Good overview (love the intro and sounds in the background - bonus!) My first thought was: "I guess the cliche is true. Everyone who designs their first game as a fantasy-themed one, ends up designing their second as a sci-fi one." Like 'Castle' I like the sort of enhanced 'choose-you-own-adventure' gameplay, what with the dice and tests and all.
Great review, I got mine today. I still play EtDC every three or so weeks . We've not really moved onto anything else in the last couple of years. I always find myself coming back to EtDC, as a newbie it just scratches an itch. My wife loves and she doesn't like board games ordinarily. Hoping she'll like Dark Sector, can't wait to play it. I wonder if we'll see a return to the fantasy setting with these features after the expansions for EtDS? There has to come a point when Themeborne will want to move on.
I created a spotify playlist for this game. It includes a lot of cyberpunk type music. It really adds to the flavor of the game! I've got slow stuff for the random non enemy encounters and bass pumping tracks for battles.
@@tjleary I shared the playlist here but it looks like my comment got deleted. I'm not sure why. @TheDungeonDive, maybe it got caught in a spam filter because I posted a spotify link?
Love the literary intro. Great review. I love this game, takes the formula to the next level. Even the encounters are more interesting. Now I'm jealous of your playmat however Hahaha. Themeborne keep delivering the goods. Looking forward to the expansions.
Glad that you've got a chance to try Escape the Dark Sector. I have it next to play in a queue. I hope that I'll manage to keep the characters alive more often than in Dark Castle. :)
because of my poor english, i didnt really understand at 1:22 what is in your oppinion the best science fiction ever written. could you please write it down. btw: great channel!
I found that book to be quite challenging, it was so different to all other scifi I have read (got a similar feel from Roadside Picnic), but it really stayed with me and influenced me more than many other scifi. Now I want to reread both!! This game (and that app) look great.
Two great books there! It’s hard to believe that Stars was published in 1956. It still reads like it’s from the future, and towers over most other books in the genre.
You really should! It's a remarkable work of fiction. The only other things like it are things that were directly inspired by it. Keep in mind the fact that it was published in 1956 while reading it. It still seems like it's from the future.
This game is just way too hard. We haven't even gotten close to beating it. I was told it really needs to be played with 4 characters, but I'm not entirely convinced that would make a huge difference. If the difficulty wasn't so brutal, we would really like this game.
You’re supposed to die a lot. Kind of the point of the game. We’ve definitely won quite a few times though. For us it's a quick party game to play at the end of the night, and laugh about how bad we died. :)
Thomas Pike hey Thomas, nope mate, it the rrp is £30, the extras like plastic sleeves and a playmat then made up £80 of which four were left out. It took me by surprise that the materials used to additional game parts would be anything like that value. I backed “Castle”, have everything extra plus the Three adventure packs and while I was fully on board with the inflated startup costs, Kickstarter “Sector” seems like taking the space biscuit.
Thomas Pike so am I, and something went wrong with the player mats manufacture, so they weren’t included, but no refund issued. Your twitter stated £30rrp. Putting down cash on KS for intangible items like a pack of rubber sheets isn’t the same as having in the hand and actually evaluating that the probable cost to produce this stuff, is a fraction of listed cost. It still leaves the KS core game a terrific markup, and you guys had experience enough to understand what you were doing. I think it’s telling that your comment to a customer and backer is “[shown] the cost before ordering” is a fucking disgrace.
@@DaraM73 We can't understand what the issue is. We've done our best to explain everything clearly, both directly in reply to your comments here and on Twitter, and also publicly via our KS updates. If you'd like to try and resolve this, please email us at contact@themeborne.com
Wish i could find that mat somewhere...!

I appreciate all the related book recommendations. My Kindle is filling up with your suggestions. Appreciate this very much! Keep up the great work!
Sure thing! Glad you find them useful. :)
Just got my copy of the core game & expansions - can't wait to dig into it, thanks!
this is actually a point I've been missing about playin my games: creating the atmosphere.
This is one reason why I like solo gaming so much. I’m completely in control of the atmosphere.
Love the review! Loved Dark Castle and have now ordered Dark Sector.
Your take on it makes this game very tempting. I love the pen & ink art style.
It’s a no brainer! This game is fantastic.
Could it be, that the app you used is no longer available in the Play Store?
That's what I've heard.

How's the replayability on this?
Great! You will create a different deck of cards every game, so you'll never really see the same combos.
@@TheDungeonDive Ah thanks mate! I'd heard it gets a bit repetitive over time, but... it looks super fun to me. I'll probably give it a go!
@the dungeon dive Nice video thanks! Any chance you could link the app or give its exact name? Can't seem to find that "soundscaper" app of yours =)
Unfortunately, it appears that it’s no longer available. :(. Sorry about that! I have it on my old music iPad I froze in time a few years ago.

Thanks! The Stars My Destination, by Alfred Bester
@@TheDungeonDive Sorry for my unprecise timestamp: What book do you mean at 1:18?. What i understand is, that it is a book from Samuel R. Delany

Soundscaper
@@TheDungeonDive Thanks.
Couldn't find the app in the play store. Has it ceased to exist? Is it pushing up the daisies? Is it an ex-software? Or is it Mac only?
I just misread your channel name the dungeon diva

One of those boss cards looked like/was Pumpkinhead. The artist could be copying over images. Maybe not a big deal but feels lazy to me.
Or just an homage. There are hundreds of pieces of art. Nothing lazy about it.
I backed this on Kickstarter. It was over three times the cost of a retail box and no different, so soured the whole thing for me.
It was cheaper than the MSRP on Kickstarter. Are you talking about shipping costs maybe?
