Cool! All of this looks very familiar. I used to pitch my gutters out by hand. Didn't have a skid loader, though. I had to use a wheelbarrow and wheel each load to a ramp into the spreader. You do have a silo unloader, though! We never had one in our silo. Climb to the top every day and pitch it out. Not too bad. Keith-
The first few days we used the wheelbarrow and the spreader! Our backs really appreciate the skid loader. Cleaning barn by hand definitely makes a person realize how much they took the manure pump for granted!
I threw silage out of 2 16 x 60 silos, by hand- two times a day, two times around, as deep as the fork would go, then load it into a wheelbarrow, and feed 4 cows to a load- fed 120 head!
Watching your videos makes me really miss my cows. We sold the dairy herd last March, it wasn't easy, but it was time to do it. Have some beef cows now. Dairy industry would be so much better if farms were like yours. Love the videos. Best wishes
I can't imagine how hard that must've been to sell your herd! Good luck with your beef herd. We have bred a few heifers to Angus to start a small beef herd, so we'll see how that works with the dairy too.
Cleaning trench behind 5-6 cows was a job I never minded but a trench cleaner would be a nice luxury for 20+ cows. Nothing beats the twice daily physical contact a tie stall dairy setup has on cows, love seeing the knee pads, great protection and support for later in life. I know, I'm 68 and still do bath and kitchen remodels every day.
All the dairies small and larger ones are all gone around us. Walmart along with deans can take credit for that. My grandmother and grandfather milked by hand and when I started to help we had surge milkers and milk cans, then we got a bulk tank because the creamery was getting away from cans and carried the milk to the tank, then got a transfer system and in the end had a pipe line. Cows stayed in the barn all winter and when let loose in the spring they were happy. Always lots to do.
My grandparents also milked by hand use milk cans then milkers and pipeline had good times on the farm me and brother brought them in to be milked when we were young as we grew older help more in the milking pails carrying them to the tank.
Dean is even going under now, the production is becoming more and more consolidated, which means that the big guys can produce cheaply in a market that's already flooded by decades of subsidies with no real action to tackle the surplus produced by it.
Questions why do you put the hay in those metal rings? Question when you was in the silo the things blowing around what was it? Question when you was milking the cows what was the children doing? So good see them helping you. Thank you for the education I'm 70 old woman. GOD BLESS
The metal rings keep the cows from wasting the hay, the stuff blowing around in the silo is bits of corn silage and some frost, and the kids were bottle feeding milk to the baby calves when we were milking. Thank you for watching! And God bless!

Yeah the cows go outside as much as possible, weather permitting. We bought some big squares of straw that we spread out near the round bale feeders. There was a couple days it just didn't get above zero though so we let just enough out to clean barn quick and get them back in. The kids and I also like to keep them brushed.
Maybe someday u can buy the Delaval system that u can push or pull the milkers in on a rail ni more carrying back and forth. Ideal for your type of barn.if u can check that video out.

Just to touch on it quickly though. When Alan started milking cows he had no breed preference, he just needed cows, and the first 10 were Holstein. His next purchase was Jerseys. When we got married I was interested in the breeds that Alan's family grew up with, like the Guernsey's and Ayrshires. It just kind of snow balled from there. I will be going into more detail though in an upcoming video 😉

Farmers appreciated hooded sweat shirts long before they became hoodies. Especially going up and down a silo shute, and a cold, windy day.

Yes, as the family grows we would like to get bigger. Biggest thing we need is a place to keep extra cows for over winter.

What's the difference between grade a and grade b milk
Grade A has stricter inspections. Grade B cannot be bottled into fluid milk. Most creameries around us don't even take grade b milk anymore.
