The fact that Top Gear is scripted isn't a problem. It's the fact that they pretend like it's not. They can't act and it shows. Top gear wasn't about cars. It's was about three mates having fun and doing stupid things. Clarkson saying anything to outrageous the politically correct. Cars were only props.
Most banter on TV is scripted or highly edited. QI films for 3 hours to get 45 minutes and the panelists know what they are going to talk about ahead of time to plan jokes if they want to. Alan doesn't though.
As much as I love Lee Mack, I think his argument falls down a bit when he mentioned he owns a classic Triumph. If he really didn't care for cars as much as he claims, he wouldn't have gone to the lengths to acquire and maintain a vehicle like that.
The beauty of Top Gear is that you don't have to like cars to enjoy it. It's just three arseholes being funny and doing entertainingly silly car-based challenges. What's not to like?
That part of it is fun and relatable. It's the way that they review insanely expensive, unobtainable cars that is out of touch and on that front I'm mostly on board with Lee here. I don't know that there's a lot about the way they talk about various Porsches and MacLarens and Bugatti Veyrons that translates very well to my ownership of a VW Jetta. Granted, those cars are still VERY cool and impressive, but it does make the show feel a little targeted for a wealthy upper class.
Honestly would you be more interested if they did Skoda reviews instead? That's the whole point, they make expensive cars accessible to the public, cars you probably would never see in real life anyway. Thats's like saying i hate astronomy because i can't visit every star. Think for a moment please.
Jeremy Clarkson is a manchild, James may is slow, Richard Hammond is short, political correctness is stupid, caravans are shit, speeding is cool, other countries are different to England. There, that's every low hanging Top Gear 'joke' ever.
I've never watched Top Gear for the challenges, it's always been to see reviews of the more futuristic vehicles (I still want that quad bike that turns into a jet ski)
Top gear is an entertaining comedic show that is wrapped together with a loss theme of cars. Personally I like cars but wouldn’t watch it without the humorous trio and their drastically different personalities

they were always incidental, Clarkson had a running joke that the producers wanted him to tell the viewers some car facts so that they knew what their tax money was being spent on. Anyone who liked the OG Top Gear has The Grand Tour which makes bringing up complaints about the new TG completely redundant.

Grey... because you only own own of those for the look of it, but he isn't interested in the mechanical side of it like James may!
I just had regular interest in cars before I started watching Top Gear, but now cars make up a big part of my life. And I noticed that Lee who said he had little interest in cars , mentioned the year , make and model of his car in full, with a certain amount of pride. No interest in cars?
That was the joke, he does that all the time, seriously what he means is he has no interest in the mechanics, like James may, he just likes the look, there isn't really another reason for owning a classic car
I thought the AIRS was made up and put on the end as a joke but no, it distinguishes his TR4 from the ones that didn’t have independent rear suspension. 😂
Don't ask Jeremy Clarkson for a free car, because it might upset him? He does his best work when he's upset. That's like giving Lee Mack a barely believable statement on your panel show, and not expecting him to explain it, on the spot.
I recently returned to driving after 5 years. Traffic jams, red lights, tailgaters, bikers who come from nowhere, overtaking then slowing on motorways. I sold the car, and have gone back to public transport and taxis.
I enjoyed top gear. Being a automobile enthusiasts they covered auto's that I wouldn't have any chance of driving, the chemistry between all three is also a big part of the show.

I love Top Gear. I have to say, I was not interested in cars before I saw it, but now I sort of am. Not mechanics, but cars in general. That's how good I think it is. It's just about fun, much more than cars, I think. I mean, they don't talk about cars that much anymore, all that stuff Lee said about torque and suspension stuff, they don't insist on that, do they? They're not those bores you overhear in pubs going on and on about how many MPGs their fucking Jag can do, and how much torque it develops... I love the challenges, the humour, the Stig, the three guys' dynamic, and even a few of the cars they've shown, but I don't care for cars as a subject.
