  • USING CANON R3 AND CANON RF 100-500 LENS COMBO. Was it worth ditching my Canon 1DXmk 3 and Canon 500mm prime lens? Unboxing and first impressions with a field test. Image comparison with examples of first images captured with my new equipment.

Just a note - with the 1.4x the lens becomes a 420 - 700mm, not 300-700. I have this combo with an R6 and shoot 95% of my images with it. I regularly shoot at 51,200 and 102k ISO with no problems at all. You should have a similar experience with the R3.

Of course you are right! I was never good at maths…. Wow …that’s a high ISO… sounds encouraging. I have just finished an episode featuring my processing a raw file at 25,600 ISO on the new updated Topaz Photo AI app. Its published at 2pm UK time tomorrow and show’s impressive performance at high ISO. The Topaz AI apps are incredible!

@@BETTERPHOTOGRAPHYCHANNEL I actually found your channel from one of the facebook groups we are both in. I'll DM you a 102K image I took just a few days ago. I use Topaz as well. I'm not completely sold on Photo AI yet as I have changed my workflow to batch process all my selects and have had to go back and reprocess some of them fue to artifacts. I found it easier to use Denoise in batch processing. Cheers!

A nice walk-through of the pros and cons of each lens. I'm currently making the transition from DSLR+EF to Mirrorless+RF so I'm considering the RF100-500mm as a walk-around. My main lens at the moment is the EF600mm f4 prime and I use the EF100-400mm ii as a walk-around and backup. There's no way I'm giving up the 600mm prime - I will change mine for an RF version, but I don't think I'll stop using this lens in one form or another until the day I can no longer carry it! It does things that no other lens can do. That brings me to the RF100-500mm. This is clearly a stellar lens in most regards - sharp, great stabilisation, versatile focal range when used without a TC, nice rendering of colour and tone and - most important - very portable! However, I can't get over how much Canon dropped the ball regarding the use of TCs. Not being able to use the shorter range with a TC is a massive fail in my opinion and I don't think I've ever come across this kind of camera/lens engineering gaffe before. If I stick with Canon (I'm thinking long and hard about switching to Nikon after 25+ years with Canon because they seem to have a better wildlife offering at the moment) then I will get the RF100-500mm, but as soon as Canon put a different zoom with similar reach on the market that can take a TC without forcing you to the long end, then I'll switch out. Thanks for the video - I hope the RF100-500mm gives you great images, which I'm sure it will 👍

Thank you my friend. I agree that the t/c range is a disappointment as I will still need to use my back up 70-200 2.8 with my 5D my 3 for closer subjects. However as I live in the UK and there are limits on hand luggage weight restricting me to just one airline this will open up lots of new travel opportunities too. I am planning to expand my channel to include travel guides so my major reason for purchasing this kit is for video use and it’s brilliant! My 500 f/4 is way too heavy to use for video.

I think I must be in the minority on the tele converter issue. When I put on the teleconverter, it's to get extra reach. I don't find myself trying to zoom out below 420-700 range. Also, one can't extol the virtues of a wonderfully compact lens while complaining that, when collapsed, the teleconverter won't work.

That’s a good point. I have never used my 500f4 prime and wished it was shorter. In fact its usually the opposite I am wishing for.

Wow, you lucky chap. An R3 and those lenses, not only that but your good lady is a fabulous talent as well. Congratulations to you both. I’m using a R6 mk1 and a sigma 150-600 great combo but a tad heavy for an old fella like me 😂 Would love to get my hands on a dedicated RF lens. Ho hum, one day. Keep doing what you do, love your approach. Does your wife have a UA-cam channel? Would love to see more. Thanks again Phil. AKA keepclickingphotography

Thank you for your kind words. I’ll pass your compliment on to my wife. She does not have a channel but we both have a website. www.chrishadfield.co.uk. and. www.kenhadfield.co.uk.
We are about to collaborate on a new venture for a month long trip to Kruger Park in October. I’m capturing video and she will take the still shots so we can publish a multi episode travel guide to the Park. Lots of scenery, wildlife and photo settings and tips. Counting down the days… especially after the recent weather in UK.

Good video. The RF 100-500mm is shockingly good. I hardly touch my RF 70-200mm f/2.8. I should probably sell the RF 70-200mm f/2.8 and get the RF 100-300mm f/2.8, but I need to give that zoom a solid run for a week or so to be sure its worth the outlay as I worry - a lot - that it will end up "sitting there" next to the RF 100-500mm.

Just discovered your channel and subscribed. Nicely presented and an inspiring set of images you got already! I was wondering if you use noise reduction software like DxO PureRaw for your final versions? I use this lens with an R6II and even when there's little noise I have a habit of running most of my bird images through it, just for that extra bit of detail.

Fantastic analysis of the benefits and perceived limits of each lens. I have the RF 100-500 with the R3, just like you! This is after owning the EF 400mm f5.6L for some time and loving the images but finding it hard to get the right composition.
I’m curious about the RF 100-300 f2.8 with a 2x teleconverter on it for Safari!?

    hi there
I've had the same combination as you have for a while now, and I can assure you that you have a top combination. my only objection to this lens is its high aperture value, which are a disaster, otherwise this lens is really great, and sharper than the recently released canon Rf 100-300 F/2.8, which is not really sharp with an extender . unfortunately.

Great video! When it comes to reach my R7 has been amazing. I have both the 100-500 and the 800F11 and both are great on that camera. I bought the teleconverter and once on the 100-500 you are at F10 so its not much difference than the 800F11 and it has more reach. I also picked up a R6 mark II. Losing that 1.6x crop and also going from 32 megapixels to 24 is pretty big jump. The R6 mark II did pull ahead in low light but so far the R7 has been my favorite for my bird photography. If it were me I think I would have picked either of those cameras instead of another R3. Then you guys can trade off depending on your preference. That would save some $ for when R5 mark II comes out. :^)

Thanks my friend. I take your point but my wife chose to follow me with the R3. So far we are both very happy with the results although we are continuing to test. I’m going back to the moorlands tomorrow to try and get some flight shots of the lapwings and curlews. Then on Wednesday it’s a trip to our local wetlands for avocets, terns and gulls. Hoping to get some good footage to post on Friday.

I have a question. I noticed that you really like the R3, so much that you purchased another one. I can understand that as it is such an amazing Camera. Being that the R3 has 24 megapixel resolution compared to R5 which has 45 megapixels. Is the lower MP not something that is a concern for you & your wife when shooting wildlife ? Do you shoot landscape as well ?

    • @BETTERPHOTOGRAPHYCHANNEL
      @BETTERPHOTOGRAPHYCHANNEL  3 місяці тому +1

We are very happy with the resolution and the mp is not an issue. In fact having huge files would be difficult for us especially as our wildlife travels often involve returning with up to 20,000 images. The results are absolutely fine for us and we can always use Topaz to upscale and improve quality. We are not landscape photographers.

does the r3 have a 1.6 crop option like the r6mk2, i have the r6mk2 and regulary use the 1.6 crop to get that bit closer and really cant tell the difference in image quality when not using it to just cropping in post.
