I saw Deep Purple for the first time in 1984 when all the original members got back together for the album “Perfect Strangers” I was blown away by Ritchie Blackmore. He was amazing. I never knew that he was so talented. I was 19 and went to Giants Stadium for many concerts, but I don’t remember hearing about this concert. I definitely would have gone if I knew about it. I saw Pink Floyd there that summer. Best concert I’ve ever been to.
I was 9 and just discovering music at the time. Guns n’ Roses was the band for me back then even if I didn’t understand what the lyrics of “Anything Goes” were about. These days, I admire all three bands to some level, but Blackmore is the man.
When I was a young guy, my Two favorite bands were Deep Purple and Aerosmith a close second. Now I'm a more mature, there is a lot of stuff i don't listen to anymore...but Deep Purple will always be my favorite band. They're music wasn't about drugs or dark, sleezy lyrics.. Just high energy music that to this day makes me feel happy.
Ritchie Blackmore simply The King. He has influenced countless guitar players. Ian Gillan is the BEST of the screamers. Ian Paige one of if not the best hard rock drummer. Roger Glover one of the most solid hard rock bass players ever. Between Glover and Paige you had the best rhythm backbone ever. John Lord was basically BRILLIANT in every way. Not to mention the Hammond run through a Marshall amp was a virtual BEAST!!!! Deep Purple for me has been one of the best hard rock bands ever. GnR had some great idols/teachers to warm up for this night. Sorry I missed this combination of hard rock talent. I have seen them all. However, the best hard rock band I have ever seen was UFO. UFO warmed up for RUSH in late 76' October in Memphis. I was 13yo and it blew me away. Michael Schenker was STUNNING!! Strangers in the Night is still considered to be the best live hard rock album ever recorded. Thnx for posting this!! A REAL gem !! 😊😊😮
Before cell phones, unfortunately. I feel that way about the Rainbow '76 gigs. Mostly rough bootleg audio exist and very little video footage. How could not someone realize the magic of this era and do better at capturing it I'll never know!