I personally love cars and loved top gear when it was these 3, hence I don’t love top gear anymore but I love the grand tour I think Lee has missed the point, I don’t have anything against him but saying you hate a show because it’s about something that doesn’t interest you is unfair, I don’t care about the kardashians, so I don’t watch keeping up with the kardashians, he doesn’t like cars clearly, so why would he 1) bother watching it, and 2) go on a show to speak about his disliking of the show, I agree with the host, even if you don’t like cars, it’s entertainment, because I agree, you can’t watch it to objectively gain a better understanding of cars, it’s Jeremy shouting about speed and power and sliding around the track in a cloud of smoke, as someone that has been into cars since I was 5 years old, top gear was actually one of the primary influences, but I would buy the top gear magazines as they had a section at the back where you could check out more of the statistics of the cars, like insurance groups and tax etc, I know that sounds boring but that’s how in depth I was, I could go out somewhere with my dad, he could point at a car and I could list different things about it

Not really, just because some bloke called Lee doesn't like Top Gear doesn't mean he is right.
Veggie Gamer I have thought this forever about this show
Top gear wasn't about cars. It's was about three mates having fun and doing stupid things. Clarkson saying anything to outrageous the politically correct. Cars were only props.
All the banter was incredibly scripted.
so it was chucklevision
It was about cars until they rebooted it at the beginning of the 00's
clarkson was the hard bully mate may the chilled mate who occasionally would be bullied and the small one
If he really didn't care for cars as much as he claims, he wouldn't have gone to the lengths to acquire and maintain a vehicle like that.
it was so funny
Who cares its a a comedy show.
I never claimed that they were high-brow.
Because I meet enough arseholes in the course of a normal day and don't wanna spend my evenings watching three more?
If people watched Top Gear for the cars, it'd still be just as popular as ever.
Ruby Wax, as usual, barely able to keep her mouth shut, even when it's someone else's turn.
Loose theme on cars? Must be blind. Country file has a loose theme on vehicles, sometimes they are parked in shot.
I'll admit to knowing nothing about cars but loving the old top gear
"I'm not talking about your heavy drinking days Ruby.." brutal. I quite like Ruby, but @ 0.52 that is a face of someone who has been slayed. Lesson; don't interrupt the Mack.
Didn’t he go on Top Gear just the other year tho to promote his new sitcom tho?
You've gotta remember that Lee Mack is a comedian and they usually take the piss. Anyway its an opinion that doesn't mean its right.
To be fair he mentioned not liking car programs and most people watch top gear for the mischief the presenters get up to.
@@westhawk7259 Yeah you would be mad to try and learn something from it
Tho that's promotion tho.
I love Ruby so much, she`s the only comedienne who can literally make me cry with laughter. God bless you Ruby
I really like top gear but it's because it's not really about the cars, it's about them guys arguing and pranking each other.
Gotta love the sheep in the audience constantly clapping and cheering
Yeah, how dare they agree with a comedian and find him funny
And booing
Yeah how dare they agree with him, it makes me FEEL BAD😭
Lee doesn't like Ruby, he has to be the loudest person in the room, she's his nemesis.
top gear now is crapper than top gear then. Then it was Clarkson creaming his pants over the latest Ferrari. Now it's just a gang of lads pissing about in cars. the cars are just incidental.
they were always incidental, Clarkson had a running joke that the producers wanted him to tell the viewers some car facts so that they knew what their tax money was being spent on. Anyone who liked the OG Top Gear has The Grand Tour which makes bringing up complaints about the new TG completely redundant.
I love Lee and I love Top Gear so this is really interesting to watch, I do understand where he's coming from but Top Gear is just hilarious
Every word is scripted
Lee is an unfunny clown
I bet the Would I Lie to You episode with Hammond was a bit awkward...
Thomas Wilcox depending on the date of recording, he may not remember. 😈
Lee appeared on top gear last night and they also specifically asked him about this. Joked his way out of it nicely though
What an arsehole he is then.
Jaguar is the name of a large cat from Central America.
Hence, Jag u er is the British pronunciation of a Central American word. Ergo, Jag u er is incorrect.
But wasn't the actual animal named by British explorers/taxonomists ?
I've seen Lee in a few pictures wearing what looks like a luxury watch. Does he care how that works? Would a 20 quid Casio not have done?
