- "Always Look on the Bright Side of Life" is Monty Python's hit song from the film Life of Brian.

Towards the end of the movie, the lead character Brian Cohen has been sentenced to death by crucifixion for his part in a kidnap plot. After a succession of apparent rescue opportunities all come to nothing, a character on a nearby cross -- played by Eric Idle, who wrote this tune -- attempts to cheer him up by singing "Always Look on the Bright Side of Life". The other 140 crucified men join along (!). This surreal scene alone makes the movie worth watching.
This original (sort) of barbershop arrangement humbly tries to stay in the upbeat spirit of the original, minus some of the rather dark British humor. Some of the melodic line was borrowed from Garfunkel's version of the song as well. I hope you'll enjoy!
I think we all could use a little Monty Python whistlin' these days...
Hope you enjoy this original arrangement of an old but timeless classic!
PS: yes, some of the original lyrics were adapted to suit the format of this channel. Choices, choices... :)
Alternate lyrics:
Life's a silly git, when you look at it.
Life's a gaff, a jest, a joke, it's true.
Counterfeit was a good edit, but the dark side line felt really off
@@watergod321 "Don't be Donald Duck" felt off. Why that choice? "Don't be silly, chumps" is less offensive than calling someone a "Donald Duck", in my book.
My barbershop-choir might need this; did you make it?!
- Can we buy it?! :D
@@FunnyFungus Yes, the link is in the video description. Learning tracks & sheet are available.
Not gonna lie, I watched this wondering whether or not you'd edit a certain line. In any case, your arrangement is, as always, impeccable!
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it!
2 lines were changed and it upsets me a bit.
@@dudesqr Yeah, but given the branding, you had to know it would happen
@@watergod321 that, and having a curse word in there too. Which is why " a bit".
@@dudesqr It was more than just two lines they cut the whole "forget about your sin" verse and just repeated the chorus with "bright" used repeatedly instead of bright, light, and right"! "don't be silly chumps" into "don't be Donald Duck"? Why? I can understand not wanting to sing "life's a piece of shit" but that?
This was my granddads favorite song from his favorite movie. He passed away in 2012. Thank you for this. It means a lot
Thank you for sharing this, David. Glad this tune hit home. Be well.
Sorry for your lost David make sure to always look on the bright side of life when you think of him, he seems like he was a good man.
It's a shame that you can't grin and whistle at the same time 😆
Haha, I already whistle a bit out of tune (flat...), so that wouldn't help. :)
@@JulienNeel but the whistling sounded just as amazing as the singing! I was seriously impressed..
Some can, through their teeth!
@@00bean00 yup. I'm one of them.
I can.., my teeth make me able to whistle mouth wide open if I wanted to.
When chewing on life's gristle, don't grumble, give a whistle!
This would be perfect in a Fallout game.
That "Dark side" incorporation was flawless!
Thanks! I'll add more inside jokes in future arrangements. :)
I had to smile at the star wars whistle part. Thank you so much for something to enjoy and smile about during these difficult times. Your voice is great and your is heart strong.
We needed this right now. Thank you.
You bet, I needed it too. Stay safe & keep on whistlin'!
I had a crappy day and you just made it better :) I'm struggling with mental health
You are never alone ❤️❤️❤️❤️
0:33 Always Look on the Bright Side of Life
1:10 Always Look on the Bright Side of Life
1:47 Always Look on the Bright Side of Life
Can't wait, already humming along in my head 😀.
1:52 Monty Python and Star Wars mixed into BARBERSHOP HARMONY??!?!? This is amazing
Listening to your arrangements since 10 years now, due to your interpretation of Baby on Board! Thanks for opening up the beauty of barbershop music to me. Love you, my dude. Greetings from Germany. À plus!
Danke schön!
La bonne humeur est contagieuse dit-on ! En cette période de pandémie, cette chanson est précieuse. Merci !
Excellent, as always! Thanks for the great harmonies!!
Thank you for dropping by! Pass it along! :)
Yo! I was gonna try my hand to arrange this song as a meme, but I'm VERY glad you did it! Thank you thank you thank you!
