Renaud really is something else. I heard him speak at a perfume conference in Dec. 2022 when he introduced us to Guidance before it was officially released. He talked about the inspiration for recent Amouage creations. I was astounded when his answer included references to history and mythology as well as moods he wanted to evoke. The talk reminded me that perfumery is science, art, economics, business, history, and it has a psychological impact. It’s always lovely to meet a thinker/creator. Glad you did this interview, Marcelo.
You nailed it Vivian🧡 It's all of the above and I feel that Renaud embodies all of this. He really is searching for creativity in all the work he's doing at Amouage but also understands the importance of making the fragrance desirable (as a product)....and then knowing that it's a brand that is steeped in history already (like I mentioned in this episode, he has a tough job) It was such a pleasure to connect with him and hoping that our paths can cross again🙏🏽💫

Superb and top notch production, editing and interview, Marcelo! I have HUGE respect for Renaud and the brand Amouage. I still have to find my own Amouage (for a full bottle) and so far all that I have tested have been special and striking. I am taking my time and sometimes I feel that I may be saving it for when I finally visit Oman someday 🇴🇲 ( my best friend and her family lives there).
How special will it be to buy 'the Amouage' in Oman ♥️ From what I've seen in photo's the actual facility that creates the perfumes also has a retail space...one day I need to be there too! Another wonderful video, Marcelo! Striking in that you had only a 20-minute timeframe with Renaud. This was, however, a somewhat difficult interview for me (a longtime chemist and budding fraghead) to rationalize since Renaud isn’t really a perfumer but, rather, the creative director at the archetypal Middle Eastern fragrance house of Amouage. Maybe I don’t quite understand the role of a creative director. He’s obviously a very smart guy with the way he’s broadening and re-building post-Covid lockdown supply chains including Oman frankincense, and also the way he recommends wearing both alcohol- (that is, Western) and oil-based (that is, Middle Eastern) fragrances. And despite his comparatively short tenure at Amouage, if he had anything at all to do with Black Iris then I’ve got to give him some measure of credibility. Lastly, your querying fragrance industry insiders on movie characters allows them to call out their favorite or maybe best-selling fragrances, which can be both insightful and fun!

Yes, professionally done video. Again, something rare in the mids of fragrance channels. But regarding Amouage house, unfortunately, in my opinion ( and I am not alone ) it is not what it use to be anymore.
Great to hear from you Marcel and appreciate the words of encouragement on this production...it was fun working to bring this to life in a unique way (essentially it's a one camera shot of an interview.....so grateful to my team for helping me bring this to life in an engaging way 🙏🏽) In regards to your comments about Amouage. I came to this interviewing knowing this sentiment. Prior to arriving in Cannes, Kevin and I were wrapping up the France Fragrance Tour 2023 in Grasse and at the closing dinner with everyone (a room of 12 passionate perfume lovers from around the world) I mentioned that I was planning to reach out to Renaud (as I heard that he was going to be in Cannes) and asked this room full of perfume lovers that if I had the chance to meet Renaud what questions should I ask him. Oh the innocence of that question! What occurred next was intense! A great amount of discourse began around this dinner table! 2 camps were formed and both camps were prepared to take this to the death!😳 This was great for me, as I could see what the concerns were and was able to formulate some questions and direction on where I wanted to take the conversation should the occasion arise💫 Having met Renaud, I can say that he is unequivocally passionate about the art of perfumery, about moving Amouage forward and through what has now become a very crowded niche field and to create a genuine supply chain for some unique raw ingredients that exist within Oman. Prior to meeting Renaud, I knew of his passion for revisiting the roots of perfumery within Oman and of his work at Wadi Dawkah and Frankincense (which is so deeply connected to Amouage). Nice interview, especially for an impromptu ‘go, you have 20 minutes’ 😂. It is interesting to see a bit of his vision. When he is talking (paraphrasing here) about the challenge to both keep up quality and attracting a larger audience, I’m still on the fence. It is not that recent additions are bad, but I feel that most of them have been “dumbed down”. Not bad, au contraire mon frère, just decent. Maybe I like scents that need five wearings to wrap your head around way more than what the masses prefer. It’s hard to cater both audiences in that scenario. That is why I am on the fence, but maybe he will be able to surprise us.

