And thank you..
I started with a 55g, stocked with rainbows now. Just got my first 10g a month ago for my gfs first fish, a betta. The 10 gal is a nice easy tank to maintain, much less work then my heavily planted 55 lol
3 years later, dang sorry she left you and made you take care of the kids.
I like a 10g. You can fit it anywhere and stock it with all those little wonders.
Very true!
I enjoy the 10 gallon. Great tank for the hardier species since water parameters can still be a little dicey depending on stocking options
Are u saying the parameters are dicey because of the small amount of water?
@@XPrincess30 yes
One thing that I like about today 10 gallon tanks people can really Aquascape them things like it ain't like it's nobody's business!
Hi. I'm new to fish keeping. I currently have 3 tanks. I have a new 10 gallon aquarium with a Betta, 2 CoryDoras, 6 Neon Tetras, and 1 Mystery Nail. I just uploaded a video of my 10 gallon and would appreciate any comments or suggestions to make my tank better. I went to buy plants this weekend but my LFS will have their plants restocked on Thursday so I will be going back soon! My other tank holds 4 female Bettas. Not really sure if that's considered a sorority but I will be uploading a video soon. My last tank just has 1 Betta in it. Thank you so much.
A 10g kit tank is the most cost effective way to get into the hobby if you are on a budget. It is also my go to size for kids wanting 1st tank to learn with.
Wishing you and Joanna a Happy New Year!
Happy New Year! I agree - it's a good size for kids to see if they will stick with it.
I personally have 20, 10 gallon tanks for my guppies. They are one of favorite sized tanks. Also do you have a video about stocking ideas for a 29?
Not yet, but I will soon!
I just got 2 10 gallon tanks from Petco 😱 you're psychic
Nice!
I have two 10 gallons that I just love. One is heavily planted w/ just amanos and the other has cory cats & white cloud minnows. I have other larger tanks, including a 65, but I still come back to really loving my 10s. Easy to clean and well, they're cute! And my water in them always looks so amazingly crystal! So YES, they are worth it!
It a great tank to start of with
I started with a 10 gallon, then bought a 29 gallon, then a 55 gallon. Then I got tired of cleaning the 55 and 29 gallon, so I sold both of them on offer up and now I am back to just having a 10 gallon. The reason I kept the 10 gallon is because it’s small enough to put in my bedroom and not look weird.
I'd rather have ten 10 gallons than one 100 gallon lol.
I wouldn't
I’ve got 5 on one table and I love it so many options and with nano special I spend so many hours just enjoying the tanks
Well done as usual. I've never felt that a 70 gallon tank is any easier to maintain than a 10 gallon tank. Depends how it's stocked. I think you should learn on a smaller tank. Larger tanks crash slower and generally more difficult if you don't maintain it. The fish in larger tanks experience more "chronic stressors" resulting in more bacterial problems that result from this long term stress. Just my opinion.
Happy New Year Jason. Really enjoy your videos. I have great success with tanks from 20 gallon up. I have a Betta 10 gallon and I am struggling with organics and sediment looks like brown dust everywhere. It is filtered with a Ehiem 150 and a small sponge to help with the dirt. I belive it is due to either the tight sealed lid I have to stop the snails who like to escape or my household water but my other larger tanks are stable and my plants are growing great. Now I am making a mesh lid and running Polyfilter pads. To tell you how bad it is my Anubias are dying. Hoping to solve this small tank issue.
That always stinks when a tank isn't quite dialed in yet. Sounds like you are taking the right steps to figure it all out!
Hi Jason,
Am very new into the aquarium hobby. My first tank was a 55 gallon, with lots of live plants and various fish species.
I just set up and cycled a heavily planted 10 gallon tank. Put in a few nerite snails and an Otocinclus to start off with.
So the point is, I actually prefer the 10 gallon in some ways. Quick to set up, easy to clean \ water change and overall neat appearance.
Thanks for reading and also doing what you do by making these wonderful, educational videos that help new hobbyists.