Love this song, and love you videos
After yesterday, I needed this. Thanks!
YES
My son is special needs and he really likes barbershop 💈quartets and this song it reminds us what is written in the Bible in for example Romans 8:28 - And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God to them that are called according to his purpose. Proverbs 17:22 - A merry heart ❤ does good like a medicine 💊 but a broken 💔😔☹ spirit dries the bones. Philippians 4:4 & 8 - Rejoice in the Lord always and again I say rejoice. Finally brethren whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things. Jeremiah 29:11 - For I know the thoughts that I think toward you said the Lord thoughts of peace and not of evil to give you an expected end. Psalms 30:5 - For his anger 😠 endures but a moment; in his favor is life: weeping 😭 may endure for a night 🌙, but joy 😀😄 comes in the morning 🌄. Psalms 34:19 - Many are the afflictions of the righteous: but the Lord delivers him out of them all. Psalms 118:24 - This is the day which the Lord has made: we will rejoice and be glad in it. Psalms 126:2,3,5, & 6 - Then our mouth 👄 was filled with laughter 🤣😄😆, and our tongue 👅 was filled with singing 🗣🎙🎶🎤: then they said among the heathen, The Lord has done great things for them. The Lord has done great things for us; whereof we are glad 🙂. They that sow in tears 😢 shall reap in joy. He that goes forth and weeps, bearing precious seed, shall doubtless come again with rejoicing, bringing his sheaves with him. Ecclesiastes 3:1 & 4 - To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven: A time to weep 😭, and a time to laugh 😆; A time to mourn 😫, and a time to dance 💃🕺;
I want this to play at my funeral
This is amazing! We were singing this tune on our road trip this past weekend. So hyped for this one!
How do you come with up with your arrangements? Barbershop Quartet music is always something I've wanted to understand but still have difficulty wrapping my brain around the music theory behind it.
I feel like I've been transported back to the 1930's. Great job as always, Julian!
My 2 and a half year old always dances to your videos. Your voice is amazing thank you for sharing your talent
Aww, you made my dad with that story. :)
Amazing arrangement and harmonies as always. I'm Brian, and so is my wife and we think you're a Jolly good fellow.
this version is funny!!!! and cleaner but great!!!!love this version!!!
Omg I was patsy in spamalot and this made me so happy
This version is more child friendly thanks to
This is exactly what we need right now.
I particularly enjoyed the rewriting of profanity. Great cover (as usual)!
Thanks! It was a tricky choice, as many fans of the original may feel it's a bit washed out. What can you do? :)
@@JulienNeel But it also makes it infinitely more shareable, so I appreciate it
I always love it when people add extra facial expressions to accentuate lyrics. :)
Wonderful!
Sine you asked, here's a couple ideas
Oldies Pop: "Windy" by The Association
Celtic/Folk Rock: "Ordinary Day" by Great Big Sea
Meme?: Трололо И Trololo Song И Я Очерь Рад, Ведь Я Наконец Возвращаюсь (also known as the Trololo song) might make for a good Apr1 upload.
I'd like to suggest more, but it's tough trying to figure out how a song will sound a cappella. Some songs are more conducive to the format than others.
You do a great job with all your chosen songs! Thank you
Thanks, much appreciated!
@@JulienNeel You'd do great on the Trololoo😃o! 😂
I really wish I could buy this and have it in my playlist
Thanks, it's my favorite Monty Python song.
I miss the sheet music / sing along in parts, which was nice. I used to do barbershop, but nowadays I can only whistle, so I liked the whistling bits.
I was waiting for another post from you again Julien. Thank you. I love yor music.
I wish there was a lyrics list
I love barbershop quartet singing! Beautiful harmonizing in their singing! Barbershop quartet singing is a beauty!
Couldn’t have come out at a better time!
Thanks for sharing your talents with us!
Love you and your art, Julien. Some of your content are part of my life since I found you in 2011! Great arrange and production as aways, cheers from Brazil!
Great arrangement!
Such a cute arrangement!
