    I wonder if tasting the pre-ground first as the “freshest brewed” had any effect, since the later taste tests he was able to more accurately tell the difference? Does that mean pre-ground’s flavor viability vs whole bean’s is shorter the longer it sits? I’m excited to see more videos, love you guys 🤗

      Hello, Claire, and thank you for your comment!
      Our Professor values his craft so much that he tends to over-think things! You are correct in your assertion(s), as coffee that sits for extended periods of time will become "rancid". Inferring that grind size is the same, pre-ground coffee will taste more bitter than freshly ground coffee, and it will not produce a more fresh or desirable flavor. On the whole (brain), while pre-ground coffee isn't inherently "bad" (per se), you can expect a more enjoyable experience from a freshly ground bag of coffee--preferably, one that is acquired within a short proximity to the initial roast date (many companies will place that date on their coffee bags for the sake of transparency).
      I hope that helps, and keep using your Whole Brain!

    My first question is, are most pre ground coffee done with a burr grinder? Second, is the lack of freshness a fair trade-off for getting evenly ground beans that will extract evenly ?

    Most common pre ground coffee sold in stores has a bunch of fillers like wheat/rye husks, corn, and other grain seeds. Whole bean it is!

      I would say it depends on where you are shopping. Dunkin' Donuts original blend was surprisingly good. Peet's and Tim Hortons were decent. We have videos on all of those if you want to go more in depth.

    I didn't know the history of 8:00 coffee but that's a great example about how you don't have to have a good product to have a great business. That's a great lesson that every UA-camr can learn
    You don't have to have any good video content or product to have a successful business. That's one of the ways great CEOs succeeds with a dying company. Just get a good pay package and then move on to the next sinking ship and pretend you're going to fix them.

    I also heard preground has fillers in it so you are literally being ripped off if they cost the same.

      Not a huge factor by itself, but just another element that can mean the difference between a mediocre cup and a great cup

      Out of pure curiosity I tried some pre-ground "Organics Guatemalan" coffee from Safeway that I saw on sale today for half price. I think it's one of Safeway's generic coffee brands or whatever. I was really surprised because it's very decent to my taste buds, surprisingly close to how the tasting notes described it on the bag. I have been buying mostly higher end whole bean coffees, but this was a pleasant surprise.

    Probably won't see this because this is this is pretty old but David clearly knows to much about coffee. This would have been much better to have a normal coffee drinkers do this experiment. It's actually what I was looking for when I found this. The reason I was doing so was to see if it would be worth the investment for someone like me who drinks coffee every so often, to switch to while beans.

      @@WholeBrainCoffee I’m about to set off on the same quest. We have 6 people in our house and were looking for a coffee solution (we both drink pre bottled coffee or monster). I think the consensus is going to be a Bunn CSB3T (because made in US) and some sort of whole bean coffee. I think I’ll be off to watch your black rifle video next 👊🏻

    • @WholeBrainCoffee
      @WholeBrainCoffee  Рік тому

      @@pkmachinegun We haven't tried that coffee maker but it looks promising, especially for 6 people. If you really want to start going down the rabbit hole... get a Hario V60 or a Bodum French Press. You will need to dial in your technique with those, but as you get better you'll probably never want to drink bottled stuff again. In any case, freshly ground whole bean is a huge step up from pre-ground, no matter your preparation method.
      One final note, if you're buying whole-bean coffee from a grocery store try to get the freshest possible. Ideally you want to see a "roasted on" date instead of an "expiration date". The expiration date could be like 2 years so you could be getting some stale oxidised beans. Most good roasters on the internet roast the coffee right before they ship it to you for maximum freshness, whereas grocery stores have their own logistics and time-frames for how long a bag can sit in a warehouse or shelf (which could be a long time).
      Good luck on your journey!!!!!!

    • @pkmachinegun
      @pkmachinegun Рік тому

      @@WholeBrainCoffee I plan on really exploring taste of coffee itself (without any additives) as I am intermittent fasting and during the initial parts of my day, it’s only black coffee and water. I started down the rabbit hole already and have an electric grinder and a Bodum Pourover for the time being. This is okay for experimenting but isn’t efficient enough for everyday use. I also saw the V60 in another video and plan on looking into this for possible single cup applications.
      As far as buying whole bean goes, I think you bring up an amazing point in looking for a Roasted On date instead of an Expiration Date. I will probably look to see if our higher end grocery stores carry anything suitable first and then look online. I will be looking through the rest of your channel as time permits, but do you have any quick recommendations for where I might be able to find a fresh roasted bean that’s good for daily use?

    • @WholeBrainCoffee
      @WholeBrainCoffee  Рік тому

      @@pkmachinegun look into Uprise Coffee, Onyx Coffee labs, or Blue Bottle. We have videos on all of those if you want more details, but in general I would recommend those without hesitation.
      Of the 3:
      1. most recently, Uprise Coffee completely blew our socks off, especially for the price. Amazing.
      2. Onyx Coffee Labs is spectacular but they can get pricey if you're looking for daily use. What you really want are their higher end offerings, but I see them more as an occasional treat due to the price. We just tried their Echelon and it was possibly the best coffee we have ever tried (video coming soon) but at $150 for 10oz...
      3. Blue Bottle is solid, fresh, reasonably priced but wasn't as striking as the other 2 mentioned above

    I’m going to propose an element of placebo with the ritual of grinding the beans. Maybe not as big a difference as one may think, but, nevertheless, it makes all the difference.