I love Top Gear but I can fully understand why people hate it! To each their own =)
Serbian warlord Ratko Mladic has really let himself go.
Ethnic cleansing is known to be a bit on the stressful side.
03:20 the wideshot of those three makes it look like Clarkson, May, Hammond from left to right
Says the whole world finds cars boring then goes on to talk about how much he loves old 60's cars, kinda killed his whole argument right there
A typical lefty arse , they re all the same ,they talk crap
That's the joke that he's contradicting himself
Now,
I Love What Lee Does,
And i Was Expecting a More Convincing Argument,
Then It All Went To Shit At The, (1:50) Mark When Lee Unashamedly Admitted To Driving a :
1966 Triumph TR4A IRS - But That's Not The Point !!!!!!!
Well Yes Lee, That Is The Point My Friend . . . . : 0 )
It was the joke you dude (he does it on wilty often), juxtaposing what he said with the fact that he owns a classic car - that's why he spelled out the full name, whereas Skinner just said: ... Grey... because you only own own of those for the look of it, but he isn't interested in the mechanical side of it like James may!
@@kurtsudheim825 No . . . He Is Funny Normally, This Wasn't . . . : 0 (
I just had regular interest in cars before I started watching Top Gear, but now cars make up a big part of my life.
First paragraph, I thought, this is Superman getting down with the humans.
Turns out it was just Viz TopTips.
Something tells me he just said that to be controversial. Especially as he says nobody is interested in cars.
I enjoyed top gear. Being a automobile enthusiasts they covered auto's that I wouldn't have any chance of driving, the chemistry between all three is also a big part of the show.
Yeah, smug tossers tend to get on with each other
Lee Mack is letting the jealousy eat him alive.
And he was just on Top Gear.
People don't watch Top Gear for the cars, they watched it for James, Richard, Jeremy.
In my 24 years of watching all sorts of american media, actors, hosts, people from USA, i must say that this woman *by FAR* has an accent that is so annoyingly american that i cannot take it.
No way. I watched ESPN for about 5 minutes and that easily tops it. She's quite funny.
Wasn't Lee Mack once the Star in a Reasonably Priced Car on Top Gear? If he puts the show into room 101 and he appeared on the show, doesn't he go into room 101 by default?!
I'm not in to the middle aged man, scripted humour but I do love the camera work on top gear, really amazing shots.
Absolutely agree with you, the camera work and production on Top Gear was stunning and worthy of awards. I believe the talent behind this moved on to work with Clarkson on The Grand Tour, and you can see the same amazing camera work there.
tjf4375 will have to have a look cheers
keenodribbles
You won't be disappointed - it's basically the Top Gear we know and love, but with tons more budget thrown in!
i really don't rate the Grand Tour, the scripted humour has become far more obvious and Americanised. They get to use nicer cars etc. but the old top gear was far better, its become like a sitcom now
keenodribbles I dont think anyone used to watch Top Gear because of middle aged men.Thats like saying 'I like Watching superhero films because I like men in tights' and I say "Used to" because no one watches the current Top gear anymore.Though Grand Tour on the other hand is everything Top gear used to be but better
Then he went to guest in Top Gear oh the irony.
He owns a vintage classic car.... ruins the whole "I find it boring" narrative.
Lee Macks a typical lefty tosser - a man who doesnt like cars ,then says that about Top Gear n then says i ve got a classic .he s an idiot and he just doesnt like J Clarkeson .the audience was cheering him ,theyre prob hand picked with lefty leanings .skinners a lefty too.
Why has it become impossible in the UK to have an opinion about something totally irrelevant to politics & not be a lefty or a righty?!
No more hypocritical that the audience enthusiastically clapping at that statement, I guarantee the majority chose their cars based on them not being boring!
Ive got a child , but i find one born every minute and nanny programmes boring , i was just wondering what your point is?
@@davidtomlinson6138 Never mind, not everybody who can think and express complex ideas is a lefty - just most of them. Shame about your childish envy.
Three men wallowing in their midlife crisis.