Great wonderful ❣️ awesome
Amazing
Great one! I played it at 1.5 speed. Lost some sound quality, but I like that speed tempo for your song. Nicely done though. Cheered me up. :D
Les harmonies sont ouf !
So cute! Stay well, buddy! :)
😂😂😂😂
Thank you for making this sad world a little happier.
I'd like to hear your rendition of "The Wreck of The Edmund Fitzgerald" by Gordon Lightfoot.
Some day, maybe. :)
This is fantastic. My only question is, how were you ever able to find four of those amazing vintage hats? You must have been searching for years to get all four. Wow.
Blessed are the Cheesemakers.
Well, obviously it's not meant to be taken literally. It refers to any manufacturers of dairy products.
Супер!!! Ты лучший!!! Ты сам делаешь аранжировки? Поражает с какой любовью ты исполняешь свои песни! Можешь, сделать что-то из русских песен на русском языке? Было бы интересно...
Lovely man.
i've missed you man! great job as always! you're wonderful!
Great, now I have another song I need to listen to meticulously and perfect!👍🏻 Haha in seriousness though, love singing along to your stuff. 😊👏
Oh oui un de tes meilleurs
Greetings from Guatemala. Just discovered this channel. I love this version of this song. Great singing.
Wish I could make vids like this. I miss singing barbershop, even if I only did it briefly.
I appreciate "life's a counterfeit", but I was looking forward to "cheer up ya old bugga, give us a grin!"
Always am impressed by your diction, and how wide you open your moth. Excellent results.
This has literally brought water to my eyes 😂
Loved the 1:26 mood variation 😉
This was, and I don’t kid, sung on the burning decks of HMS Sheffield in 1982
Yay! I so enjoy seeing your videos pop up in my feed, rare though they are. Always make my day
It's amazing how your voice doesn't seem your voice
Nice clean up job, Julien! This is a good way for us to work. Any ideas?
Very well done! Will you share the sheet music or the xml?
Thanks. You'll find my arrangement & learning tracks on my website. The link is in the video description.
@@JulienNeel Thanks! Can we purchase also the xml file?
No way! I sang this with my men's ensemble in high school!!! The first 30 seconds was my solo!
Amazing harmonies.
Extraordinary editing.
Fabulous. Just flat out superlative.
Thank you.
Thanks Wayne, much appreciated! Stay safe and keep on singing!
Long live Monty Python and barbershop! lml
Good song with a good message!
So happy to see 2020 didn't take you from us! Stay Happy and Safe!
This was awesome, can you sing My Bonnie lies over the ocean next?
I love this song!
You're genius Julien. Yeah. A fckn musical demon.
Love this song.
Beautiful man.
Thank you! :)
Do you record the video and audio separately then just synch it?
Gosh, this made me SO happy! I’ve probably watched it about 50 times now. Thank you for sharing your brilliant work (and sense of humor) with us! :D
This is from the movie Monty Python life of brian in the ending
Try the mr bean theme but in B sharp
It would be great I think.
This is such a brilliant arrangement really love your stuff!
With this song I remember Monty Python
Your voice is something else. ❤️
While sung well with obvious skill this sanitized version takes all the fun and jokes out of the Pythons version in "Life of Brian".
Thanks. I had to make choices. Singing the original lyrics would have almost certainly upset another group of people.
I did throw in a few original jokes however.
Wait till Biggus Dickus hears of this
One of my favourites from you! Thank you!
Donald: I resent this.
Nailed it! :::snicker:::
Pitch perfect.Well done!
Wonderful
Amazing
You wrote on the channel page... U sing in German... Let me see a video in German
It's been a while indeed, but I've sung a few (Es ist ein Ros' entsprungen, Guter Mond, etc.)
i stan you
Bravo !!!
Perfect!
it's always a pleasure listening to your excellent renderings!! all the best, Julien
Grazie Enrico! Long time no see/hear. I hope you are well. Would you like to do another collab sometime?
@@JulienNeel it would be time to do some singing together!!! I'm in ;)
Im sad. Im three hours late ;-;
This is nice, though. Life sucks, but there is a bright side of life. I needed this after classes.
