits. And your thoughts behind each one. Hope that you're currently in a happy place. Best regards. 🏴👍
I loved the way in which you shot your self portraits. They had great mood. I did a number of self portraits in the 90’s on film and my last one was in 2010. A photographer I know shoots bands and individual portraits with a pin hole camera. They are really stunning. Great video. Vivian Meyer is an enigma. The documentary about her was fascinating and still resonates with me today.
Thank you for your feedback Simon, and honestly taking self portraits on film it’s awesome and a great experience overall.. Vivian Maier is indeed an enigma, I did a video about her and I still have so many unanswered questions! Cheers for watching :)
💢 you just inspired me . There are hardly any pix of me - since I'm usually the photographer 📸 of any group. But - now - I'll find ways to be included. THANK YOU ❗️ 🤗
I don't know if anyone's ever mentioned this, but I really like your use of typography for credits etc. Nice choice of (modernist) sans serif and tastefully sized/tracked. I don't think many would understand/appreciate this comment, but I get the feeling you might. The content's really good too, of course.
Brad I applaud your eye for detail yes I love typography and I get what you wrote about - it took me ages to find this lettering style and since I found it I use it a lot, love it! Thanks for watching!
Well, you're not alone in your assessment Hopper. I found myself nodding all the way through that. I wonder if the motivations are the same for everyone. Your reference to maintaining privacy even though your self portraits are on Instagram and the like, caught my attention. Having your private world reduced to the self was once the preserve of the damaged, distressed, public and celebrity. I wonder if it is now the preserve of complete generations. Now there's a project 🤔😊. Still the best tunes on UA-cam. I thoroughly enjoyed that. Thanks.
Your thoughts are very inspiring, even two years later. I never was a selfie nor self-portrait type of guy, but this video makes me think of this as a possibility. Thank you Tatiana.
I always thought of capturing a self portrait as uncomfortable. But after watching this video, I would love to try it for this reason - Like an intimate diary or documentation of myself.
Beautiful, before I didn't like self-portrait because I thought it was selfish, but after watch the video I think is more deep than I thought. As a photographer, I present to myself as "someone" because I feel that I have another identity...
FWIW, I think I like your self portraits best of your work that you've shown on your channel. I shall restrain myself from the almost irresistible urge to try to say something wise and insightful about why I think this is. But maybe the fact that someone reacted that way might prove useful to you in your work. Please keep at it.
@@TatianaHopper I got a reply notice that said that "Text me on telegram👉@T_Hopper " has replied to this message. Since then, the UA-cam spam gobbler has eaten it. Just so you know. Somebody appears to be doing some weird spam in your comments. Unless of course you actually do use that username ;-) ....... Meanwhile, I hope you keep up with the self portraits.
I stumbled upon your video. It was beautiful and touched my soul. You have inspired me to begin a life long project half way through my existence. Thank you. For everything.
I've been doing this on and off about a year for all the same reasons, and I'm only seeing this video now. You articulated my exact process around the time I began shooting self-portraits. It's cool to know that on the quantum level creativity is interconnected.
I just "found" you yesterday while listening to the Street Photography Magazine pod cast. Today I have been checking out your UA-cam videos and the more I listen to what you are saying the more I'm feeling inspired to try different things. I'm not a pro photographer but I have been taking pictures since I was a kid. I think it's time for me to explore different aspects of photography. I like the idea of self portraits as a starting point.
Ok. I'm taking this as a challenge. I've been avoiding taking self portraits for my website for nearly 2 years. I paused a minute in and headed off to order a remote shutter. It's happening. Thank you! (Your self portraits are phenomenal!)
Now you’re inspiring me to try this. I’ve never been comfortable having my picture taken, so it’s probably a good thing to try doing it myself. 👍

Your short shutter release cable is very limiting.

Thank you for sharing your insight...
You're very welcome Stuart!
I am my favourite model 😂 it’s so true that you make the self portrait public but at the same time it’s so private that no one will ever know what’s really about.
Tatiana…beautifully done - see my email about a Zoom interview…W
Some interesting thoughts. It's hard to apply some of the ideas of self portraiture of the past to the self focused culture that we live in today. If you think about it, all of these videos that you do are a type of self portrait. Don't get me wrong, this was a great essay/video and very interesting, but I honestly think it would be great for people to think about self portraits less in this day and age.
Thank you for watching and for your feedback Brian, appreciate it and respect it :)
🙏❤
Thank you!
That Kubrick portrait! Holy. Moly.
I've taken a few and they were out of focus. So I stopped. Maybe I'll start again. Who knows? Another good video.
Thank you so much Keith! And yes I’d encourage you to start again and keep on trying who knows!
Thank you!
