I have been going to a drum circle in Ocean Beach San Diego CA. It’s been there for 20 years now. Nothing is strictly enforced and most of people use common sense. We have 5 to 6 guys that leads it very well and most of the other drummers know most of the rhythms we play. It’s wonderful and it’s a great community gathering.
It was perfect!! Thank you. I attend a great drum circle in Delray Beach Florida that is everything you just described and more. It is ALL impromptu and people from the community who are at various levels of playing mostly drums. We have people with lots of other percussion instruments too as well as all sorts of dancers. There are some rules, mostly for safety and to keep some structure which is necessary. the energy, the sense of community and teamwork is amazing. I would not want it any other way. Yes, it is different. No one person is i the spotlight. We do have someone who helps set the pace but he allows others to do the same. It is just wonderful!!
Agree 100%. Drum circles are not about music: their primary focus is participation and community vibes. It's like calling a mexican wave a dance art form - it isn't. The most frustrating thing for anybody with a little music sense is that most circles have about 30 plus instruments (80% are djembes) but they all sound the same - they play a slow boogaa boogaa rhythm that gets monotonous after 15 mins, let alone 3 hours. Worst part is the bad hippy dancing that accompanies them.
How can you have a musical approach to a drum circle? It's not about music or being musical. You said that right in this video. It's entirely improvised with no specific leadership or direction. What do you mean by a musical approach to a drum circle?
Also, even things that are 1000 years old doesn’t mean that they’re good. A thousand year old medicine cannot cure things that we can cure now. Or we have had wars for thousands of years, so that’s a good thing because we haven’t done it for so long.😀
I am loving everything about each other things togetherness off kinds around the world musical instruments folks A.strange B.trombone C.woodwinds D.percussion E.other instruments including in the world music culture music folks

I just attended Micheal Teller's drum circle on Saturday in Boca Raton while I was in town on vacation - it was great!

If you take a pizza and fold it into a taco shape, and seal the edges, it's called a calzone. Lol
Love your instruction so thank you. May I recommend to other viewers your video of 2014: The Drum Circle - Defined.

10:30 ish yeah you're making sense! The ball example was better than the pizza in my opinion! Great video!
A folded pizza might be termed a calzone in some places.
drum circle =df orchestra for stoned hippies dancing badly
This is a European perspective to brum circle or Bruning..
Grateful Dead Show Parking lot!!!!

It was such a rant that I still don't know what a drum circle is. From your talk I know what it's not.
I still don’t understand it after this 16 minute rant.
CALZONE. Fold a pizza and you have a calzone!