Personally, I learned a lot by your videos and I thank you for that....😁
Happy New Year and keep up the great work you are doing. 👍
That's great to hear! Thanks for watching!
Also price, outside the dollar a gallon sale they only cost about $14 US
20 gallon longs is generally the smallest tank for my use. But then by the time I put on an AquaClear 50 with an AquaClear 70 sponge for a prefilter and large sponge filter I'm down to about a ten gallon of water set up.🤗🤣
Excellent video! 😀
One thing I would like to add is the sizing of the tanks also depends on which country you live in because here in the UK the tank sizes are measured completely differently to the US & Canada so here in Europe we would probably start on 17L / 4 1/2 gallons for a nano and also another example of this would be my goldfish started off on a 54L / 14 gallon tank and have been there quite happily for the last 2 1/2 years and it’s only now that I’m having to upgrade because they recently started to go on a massive growth spurt and now I need to upgrade ASAP.
Even then it’s been difficult because generally, our store bought tanks are no more than usually about 30/40 gallons which in the US/Canada is considered small but in other countries they are pretty big tanks. But it can be done provided you do your research and bare in mind that if later on, you need to upgrade to bigger tanks, you are able to buy them relatively easily. 😎 Unlike me who is now saving like mad because I need to have my new goldfish aquarium tank especially made because it’s proving really difficult to buy the tank size that I need and being quoted £500 for a 300L/75 gallon tank. (Including the cabinet to house it on.) 😕
I like 10 gal tanks for some quarantine and new little ones. Very easy to maintain.
Yall gotta go watch this video where Flip aquatics visits for a room tour and they get to the 55g. Lol
Even people with larger tanks should have at least a few empty cycled tanks for time outs(cichlids), hospital tanks, small fish grow outs or that deal that was too good to pass up at the LFS. Think I'm gonna make a rack of 10-15 10 gallons for those reasons.
Happy New Year to you & the family Jason ...
Happy New Year!
Great video!!
Thank you!
Very nice video ,I have a couple tens quarantine, grow out and a pea puffer tank.Heading to a LFS for a New Years Day party so who knows.l had asked about breeding based super reds on color think I am at a point where I need to get a little genes.Do you think a long fin super red pleco would be the way to go?My thinking is might pickup the long fin gene and the most distant red bushy nose pleco.
I personally like the long fin versions for BN plecos, but some people don't. I think with the super reds you can't go wrong either way.
never had a 10 gallon that was worth it, need at least a 20 gallon
These videos are always a pleasure to watch!! Keep it up guys!!
Appreciate you watching!
10 gallon tanks are awesome; can do a fun aquascape and there is a large variety of nano fish that you can stock it with... Small but not too small. If I had to only have one tank I'd pick a bigger one, but if I could have as many tanks as I could manage but all the same size they would be 10 gallon aquariums
Good points!
I got snails for sale ❤
You look like Thanos off of The avengers end game
Great ideas....Happy New Year dude....
Happy New Year!
The best salt water tank I ever had was a ten gal. Seriously!
That's interesting because you always hear larger tanks are easier to maintain water parameters than smaller ones on the salt water side.
I was looking at getting a 10g tank set up as a beginner and noticed your beginner videos in the description are no longer available. Is there an updated video?
Yes! This is the first video: ua-cam.com/video/W_mD6P_UPfA/v-deo.html
Great video. I didn't like 10s for a long time but now they are playing an important role in my fishroom
They tend to do that - all the sudden it's like - where did all these tens come from! Haha
The $1 per gallon sale is going on now at Petco, a heads up for those that suffer from multiple tank syndrome.
Thanks for letting us know.
Love what you do
Thank you!
That was my first one, cool vid J.
Yes I'm with you I use a tank about this size to quarantine all my new fish and to grow on any fry. Happy new year to you and your family 🥳🎉🍾🐟👍
Happy New Year!
10 gallon is great for guppies and a couple mystery snails. I’ve had fun with aquascaping it, just remember to do water changes (mystery snails poop a lot, that = ammonia). Mystery snails also create a ton of babies, be prepared to trade/give them to a fish shop or share with friends!
