No. Not even Vilayet Khan whom we all adore and respect could have done a better job with Darbari. Nikhil da has raised his audience to a higher level of mind , with his renderings of melodies the beauty of the raga with all its emotions are expressed divinely.
I agree that Nikhil Banerjee is absolutely amazing but I try not to compare the two. They are both my favorite sitarists alongside Ustad Shahid Parvez Khan. But I couldn’t say either is better or worse. They both have their own strengths and personal avenues of expression
Shri Nikhil Banerjee had played this raga Darbari Kanara,known as the king of all the Ragas in North Indian Classical music, with full devotion and displayed the serenity and deep emotion associated with the this Raga, in his rendition to make his audience savour the beauty and serenity thereof ,in his rendition of sitar playing.
Nikhil Babu played only Alap for almost an hour to demonstrate the depth and beauty of this Raga in melodious rendition of his sitar playing ,completely mesmerizing his listeners. He should have honoured with civilian award of Padma Bibhusana instead of Padmabhusan. His public performance hardly felt short of the expectation of his audience for their mental satisfaction. Very methodical in his approach to unfold slowly the inherent beauty of a Raga, while he used to play in a Music Conference.

Pandit Nikhil Banerjee deserved much more accolades than he actually got. Such superb rendition of the raga with all its purity is rare.

Ravi Shankar and Nikhil Banerjee learnt from the same teacher Allauddin Khan. But each has a uniq style of his own. Each is genius in his own way.
Difficult to compare masters, but I think Pt. B.was the better on sheer soulfulness of his playing.
