  • this is a video i made to the US Coast Guard's anthem "Semper Paratus". the Coast Guard doesn't get as much attention as the other branches, until that is you're drowning in the fridged waters of the Atlantic Ocean and your only hope is that one of those Beee...autiful orange 'n' white choppers comes over the horizon.
The Lyrics (sung between 0:21 and 0:53) are,
We're always ready for the call
We place our trust in thee!
through surf and storm and howlin' gale high shall our purpose be!
    Semper Paratus is our guide,
    Our Fame and glory too...
to fight, to save or fight and die
Aye! Coast Guard we're all for you!

Many people don't realize that during WW2 the guys who operated the landing craft for the D-Day invasion were Coast Guardsmen.

The Coast Guard is unique among the five armed services in having both a military and a federal law enforcement role. The Coast Guard and it's processor the US Revenue Cutter Service have fought in every maritime war in our Nation's history, including the Quasi-War with France in 1799. The revenue cutter McCullough was with Admiral Dewey at Manila Bay, 1898. Coast Guard Signalman First Class Douglas Albert Munro was awarded the Medal of Honor posthumously for his heroism during savage fighting at Point Cruz during in the Second Battle of the Matanikau, part of the Guadalcanal Campaign. Many other heroic battlefield actions. So anyone who claims the Coast Guard is not "military" -- get the hell out of here!

I Served Honorably For 4 Years (1966-1970), And I'm Very Proud Of It. Don't Call Me And Other Fellow Coasties, Shallow Water Sailors, Hooligan's Navy, Or Puddle Pirates. Most Of Us Have Had & Have Seen More Green Water Under Our Decks, Than Many Will Ever Hope To See. Many Have Served In Vietnam, And Other Wars. Many Have Lost Life And Limb In Peacetime Rescue Missions, To Save Other Innocent Lives. We Are Proud, & We Are The Elite. Harold Tartell Harold, I'm not a veteran. But you don't have to be a veteran to love this nation. Unfortunately, there are too many who have been taught to hate their own nation. They need to step back, reexamine what they've told, and then they will realize the lies that the liberal left are laying on them. America has made lots of mistakes. That's inevitable for anyone. It's the freedom to do something about it that matters. That's what we have. If we are to keep our freedoms, we must do it responsibly. God bless America and her allies in the cause of freedom! It is something we will lose if our current leaders have their way.

They are our national maritime police force...and I'll surely bet that if you are/were ever rescued by the Coast Guard, you'll want to hug and kiss each Coastie on that helicopter/cutter like they were your own son/daughter! Here's the whole song:
    First Verse:
From Aztec Shore to Arctic Zone,
    To Europe and Far East,
The Flag is carried by our ships
    In times of war and peace;
And never have we struck it yet
    In spite of foemen's might,
Who cheered our crews and cheered again
    For showing how to fight.
    Chorus:
We're always ready for the call,
We place our trust in Thee.
Through surf and storm and howling gale,
    High shall our purpose be.
    "Semper Paratus" is our guide,
    Our fame, our glory too.
To fight to save or fight and die,
Aye! Coast Guard we are for you!
    Second Verse:
    SURVEYOR and NARCISSUS,
    The EAGLE and DISPATCH,
    The HUDSON and TAMPA,
    These names are hard to match;
    From Barrow's shores to Paraguay,
    Great Lakes or ocean's wave,
The Coast Guard fights through storms and winds,
    To punish or to save.
    Third Verse:
    Aye! We've been always ready!
To do, to fight, or die
Write glory to the shield we wear
    In letters to the sky.
To sink the foe or save the maimed,
    Our mission and our pride.
We'll carry on 'til Kingdom Come,
    Ideals for which we've died.

My grand father was a coastie during ww2. And died when an artillery shell hit the landing craft he was driving. Anybody who says that the coast guard is stupid, harms the memory of him and other coast guardsmen. And my great uncle was working in Cape cod the night the Pentledon and fortmercer accidents happened. Of course he was off duty and stuck at home, but he was able to eventually get to the Mercer after it sank and helped with wreckage clean up.

During my service in the U.S. Navy, my most memorable moment was assisting the Coast Guard with the rescue of merchant seamen when their vessel sank. The Coast Guard helicopters landed on our aircraft carrier to refuel in order to complete the round trip.
If I were allowed to re-live my life again, I would choose to serve as a U.S. Coast Guard SAR (Search And Rescue) pilot. I would get more satisfaction saving lives than taking lives.
Bravo Zulu to all my comrades from the Coast Guard.