I love cars, I am a petrol head, which is the reason why I hate Top Gear. About 6-7 years ago the show was actually good, funny, entertaining, informative and about cars. Now it is just complete predictable bollocks which isn't funny and isn't about anything remotely interesting
RyanGiggsOBE i thought the quad bike that turns into a jetski was kinda cool......just sayin
***** Not really. It used to be then it went way to predictable and completely fake. I had decent moments but 80% of the time is was horrendously unfunny
You're not a petrol head then. I bet you don't even watch F1. Go away poser.
Hjembrent Kent I'm not a petrol head because I don't like a show which has nothing to cars anymore and just bad humour. Also I bet you dont watch BTCC so your a poser. Same logic
RyanGiggsOBE I agree, and i do watch BTCC poser
Top Gear used to be about boring reviews mentioning how many cupholders a car had.
Then they realized they could make a comedy show of sorts where they just fuck about and they all became millionaires.
Lee ended up going on Top Gear 😂
Cars are not boring. they are amazing. but that said. everyone deserves their own opinion.
It’s passed 3:29 min and i’m not starting to laught yet. What an incredible show.
He finds cars boring but has a car collection?
But I love Top Gear 😭
I don't even like cars, I just like the trio
RIP Dave Myers x
I quite like watching Top Gear every now and then, but at the same time people who think it's the best thing on TV, and who think that Jeremy Clarkson is the funniest man on the planet who "says it like it is" are, without exception, the most tedious people in human history.
To be fair as a petrol head I have to admit most performance specs are completely pointless for driving on the road.
YES i KNEW I LOVED YOU FOR A REASON LEE MACK
Fuck you
Fuck you too :)
Super Smoph Thankyou! How nice
Hey a hipster who uses caps lock lmao, i thought all you guys wanted was to appear intelligent, with you glasses and snooty, slightly bitter attitudes.
The glasses are prescription. And yes you're right me declaring my love for Lee Mack is very snooty and bitter. Hope you find your ass since you laughed it off writing your thuper duper intelligent comment.
People in the comments logic "I like Lee Mack..I like Top Gear..Lee Mack doesn't like Top Gear..I don't like Lee Mack anymore.." Mongs.
If I want to see and hear something usefull about cars i switch to “Harry’s Garage” on youtube. That’s a proper car program.
love his channel, lee is such a bore here.
Couldn’t agree more with you Lee 👏🏻
Watching actual comedians shit on top gear is one of my new favourite hobbies.
Look up Stewart Lee's routine on Top Gear.
@@urmumsbapshe’s not even a real hamster
Some top gear numbers/facts can be useful in real life. Torque can be handy when you're on a motorway for example.
_And what purpose does torque have on a motorway? Nothing. You're cruising at a constant speed half of the time, so what's the point of knowing about torque?_
Well I like cars and do not find them boring... So he's not talking on my behalf.
Ellis01234567890 Top Gear was the single most watched program in the world at its peak. So I'm thinking you're not alone. :)
50% of the population is under 100 IQ. All you need to know about Top Gears popularity.
The irony in you insinuating, by spamming the YT comment section, that half of the worlds population are stupid simply due to the fact that they like a show you don't is truly astounding.
RisingTied72 you may have missed a couple of things there. A) The only true statement in my little syllogism there is the 50% thing. I don't mind Top Gear. It was using the 'argument from popularity' fallacy to imply a correlation with the percentage of people who comprise the 'under 100' median, which is an ill defined median indeed. Now, go look up 'irony'.
...I'm experimenting with just explaining trolling.
Lee Mack had to say it was an IRS version of the TR4. If that isn't car nerdy I don't know what is 🤣
lee mack went on this series of top gear hahahahh
Its better than your program not going out !
I watched a Top Gear episode once. It was three middle-aged white blokes telling dad jokes in Vietnam. I didn’t get it.
THEN I saw another episode. It was three middle-aged white blokes telling dad jokes... in the US. I didn’t get it.
If you love this show then great, but I think it’s fucking boring as fucking fuck.
This is what you call good three way banter. Lovely stuff:)
They are really fun and funny blokes, as it happens the cars in Top Gear are accessories to the fun, that's pretty much it.
