Geylang Serai is a neighbourhood in Singapore that has a rich Malay heritage and culture. It is one of the oldest Malay settlements in Singapore, and its name comes from the lemongrass and citronella plants that used to grow in the area. Geylang Serai is known for its bustling market, where you can find a variety of traditional Malay food, such as asam pedas (sour and spicy stew), beef rendang (braised meat cooked in coconut milk and spices), and putu piring (steam rice flour cakes filled with palm sugar). Geylang Serai also has many historical and religious landmarks, such as Sri Sivan Temple, a Hindu temple dedicated to Shiva, and The Intan, a private museum that showcases Peranakan* artefacts and antiques. Geylang Serai is a place where you can experience the diversity and vibrancy of Singapore’s Malay community.
