  • Growing Oyster Mushrooms Outdoors in Hawaii using Banana Leaf Substrate and Wood Ash Cold Bath with NO fancy sterilization equipment. Normally Oyster Mushrooms are cultivated on Straw or Sawdust, here we use Banana Leaf which is readily available here in Hawaii or in any tropical location.

    Hey bro, great video. I love in Ecuador and have been looking for an abundant substrate. Here banana palms are everywhere, so I'm going to try your method and see how it goes. I make my own spawn though with Oysters bought from the store, I don't buy premade spawn...

    Great job man. This is fantastic. Thanks for sharing. I'm over in Maui and teach mushroom cultivation. We've been experimenting with different invasive species of trees, all log cultivation so far but we're wanting to incorporate more low-tech, off grid, bucket cultivation so this is perfect! Mahalo brah

      We're super interested in using invasive species and log cultivation, the logs we tried all got covered in slugs so I think I might need to keep them under a dry space, it's so wet here. Any specific trees or mushroom strains you suggest trying out?? Mahalo!

      @@wildsherbet7077 Hey, thanks for your reply. So far, we've had success with Shiitake on Eucalyptus, Oyster on Christmas Berry, and Shiitake on Grevillea robusta a.k.a. Silk Oak. We've also inoculated mango, guava, wattle, African tulip, gunpowder tree, and schefflera. We'll be trying your banana leaf method in our next class to show others how to do it except I think I'm going to boil the banana leaves in a metal trash can over a fire instead of cold pasteurization w/ wood ash. I'm still so stoked that you made this video and that it worked for you!!! Mahalo!

    What oyster mushroom spawn did you use? I have grown a few different types of oysters in straw & coffee grounds. I used sterilized straw & grew in buckets (coffee grounds too) but I tried growing them in straw bales & they fruited but then other spores contaminated the bales and took over. I had success with wood chips I hauled all the way from Kamuela to South Kona where I live, they did well & had a lot of shrooms but they ate up all the substrate & died off. I have lots of bananas so I think that would be a great option. Also where did you get the spawn from. I bought from Mushroom Mountain sawdust spawn & may try again. Aloha

      @starfisher87 this video we used blue oyster sawdust spawn from far west fungi. Due to ag regulations it's become harder to order spawn online. We have luckily found a local source here in Ka'u. Our favorite oyster has been the king pearl. Mermaid mushrooms is in kona and she supposedly has spawn, but we have had disappointment in our interactions with her. Volcano mushrooms sells sterile kits that can be used as spawn. Either way great to hear your growing! All those substrates sound great, we recently have been doing cane grasses with great success. South kona, depending on elevation, should be prime spot for oysters!!!

    Hey there! Looking great! I need help! Haha... Mine colonized great in the water heater closet. But once I brought them outside, they have done nothing :( do yo have any great tips for me? I live on the big island, wet side in Kea'au. At first I had them out of the wind, covered, sprayed then every other day or so, but maybe they were in the direct sun :( ... Then after 3 weeks of nothing more happening, I put them in a thick bush of Buffalo grass... Still nothing. You think I've ruined them? Have any suggestions of saving them?

    • @wildsherbet7077
      @wildsherbet7077  4 роки тому

      Sorry to hear, Kea'au should be good weather unless it was too warm summer time for the pins? Some types of oyster won't pin above 65 or 70. Also, always check for contamination, that will prevent fruiting.

      Currently the mix I have been using is woodchip/banana/sawdust approx 40/40/20. I have found that the woodchips give it some extra life. we burn fires here pretty regularly so we just use ash from the firepit, hydrated lime also works if you are unable to burn.

    • @wildsherbet7077

      Definitely should work, was using banana instead of straw. I've gotten better yeilds supplementing with coffee grounds, but I don't have an excess of that. I misted heavily when they were pinning. Then once or twice a day while the fruits were getting bigger. It's really humid here so didn't really need to. Just keep them out of the wind/direct sun.

    Hello, mahalo nui for sharing this information! Do you know if using different mediums to grow the mushrooms will affect growth and/or taste? Any certain materials to forsure avoid or anything?

    • @wildsherbet7077
      @wildsherbet7077  4 роки тому

      I'm not sure about taste, but using different substrates will definitely effect the amount of time it takes to spawn as well as overall size of fruits. from what we know, the more nutrition available in the substrate the bigger the yield, but also the higher the chance of contamination