I love the idea of a self-portrait diary i the past of times, I will give it a try
Haha, interesting, as I started to watch your video, I thought to myself: wow she would like learning about Vivian Maier...
Thanks for sharing how you use photography as a way for self discovery/healing/having fun.
I kind of see this as some sort of dialog with one self.
Peace Tatiana.
I’ve mentioned her a few times, I love her work :) thanks for watching!
Thank you for sharing, darling, your video always could be inspired me for photography, but not just for photoraphy. And not only through a photographer method. Yep, we can learn from painting, drawing...music and so on. See you next time❤❤❤
Hey there, thank you so much! Really appreciate it and cheers for being so kind and thoughtful, see you in the next one ✨
Cheers mate 😂 I've been partially adopted by Yorkshire
I think one less person taking selfies in 2022 is a good thing . So I will continue to point outward rather than inward
Ahaha fair enough Austen, each to their own and thank you for watching!
Beautiful in every way!! Thank you! You're amazing in every way ❤️ 💗 💛
Thank you so much for the love Logan, appreciate it and much love back!
Thank you for the video. I do like to take self portraits while on the streets but I struggle with creativity and new ideas.
That’s great definitely do it and see what you can come up with and I would have most importantly have fun and enjoy the process! Cheers for watching!
Love this take on the subject of self portraits i don’t think it gets talked about enough in the photography community thank you !
Yes same that’s why I decided to make this video because I felt in a way can be so helpful! 🤍
Love your videos and just subscribed! Amazing work 😊
Thank you so much 😊
How about some Cindy Sherman style? Cut loose. Thank You for the video.
It’s a great idea, but I feel like I have to be truthful to what I find and feel at the moment so I supposed it hasn’t come the time for that yet :)
I've done a few self portraits over the past few years. But I never posted any of them on Instagram... Maybe I should post one?!
Go for it! :)
A very courageous video. And wonderful self-portraits.
I have to admit I put it on the side for months but I knew I needed to do something like this and not be afraid to be vulnerable if that makes sense, thank you for watching vince!
Excellent work
I believe the rise of the Selfie killed the idea of self-portraiture as a creative expression, and as a means of self-introspection.
Lovely video topic, thank you for sharing - very inspiring
Thank you so much Oli, appreciate it!
THANK YOU. I really needed to find your channel, your experience and wisdom today.
@@TatianaHopper Always a pleasure watching your well researched videos. You have a great insight into the mind of the photographer.
💢 you just inspired me . There are hardly any pix of me - since I'm usually the photographer 📸 of any group. But - now - I'll find ways to be included. THANK YOU ❗️ 🤗
Nice video and point of view. In some parts off video i think i sow Madeira Island :)
Yes I did! Madeira island video coming to the channel soon… thank you for watching 😊
@@TatianaHopper ❤
I really liked your self portraits, they are beautiful. it inspires me to try to shoot more self portraits too.
Do it Simon it might help you in anyway :)
Thank you for such an inspiring video! Merci!
Thank you so much for watching & for your comment ✨
Well, you're not alone in your assessment Hopper. I found myself nodding all the way through that. I wonder if the motivations are the same for everyone. Your reference to maintaining privacy even though your self portraits are on Instagram and the like, caught my attention. Having your private world reduced to the self was once the preserve of the damaged, distressed, public and celebrity. I wonder if it is now the preserve of complete generations. Now there's a project 🤔😊. Still the best tunes on UA-cam. I thoroughly enjoyed that. Thanks.
Thanks for the inpirational video. To you: the beautiful Tatiana Hopper!😍❤
Thank you so much Carl, interesting take got me puzzled, all the best! ✨
Great video, you made me reconsider my opinion on self portraits.
That’s great Brent, maybe you should try!
This video helps me more to grow my own like in my photograph and self growth im too young and im always be a begginer in life 😊 thanks for this
I stumbled upon your video. It was beautiful and touched my soul. You have inspired me to begin a life long project half way through my existence. Thank you. For everything.
Thank you so much Chris, I’m so happy the video was helpful and I hope you enjoy and have a lot of fun in your journey, all the best! ✨
Thanks for the motviating and inspiring video. Let's start taking self portaits ...
I love “being a creep” 🤩
You're very good at... And I mean it❗️
Thank you Frank! 🤍
I would like to know more about the HOW it helped you. Specifics.
I think I was honest and open about it in the video if you’ve watched it until the end, cheers!
@@TatianaHopper thanks. Will watch again.
Interesting how you describe the juxtaposition between a posted self portrait as being both public and private. Great job!
Thank you so much! Appreciate it 🙌
Thank you for another inspiring video.
Thank you Andy!
Thank you for sharing your insights and experience.