My father warned of the Dangers in the Coast Guard, his ship the Minesweeper YMS 133 went down with all hands lost off Coos Bay Oregon Feb 20 1943. Dad was sent to Alaska to crew a Yippee Boat (Coastal Patrol). It was so cold.. they had to cook with a blowtorch. The Coast Guard has always been a Class Act. Never say anything bad about the Coast Guard, they are Part of The Navy In Time of War.
Remember. Veterans died for your freedom.

The Coast Guard often doesn't get the recognition it deserves.

And of all of the military anthems, I like the Coast Guard's the best.

As a former destroyer sailor and having crossed the Atlantic in a 50 foot J-boat I have the utmost respect for U.S. Coast Guard seamanship (the very best) and uncanny ability to find a boater in distress. For example 3 AM and 26 miles 270 degrees from Rosarito (where you'd least expect it) within minutes of a spinnaker problem -- they appear. WOW! And they are incredibly able. Utmost respect to these fearless sailors.

When your ship is in deep do-do there is only one service that is trained to come to your aid and I tip my hat to them.

It really sucks that people think the Coast Guard isn't a military branch. They go to boot camp, they learn the Chain of Command, rank structure, how to wield a rifle, close drill, physical fitness, and discipline. I've watched the Coast Guard at boot camp. Simply no joke. They all think it's going to be a push-over. I loved their faces when they got there. Marines, Sailors, Soldiers, Airmen, if they say anything bad about Coasties, they have no respect for themselves and the country they serve.

George -- yep, in 1919 -- and I think I'm one of the few! I first learned about it through medal collecting many years ago, with the NC-4 Medal, which was authorized by Congress in 1929 for award to those who participated in the epic 1919 flight. Originally a larger "table medal" it was also struck in a standard-sized "wearable" medal for the military tunic. Originals are very rare, as you can imagine. I have a good "museum-quality" copy in my collection. Brave men, the crew of the NC-4. .

Good video, I think the coast guard hymn is the best one of them all. I've spent 32 1/2 years in the army, but my son joined the coast guard. We are very proud parents and our prayers go out to all coasties. Well actually all servicemen and women. Stay safe and come home!

@Phantomregiment8 my dad has served 18 years in the USCG plus 2 in the army and i intend on joining after i graduate. From my experiences, the under-credited CG is amazing. i have never met such a close-knit group of guys. i wouldn't suggest joining if you don't like boats though, or rough seas, or harsh weather or seeing the entire American coastline. try applying to the academy before you enlist, you get better pay. hope it helps.

I served in the Army, 4 yrs 3 mos 2 days. I shot cannons and kept Kansas awake at night.
Then I served in the Coast Guard 5 yrs 2 days. I rode out "The Perfect Storm" searching for a fishing boat lost at sea on the USCGC Northland (WMEC904); Then I served on the USCGC Gallatin (WHEC721) and hunted and captured drug smugglers then rescued Haitian immigrants sailing on unseaworthy vessels on the same day in the Caribbean Sea; among other unsaid operations.
The Army was easy by comparison.

Thanks, for posting this - speaking of pirates, I lived in Alameda when the USCG, the US Marshalls, the DEA and the FBI cooperated with the SFPD to "arrest" a ship, deport its crew, and confiscate its cargo of illegal substances being delivered to the U.S. God damn the pusher man, and God bless the US Coast Guard for protecting us from an insidious enemy. You could say, "yeah, we'd just make it ourselves," and you'd be right. That day, though, enemies foreign & domestic stood down.

@retiredcgw Everybody, he is right. The Coast Guard is involved in wars. Even part of the lyrics say "Our flag is carried by our ships in time of war, and peace." Also research wikipedia. Search "U.S. Coast Guard", and it will show the wars they fought in.

Semper Paratus ! On this day in 1790, Congress authorized Secretary Alexander Hamilton's proposal to build 10 new cutters, starting the Revenue Cutter Service. Through these 229 years, we've grown, adapted, transitioned and developed into our modern day Coast Guard - the longest continuous seagoing service. #HBDCoastGuard #CG229

The Coast Guard never gets the credit that they are due. Just watching the video indicates it. They're more than just the "fresh water sailors" the Navy 2:53 makes them out to be. And I say that as a former Marine and retired Navy reservist (Yes, there IS such a thing.).
And their march is pretty cool too.