Loved reading your comments and yes, I do remember the passionate conversation that we all had together over dinner in Grasse😂 Personally I'm finding that the balance is already there between fragrances that you need 5 wears to appreciate and then the instant love ones. Out of interest have you tried Royal Tobacco or Purpose? Both are powerful, potent fragrances that upon multiple wears reveal more of themselves. I would even place Guidance in that 'slow reveal' category; even though this one is an instant love upon first spray. I've discovered that Guidance is so nuanced and extraordinary...in love with this one🧡 Thank you mate for jumping into the conversation and sharing! Greatly appreciated homie👊🏽

In the Odyssey collection I think Enclave is the most interesting of the four (and I did pull that trigger). Are we that spoiled with ‘vintage’ jewels like Myths, Figment and Imitation? It is a high bar, balanced on that same fence 😉
Should have asked him why he’s gone the money route and not stick to being artistic , known for its oils and incense .The founder would be rolling in his grave

Yes, some of the recent release's have a broader appeal, but these are balanced with some more complex and challenging fragrance's. Plus I feel with the work that Amouage is doing in the Frankincense field of Wadi Dawkah is going deeper into the celebration of this key fragrance note that not only defines the region but also a lot of the Amouage fragrances. Have you had the chance to test out Purpose and Search....for me, both of these are a great celebration of Frankincense. Thanks again Matt; always appreciate your input
What an honour to have an interview with the man that basically butchered Amouage as a brand? wtf... it's clear that most of you are not Amouage true fans, this dude is basically turning Amouage into Parfums de marley... what did he do after he arrived? reformulated everything from Chong's era, changed the bottle design..just,why??? changed the packaging for all fragrances...just...why?? then all of his new releases are just uninspired and boring, not at all worthy of Amouage name. Stop praising this dude

Yes, professionally done video. Again, something rare in the mids of fragrance channels. But regarding Amouage house, unfortunately, in my opinion ( and I am not alone ) it is not what it use to be anymore.

In regards to your comments about Amouage. I came to this interviewing knowing this sentiment.
Prior to arriving in Cannes, Kevin and I were wrapping up the France Fragrance Tour 2023 in Grasse and at the closing dinner with everyone (a room of 12 passionate perfume lovers from around the world) I mentioned that I was planning to reach out to Renaud (as I heard that he was going to be in Cannes) and asked this room full of perfume lovers that if I had the chance to meet Renaud what questions should I ask him.
Oh the innocence of that question!
What occurred next was intense! A great amount of discourse began around this dinner table! 2 camps were formed and both camps were prepared to take this to the death!😳
This was great for me, as I could see what the concerns were and was able to formulate some questions and direction on where I wanted to take the conversation should the occasion arise💫
Having met Renaud, I can say that he is unequivocally passionate about the art of perfumery, about moving Amouage forward and through what has now become a very crowded niche field and to create a genuine supply chain for some unique raw ingredients that exist within Oman.
Prior to meeting Renaud, I knew of his passion for revisiting the roots of perfumery within Oman and of his work at Wadi Dawkah and Frankincense (which is so deeply connected to Amouage). Nice interview, especially for an impromptu ‘go, you have 20 minutes’ 😂. It is interesting to see a bit of his vision. When he is talking (paraphrasing here) about the challenge to both keep up quality and attracting a larger audience, I’m still on the fence. It is not that recent additions are bad, but I feel that most of them have been “dumbed down”. Not bad, au contraire mon frère, just decent. Maybe I like scents that need five wearings to wrap your head around way more than what the masses prefer. It’s hard to cater both audiences in that scenario. That is why I am on the fence, but maybe he will be able to surprise us.

Personally I'm finding that the balance is already there between fragrances that you need 5 wears to appreciate and then the instant love ones.
Out of interest have you tried Royal Tobacco or Purpose? Both are powerful, potent fragrances that upon multiple wears reveal more of themselves.
I would even place Guidance in that 'slow reveal' category; even though this one is an instant love upon first spray. I've discovered that Guidance is so nuanced and extraordinary...in love with this one🧡

@@TheNicheFragranceCollector I do agree with Royal Tobacco being better than just decent, however I did not pull the trigger on a bottle. In the Odyssey collection I think Enclave is the most interesting of the four (and I did pull that trigger). Are we that spoiled with ‘vintage’ jewels like Myths, Figment and Imitation? It is a high bar, balanced on that same fence 😉

I actually think that the creativity at Amouage is pretty high. Yes, some of the recent release's have a broader appeal, but these are balanced with some more complex and challenging fragrance's.
Plus I feel with the work that Amouage is doing in the Frankincense field of Wadi Dawkah is going deeper into the celebration of this key fragrance note that not only defines the region but also a lot of the Amouage fragrances.
Have you had the chance to test out Purpose and Search....for me, both of these are a great celebration of Frankincense.

What an honour to have an interview with the man that basically butchered Amouage as a brand? wtf... it's clear that most of you are not Amouage true fans, this dude is basically turning Amouage into Parfums de marley... what did he do after he arrived? reformulated everything from Chong's era, changed the bottle design..just,why??? changed the packaging for all fragrances...just...why?? then all of his new releases are just uninspired and boring, not at all worthy of Amouage name. Stop praising this dude

It killed the Amouage brand, unfortunately. Not to mention that he discontinued my favorite perfumes: Sunshine Man, Bracken Man, Myths..😡😡Christopher Chong deserves a statue for his major contribution to the Amouage brand.