Ya, they are exploding all over the fish room. : -)
Prime Time Aquatics 🤣🤣🤣 Gotta stop playing Barry White in the fish room!
I have a 10-gallon quarantine tank running right now and five 10-gallon lizard tanks (4 Leopard Geckos and 1 African Fat-tailed Gecko).
I think a 10 gallon tank is the best beginner size because of how popular plants have become. Keeps all the costs down
Jason, I just wanted to say I've been watching your videos for a long time and you've really helped me get into cichlids and how to keep them. Thank you. Also, do you by chance live in the Chicago area? I know you say you have hard water and I'm from the area and have about the same parameters. Just curious lol.
Thank you! Yes, our water is hard with a high pH.
Gotta love that IL and IN liquid rock.
I've been staring at an empty 10g for 2 years. Never been filled. I feel my life is unfulfilled yet unfettered. I haven't killed anything in years
Time to get it up and running! : -)
I just filled the back with Val and put 12 Zebra Danios. It looks great.
10 gallon tanks are great for smaller species, i have 2 10 gallon set up at the moment, one is for guppy fry and the other is for Celetial Pearl Danios. Its the perfect size tank that doesnt take up much room!
20 long are the best small tank in my opinion. I have 10gals though for baby cichlids
Looking for one for my daughters room
Hope she enjoys it!
Its quarantine and I have a spare 10 gallon so I set it up added live plants floating plants from my bigger tank decor and substraught then was like what am I going to put in here I didnt even think what I was going to do with it I was bored and set it up so time to get fish I guess
Have a 10 gal on my little sister's desk, filled will guppies and a gold mystery snail, named Goldmember.
feels good to be the 666 person to like this video
I agree. I’ve owned a couple different size tanks over many years. In my opinion and generally speaking, the larger the tank, the easier it is to maintain water quality. Longer tanks are generally better than taller tanks too.
Of course the type of environment you want to create will influence tank design/shape. I’ve had a 75g set up for a while, live plants, 6 Angels, schools of tetras, etc., it’s a cool tank. Then I saw a 110g with tall roots and sticks from bottom to surface, some moss and 8 discus and a large school of neon tetras. The two tanks share the same foot print (4’x18”), but the 110g is about 10” taller. A great tank for a tall, thin bodies of discus (or Angels) 😉.
Both are such cool tanks!
Nice review, I find that a 10 gallon tank is very versatile 🤓
Thank you!
I totally disagree. I have a 100 gallon and it’s easier to maintain than a 10 gallon. Water changes less often and don’t have to worry so much about the declorinators and temps when changing water and temperatures while adding. Is a lot more leeway on bigger tanks for time constraints
I agree - water parameters are easier to manage the larger a tank is, but it still takes longer to do maintenance on a larger tank relative to a smaller tank.
I'm guessing discussion of 20-gal. tanks are next...?
You never know. : -)
My male betta and Pleco (yes, I have tanks to upgrade her to) loved the ten. Then the betta died due to the freaking filter and the pleco ate his body.
So now I just have a pleco.
Sorry to hear about your betta. Our plecos are the same - when smaller fish die we rarely see any remains.
Thnx Jason. Perfect. Your vids r my encyclopedia for refence as well as being so entertaining
Thank you very much!
Happy new year 🥳🐟. Another great and informative video to start the year!!! But then again you have been putting awesome videos out for years!!! Thanks!!!
Thank you!
@Prime Time Aquatics, how many 3 1/2 in male peacock cichlids could I put in a ten gallon tank for quarantine purposes for 2 weeks? Or should I not try it at all?
The size isn't an issue, but the fact that they are all males might cause you some issues. If I were going to QT male peacocks I might give them their own 10 gallons if possible.
@Prime Time Aquatics, What would be the smallest tank size would you recommend to QT say 10-15 male peacock cichlids in the event that I had an ick outbreak? I am asking for the smallest because it would be less meds and less water to change. Also what would the smallest tank size for QT for say 5 peacocks when getting new ones?
what about bunch of 10 galons for breeding purposes ?
Absolutely!
