Small FYI: Jacques is pronounced "hawk-iz" not "Jake's".
We visited the School of the Prophets a few years ago and found out that the upper story, including that room, and been finished by my grandpa, Levi Ward Hancock. AND years ago while remodeling the fireplace (?) they found a layer of broken pipes. Pretty cool!

Not only does the Word of Wisdom protect us physically, but also spiritually, because as we follow its teachings, we are blessed by the Lord. I also believe that the Word of Wisdom is a test from God, so that we have a chance to prove our obedience to him and have the opportunity to improve and be worthy of the Spirit.

Wow! Thank you so much for making that connection between the children of Israel marking their doors as a preparation to entering the Lord's presence on Mount Sinai. The connection of that to us preparing ourselves by obeying the Word of Wisdom to enter his presence is pretty profound. I have never looked at it from that perspective before. Thank you for that insight.

One of the promises in section 89 are that the destroying angel will pass you by, so YES, living the word of wisdom can mean a long life on earth. I’ve been trying to focus on the DO’s of the word of wisdom - fresh fruit, veggies, wholesome herbs and grains. Meat sparingly but remembering it pleases God NOT to use animals unless famine, cold, excess hunger, etc. I have no idea why so many members justify eating so much meat and “use “ animals when it’s not needed. Those verses get missed (12 & 13, I think) a lot. Anyway, I’m passionate about this section and I just had to put in my 2 cents. Thanks for your videos. ❤️

I completely agree with you, “sparingly” is the key word their and it’s gets ignored. Loved your comment, I try too :-)

Thank you, for bringing up the overeating of meat! Eating - Only - in times of famine and excess of hunger - means just that. Though as a person with Extreme Food Allergies, caused by Celiac Disease. It is sad that - all of the Grains mentioned - are now GMO Grains. That are causing major health problems worldwide. Thankfully there are many healthy seeds, still left untainted :)

As a historical thought, meat spoilage and illness was not something well known. So by instructing them to eat in the winter, when cold meat stores. Or in famine, when there's no other choice. Now, we have ways to store meat safely, so it is less emphasized. We know what we should focus on in our days, by listening to the living prophet over the dead.

D&C 89 - Twice emphasizes Wholesome Herbs & every Herb (Vegetable) in it's season - then every Fruit in it's season. Which includes Tree Nuts, that are very high in protein and healthy fats. Before, mentioning other foods we can eat.
Where Meat - Creatures & Fowl are referred to as "Flesh". Before stating that they are to - Only - be Eaten During Cold, Famine & Excess Hunger. Which seems to be, when the above vegetables and fruits aren't readily available. And when our bodies, need more fat to stay warm.
If you go back to the Old Testament of The Bible, Animals Were Sacrificed for our Sins to be Forgiven. Which was a Big Deal in that.... Look Folks - This Sacrificial Animal Is Taking Your Place - For Your Sins to be Forgiven! In a Similitude of your Savior to come & Jesus Dying on the Cross for your Sins.
Though Meat was Also Eaten during Celebrations & Jewish Remembertive Feast Days. Where eating Meat, had Great Significance. (A Type of Sacrament?) So Eating Meat - wasn't so Lightly Thought About.
Where our Limiting Meat in our diets, seems to be more about - we are not supposed to kill animals - any more than needed. Since even in Adam and Eve's time - there have been many ways to preserve meat, for the coming winter. To include Air Drying, Smoking, and Salting the Meat.
And sometimes we forget, that Dairy and Eggs are other forms of protein and fat. That cause no loss of life, during normal circumstances.
Before D&C goes into the many Grains we can eat. Though now Tainted by GMO Strains of Grains. They still had Nutritional Value, and Protein.
Though all of the named Grains - didn't include all of the Multitude of Healthy Seeds. Many of which are Packed Full of Nutrition, Protein & Healthy Fats. To include Chia & Flax Seeds and Quinoa - to name a few. That Joseph Smith probably didn't have first hand experience of - at that time.
In conclusion, it still goes back too.... Be cautious of any animals life you participate in killing & it's Significance. That our Living Prophets, still Very Much Testify about - in Keeping The Word of Wisdom. Since it's even a question we are asked, when we get a Temple Recommend. In that.... Are you keeping The Word of Wisdom?

@@jennkesakuu I’ve heard this historical thought before and I respect people’s desire to use/eat meat after all is said and done. For me, I choose to only eat meat when needed and I also love to remember that in the millennium, no blood will be shed. I’m just getting a head start, I guess.

Our bodies are part of our temple. Our spirits and our bodies were made by God to be together as one but if we don’t keep both of these parts clean, we won’t have a temple to bring back to God. We keep the physical temple clean inside and outside. Then our spirits can learn there and grow towards Gods.

I have recently gone almost vegan. I choose to eat meat very sparingly and my reason for this change is based on the instruction given in D&C 89:12&13 and because we are the caretakers of all other animals on this earth. Not just land animals, but fish of the seas and fowls of the air. Go investigate commercial farming and experience the suffering of chickens in cages for weeks fed hormones, never seeing daylight. Farmed for their egg-laying. Cattle kept in cages, never seeing the daylight- farmed for their milk and meat. The only people who need cows milk- is their calves. The seas are being emptied of not only hundreds of thousands of fish, but the sideline casualties of dolphins, whales, sea horses and the list goes on. This commandment was not only for our bodies, but also for all living life on earth.