It's really a combo of these reasons for me also, plus the general pompous blowhardery.
He must of forgot how much he hated it when later he appeared on it talking about his. Car collection
And his appearance was quite awkward and not the most comfortable for some reason.
Frank: What do you drive, then?
Lee: As it happens, I drive a 1966 Triumph TR4A IRS....but that's not the point...(audience laughing) It's not the point, is it, because -
Frank (incredulous): That's not true, is it?
Lee: No, it is, yeah.
LOL
I love lee but you’ve got to understand Top Gear is comedy first, then facts not the other way, go figure
Then how come it has never made me laugh in my entire life??
@@MrCostaC because it's subjective. Like most things on TV. Don't watch it, it's pretty simple
The thing I would put in room 101 would be people who brag about their holidays at dinner parties to people who haven’t been on holiday and can’t afford it
I’m gonna have to say I now dislike Lee Mack now, I would like to see him do a better show than the “proper top gear trio”
You seem a bit sensitive if this has made you actually dislike him.
@@johnmartinez7440 I don’t really think that’s sensitive, it’s as valid a reason as any when you see somebody acting a different way to how they normal do. If you didn’t find this funny and just a bit awkward and preachy like many did then it’s valid
really disappointed t find out 'top gear' wasn't a programme about quality drugs
I get his point but I love top gear and no one watches it for the information about the cars. It's just for the trio
Not sure why you wouldn't have shown if top gear was put in to room 101 or not for Lee Mack.
Anyone know if it went in or not?
Well, judging by the dislikes, a few people were quite butthurt haha XD
I love Lee Mack and Top Gear (though I havent seen recent series that some people claim have become less good), but TG is NOT the best show on telly, that's QI, even Clarkson said that once :D
I don't know, Lee Mack seems really boring. Attacking at random because that's the only way he knows how to contribute to anything.
Hjembrent Kent
If you think Lee Mack is boring, you need to watch more Would I Lie to You?
daysofgreenday65 He is quite boring yes, he's uncontroversial, posh, snooty, self important etc. All very bad traits when you try to pass yourself off as a comedian
“Everyone in the world thinks cars are boring”
> Is the most widely watched factual television programme in the world...
"factual" lol :) It was primarily a comedy program and all the better for it. The factual presentation about handling and steering feel (and indeed practicality and safety and fuel economy and what not) moved over with the other presenters to the Fifth Gear program for the most part.
He's a comedian making jokes.
I went in expecting to be upset, but I agree. Cars are really boring. A few stand out, like the Toyota Hillux that couldn't be destroyed, or the Spyker C8 that I adore the aesthetic of, but when they sit down and talk about a new sportscar or whatever I switch off a bit (not all the way, cos I know the three will give us some good material from it). I love the challenges, the humour, the Stig, the three guys' dynamic, and even a few of the cars they've shown, but I don't care for cars as a subject.
Top gear was basically last of the summer wine with cars.
I personally love cars and loved top gear when it was these 3, hence I don’t love top gear anymore but I love the grand tour
I think Lee has missed the point, I don’t have anything against him but saying you hate a show because it’s about something that doesn’t interest you is unfair, I don’t care about the kardashians, so I don’t watch keeping up with the kardashians, he doesn’t like cars clearly, so why would he 1) bother watching it, and 2) go on a show to speak about his disliking of the show, I agree with the host, even if you don’t like cars, it’s entertainment, because I agree, you can’t watch it to objectively gain a better understanding of cars, it’s Jeremy shouting about speed and power and sliding around the track in a cloud of smoke, as someone that has been into cars since I was 5 years old, top gear was actually one of the primary influences, but I would buy the top gear magazines as they had a section at the back where you could check out more of the statistics of the cars, like insurance groups and tax etc, I know that sounds boring but that’s how in depth I was, I could go out somewhere with my dad, he could point at a car and I could list different things about it
Lee Mack's a funny comedian tbf, but not as funny as top gear
where can I find the rest of this episode?
1983
Wasn't he on Top Gear though ?
I like classic cars, and very few modern cars, and im not a car nut at all, but it was one of the funniest shows ever.
