  • I had to drive the Duffy Highway on my way north to Alaska in January, this is the most nervous I've ever been with the truck house... slick ice roads and mud tires don't mix well... this is part 2...

If your "extra crazy" you can double the cross chains to create MORE consistent traction. I have done this for my skidloader chains. Additonally, with your over sized rims you might be able to use an emergency chain. Which are quicker.
On the black ice (and reg ice) you can go 2-3x faster with cables. They are nice to have in your arsenal ...AND they would clear your rear spring issue . SSC brand is what we generally use.

Tim i feel you have kinda understated the importance of "being prepared" fueling up at nearly every chance, having a very good stockpile of food, having chains for the truck [i feel chaining up one axle on the trailer would have been prudent] and being very cautious. you drove on roads in conditions that kill people and made it through safely. great content and keep it coming!!!

I ordered Tires for my Sedan and they sent me the wrong width. Maybe they don't have the exact tires so they think you won't notice? I grew up in Colorado and learned how to drive in snow and Ice, pretty simple: Drive slow and use your gears instead of brakes to control traction and speed. I am always shocked (not) at all the people that would drive 80 mph on dangerous roads. Then you always see them in the ditch after they pass you. Next time you are in the lower states come sit in with my band in san francisco.

I enjoy your videos, and life outlook, but as a trucker with 3 million commercial miles, I can't begin to fathom why you would leave a perfectly nice Southwest environment to hot hoof it to Alaska in mid winter.
Now your butt is puckering with every mile, and that ice heavy trailer is a real encumberance in trying to make it up steep grades and icy twisties.

Timmy, sure feel for ya as where I live all the mountain road ridges are Marked 13% grades but by STATE Law they can only post them no more than 13% Grade being they are really 14% & 15% Grades. I Have 3 Mountain Ridges to go up & down & each one is 4 1/2 miles up & 4 1/2 miles down with hairpin turns in each of them up & down. Every time it SNOWS the ice is sure to follow under. been driving these roads for decades & always on a wing & a prayer. Like you, put in 4 wheel drive always a must & down load my gear & 5 mph is a speeding trip feel. 60 miles To the WEST OR EAST it is the exact same. One time coming back from a trip to the EAST was going ok until was coming down the last Mountain Ridge & started off ok then hit the worst solid BLACK ICE & caused to turn sideway for 1/4+ of a mile. I used ever coping skill & with no guard rails riding on the edge with a 940 foot drop off & finally gaining control to move forward. When got to the bottom of the road I stopped & peeled my fingers off the steering wheel & got out of my vehicle & took a piss. Left my motor running & drove on to the Mountain house & that was back up at 3450 feet with snow. Got unloaded & into the house & thanked my lucky stars & many Amen's. Watching you with chains on, take on that road gave me Nerve-Recall & I sincerely wish you will not take these kinds of roads ever again as you survived this time Timmy & so thankfully so but it is just not worth the risk factor in life. You have enough accomplishments in your life to have the brag'n rights of roads with Snow & Ice Travels. Hey, the Sandy Roads & Gravel & Dirt Roads should be enough to deal with in life's journey in the Warmer, with NO SNOW times. Over the years to many semi-trucks & cars & pick-up trucks on the Allegheny Mountain Ridge have gone to their doom from the Hairpin turn drop'n over at 890 feet drop off. They have looked at the Atlas Maps & today that lady that talks to ya & thinking it is a short cut not knowing the Steep Grades of reality & never made it Home. The state finally only did flashing yellow lights for brake check & pile of dirt at the Hairpin turns. That helps some but has never been a 100% cure for others. From late SPRING to early FALL one only has to be concerned about their BRAKES & to DOWN-GEAR going down or up the Mountain Ridges. I just won't get out when the Weather Reports from many of them call for SNOW OR ICE OR BOTH anymore. Take CARE Timmy. always, Tommy :-)

In a 4-wheel, I was always taught "chains on the front". Why? Because not only do they give traction, but on the front, they also give directional control.

Some risks shouldn't be taken. Gotta consider the consequences if things don't pan out. As a pilot of experimental aircraft, I'm used to evaluating risk and deciding go/no-go. But I don't think I would have done that pass. Bad weather that can render your vehicle completely uncontrollable in hazardous terrain is not a risk I would take. That sinking feeling in the pit of your stomach should usually be listened to. Drive safe, Timbo.

those chains are still on wrong... the "hooks" of the cross links are supposed to face outward to keep sharp edges away from your side wall. They do offer low-clearance chains/cables which are lighter, smoother, easier to store and easier to put on, but on roads like you covered, still give plenty of traction. Those v-bar chains are good for snow covered roads or off-road. Much too aggressive for cleared but icy roads and that why it such a miserable ride. In California, DOT requires chains on commercial trailer axles so they can help stabilize things on the down-slopes.

Holy chain! The something going on is the bad driving...you can't pass flying on a slick road like that 😵😵😵 I have driven in many cities and believe me, Caracas, for instance, is crazy...we don't stop at red lights when we make sure nothing is at sight we just go 🍹and everything is safer for a pedestrian than a pedestrian crossing 😅...never crashed the car...here in montevideo I drove a taxi for 4 years, never crashing either...the other drivers...all men...crashed everytime...not saying all women drive well, but there must be a reason in Brazil car insurance is cheaper if the owner is a woman 👀...they also use the mother's last name, so maybe there is something feminist about it 🤔🤔🤔. Greetings from Uruguay!!

The U Haul drivers have been out of control lately. I've never seen a U Haul driven like a race car until this winter on the eastern seaboard of the USA.

Whooo - that looked pretty sketchy for awhile there.
Also, is that Chevron sign really announcing 16.39 a gallon prices????

Haha, nope that'd be crazy, but it was $8 a gallon in a few places.

You can get a 1 inch wheel spacer to move those rears out to clear those chains.

My blood pressure went up 10 points just watching this and I think I might have lost part of my seat cushion ! I for one can definitely feel your apprehension on that drive to the extent I'm not going to watch the other part. I to drive a OBS 7.3 Powerstroke which is the worst vehicle I own for driving on glaze ice. Ole blue tried to kill me last year, got broke loose on a bridge (no freeze guard) and wound up ricocheting off both guard rails before getting him back under control. Wound with more damage to the concrete guard rails than Blue's bumpers and nothing more than a palpating heart and a stained seat cushion 🥴 Glad you made that pull in one piece, keep it safe.

Eh I've done that highway 99 into Lillooet a few times, always in the summer months and obviously winter is just insane sometimes with the steep grades as you come into Lillooet, also you said the name of the town right, it's a beauty place in the summer and it has a few wineries etc. Glad ya made it thru without requiring the assistance of the local RCMP, local First Nations Police or the BC Ambulance Service!

I drove the alcan by myself in an audi a6 in the middle of winter and nearly died like 4 or 5 times. At one point my car broke down and I was in negative 16F for over 12 hours. I went hypothermic right before a mormon family found me and rescued me. Sometimes I cant believe I did that trip. Quattro all wheel drive is legit, and Canada and Alaska are bigger than you can comprehend.

Wouldn't shifting to a lower gear, and keeping it in a lower gear, keep your transmission temperatures down? If you stay in a higher gear at low vehicle speeds, the transmission temperature usually rises.

    • @MrTowner

Low range and get a higher gear. T/C lock up should engage 3rd or 4th, without that slipping. You can beat on an auto all day

What tiers do you use? I see the brand but thats all.
I live in Norway and the roads you did drive is just normal road for me :D
But we use EU approved winther tiers that have the mounten and ice symbol on them. like Nokian Hakkapeliitta LT3.