I have a few 10s, they’re good for bettas as well as growing fry, quarantine, etc
They sure are!
just got my 80 gallon. do you think i need a extern filter. happy new year to the family and you btw!
Depends on how you plan to stock it. With average stocking I would feel comfortable with something like a penguin 375 HOB (or something similar).
How many inches is your tanks the
length width and height??
Most of mine are around 20 x 10.5 x 12.5
Been in the hobby for over 50 years. Cant remember a time when I didnt have at least one 10 gallon.
Me too. : -)
What happens if we have a tank that is just starting and I been having it for 3 days not and I have 5 crawfish in it and it’s a 10 gallon and I put an beneficial bacteria tablet in it and now I have an bacteria bloom and it happend over night. Do I need to change my filter or just let it cycle for a little bit longer
Depends on if the tablet you added contained live nitrifying bacteria. If it did it may take a week or two to be fully cycled. If it didn't it can take 4-6 weeks.
@@PrimeTimeAquatics ok that is good to know. Thank you
Hi my delta tail betta have breathing problems what can i do i dont want him to die
Warrior 4christ , test the water for ammonia and nitrite. Do you have a cycled filter on your tank? If not, you will need to change water 100% daily to avoid poisoning. Prime water conditioner can help detoxify. First things first, change the water with a waster conditioner in it
Hello Jason. Do you have any tip how to fix green hair algae ?
I have found a few things that work - fast growing live plants like hornwort, which competes with the green hair algae for nutrients, adjusting light duration (I'm at about 9hrs a day split between morning and evening), cutting back on liquid ferts if you are using them, sometimes mollies, guppies, flag fish, siamese algae eaters are good fish to eat it (as well as a lot of Lake Malawi cichlids, but they don't work in a community tank). I've also found in our water green hair algae grows quickly when we first set up a tank, but then seems to level off and actually die back after a while.
What size tank is the one that's directly behind you, in the center there? Looks like a long but the extra width is throwing my guess off.
SoggyFries that is a 50 gallon low boy made by Zoomed. Love them!
@@PrimeTimeAquatics looks freakin sweet. Grabs my attention everytime I watch your vids.
We use our 10 gallon as a hospital tank/breeding tank for smaller fish.
They are very versatile!
@@PrimeTimeAquatics I highly agree. Mine is currently being used for my daughter's tetra fry that were born on 12/30/2019. Otherwise I use it as either a quarantine or hospital. Mostly quarantine.
Random question: I would like to start a tropical tank one day, in my research I see information on breeding, but I dont want any breeding. How can I prevent this?
Great question - in a mixed community tank most fish fry don't survive because they are eaten by other fish so it tends not to be a huge deal.
Thank you for responding!
I know this is an old question, but wanted to add ... not all fishkeepers are happy to see their fish breed and the babies get eaten! If that's you, then just choose your fish accordingly. You can have a great tank with all male guppies and no females (Or vice versa, but female guppies can store sperm so there's no guarantee there'll be no babies, if they were ever in a mixed tank). You can have one sunset honey gourami as a centrepiece fish (or insert your fancy fish of choice) rather than a breeding pair. You can choose fish whose eggs need brackish water to hatch, or fish that really need a spawning mop or cave to reproduce (and don't provide them with anything resembling one). Etc.
Always good info! Happy New Year!!
Happy New Year Sharron!
Thanks Jason
Could I do a male betta with a school of neon tetras in a 10g?
I think so. :-)
@@PrimeTimeAquatics ok, thanks! i love your videos so much and I wanna start a small tank!!!!! :)
Great tank for a shrimp colony.
It sure can be!
What is the Orange fish at 1:34 ?
Fish Keeper those are Eureka Red Cichlids.
👍
Happy New Year. 🥂
You too!
Beginner☹️🙋♂️
Thanks for being here!
I usually suggest newbies start with a 20-long, just because the water is more stable and you can have a better variety of fish. 10gs are a good choice, too, particularly for shrimp, a single betta, or a small school of nano-fish.
LOVE 20 longs - they are very versatile.
