The GOOD thing that can be said about the pandemic is that my drumming (djembe and congas) has improved markedly....what with so much more time to practice and advance my skills. Much thanks to World Drum Club with so many inspiring challenges and a chance to play with other drummers (instead of alone). Also, it is motivating to listen to and try so many styles and rhythms from around the world.

I don’t really agree with “never sticking to the djembe”, I personally use a sticky-ish tone and base to help the slap stand out more.
However my methods are not traditional, I believe in using multiple methods for each tone so you can have more options.
    My slaps:
    1. Three finger tips on the edge.
    2. Hitting with spread fingers at an angle.
    3. Hitting so my index finger tip just slams the drum head.
    4. Thumb slap.
My tone is just three finger, boring but functional.
Base, you can ether hit it in the middle with your fingertips like Kalani (sorry I’m spelling that wrong) does it, or you can do the “middle of the drum” palm method. I find they produce different effects, so I use different ones depending on my intention with the music.
Don’t get bogged down in only one way of doing things, you’ll have less fun. And as far as I’m concerned fun is the express reason I play, that and borderline music therapy.
On saturdays if there’s something happening in town I like to go up and play at markets. My djembe is a 100$ meinel with a wood body, rope tuning, and calfskin head. It goes with me to pride events, or just when I wanna go out and play random strangers.
