Cheap powdered eye shadow is a fantastic alternative to pan pastels. You can get a plethora of colors that the pricey commercial pastels wouldn't give you, and you don't have to crush soft pastels. Eye shadow applicators and other makeup tools work great too!❤
Thank you for reminding me about this...I used to use eyeshadow very early in my colouring journey for the reason you mentioned - the wide variety of colours you can get! I should try playing with them again sometime. Thank you 🤗💗
So interesting, tysm! I use my soft pastells only for background, and had never thought to use them as a base for my pencils or anywhere else except backgrounds. I can‘t wait to try this 👍💕
I’d love to see you do the rest of this page, I don’t think I’ve seen anyone else do it. It looks beautiful so far! Thank you for sharing this with us ❤️
Thank you so much! And I am so sorry....I already completed this page without thinking to do a colour along....hopefully I can colour another page on video that you will enjoy 🤗💗
This is just beautiful Shelly is the back ground soft pastels also? It’s so vibrant I really like it a lot and the bee is just amazing 🤩 thank you for sharing !
You give the best commentary and instructions. You would be a wonderful audio book voice. Especially for children’s books. Your voice is so soothing and calming. I really do need to use my art supplies more and for different jobs. Thanks for the inspiration and ideas.
Thank you so much, I am so glad you like my videos and commentary 🤗💗 means a lot! Yes! Definitely play around with your supplies, you will definitely find fun ways to use them!! 🤩
Hi Shelly, Wow! This bee is stunning all by herself! You really know how to use these soft pastels! I got the full set of Pan Pastels for Mother’s Day a few years back, I don’t recommend buying all 80 unless (My FSS got the best of me lol) you create landscapes or portraits but they have small sets like, landscape colors, primary, skin tone colors, portrait colors which are different from the skin tone. Don’t buy more than one set as you will have duplicates and that’s a waste of money. Blicks and Cult Pens sell them by the singles for the best price. Make sure to use the tools for pan pastels not eyeshadow applicators or cotton swab which are perfect for soft pastels. Yes you’re right, everything about pan pastels and the tools are expensive but you will have them for a lifetime because you will use a tiny fraction of the soft pastels. They come in big round flat circles and have a ton of pigment in each one. I know you aren’t ready to buy them yet, but try to remember this information or just ask me again or research them. Thank you so much for this amazing tutorial on soft pastels, I’ve never seen anyone use them as well as you do!🥰🤗
Hi Keni, thank you so much! So glad you liked the video. And thank you so much for that information...I will definitely keep it in mind. I have never made an effort to research the pan pastels yet, so that is super helpful!! Yes, I have heard the panpastels will last a lifetime! Maybe one day I will try them out hopefully 🤗💗
@@shelscolouringjourney You’re so sorry Shelly! I love all your videos! I’m so happy Imogen shared your channel, I had already been following you on Instagram, so when I heard you had a channel too, I was so excited! Lol I have so much knowledge about coloring supplies, I’ve been coloring since 1917 but then I got very sick and was down for 5 years but that time is gone and I’m moving forward lol. Oh gosh, here I go again rambling on…Take care Shelly!🤗💖
Don't if you already decided on buying them.. but if you buy a set buy a (box) 20 set (painting, pastel, shades, dark) those aren't duplicates .. the painting set is great starter set. If you don't want to invest just buy the blender which also works with your 'normal' pastels and smoothes out the colour.
Yes I always use fixative after pastel work and pencils work over it well. You can also use water medium after you have spray with fixative - you just need to make sure you choose a workable fixative so that you can use your pencils on it. Hope this helps 🤗💗
Hi Shelly do you have a tutorial for the background? Can you let us all know what medium you used it is just beautiful. As is the rest of the page - you are so talented. Thank you Chris 🌸🌸
Hi Chris, I am so sorry I didn't have a tutorial for this background. I had done it in my own time before thinking to use this page for the soft pastel video... However, I used neocolor IIs for the background, if you would like to know the shades I used, left me know if that will help 🤗💗

Your work is amazing and I was just in awe of the finished bee. I know you use fixative for your soft pastels but, do you find that you need to use it on the distress inks as well? Thank you
Thank you so much! So glad you like my colouring. 🤗💗 I actually tend to use fixative on all my pages even if I don't use soft pastel, because I am heavy handed. I find that you need to left the distress ink dry a bit, if I go straight onto a page after applying the inks to colour, I find it can smudge a bit....but I have never needed to spray it to prevent transfer after it has dried up. Hope this helps. 🤗
Hi Shel! Just recently I came across your channel and I am watching a whole lot of your tutorials right now. I really like your work and learn a lot from you. Would you be so kind to tell me why you use the Albrecht Durer pencils after you put down the soft pastels and not the Polychromos?
Hello! I am so glad you found me and thank you for taking the time to watch my videos 🤩 I love how the ADs work both wet and dry and in fact I prefer how they work dry than the Polychromos. Also….I don’t own the Polychromos 😂😂 they would work fine on the soft pastels too, so if that’s what you have, it will work great 🤗💗
@@shelscolouringjourney thank you so much for answering!! I am the lucky one, who owns both sets 🙈🙈! So using both of them after the soft pastels will show me which one will work best for me. Amazing, love your videos! Can you help me? My English isn't fluent, but I'll try to explain my question! How do you handle soft pastels? Do you rub the cotton swab on them? Or do you scrape the sticks and then pick it up with the swab?
Thank you, glad you are enjoying my videos and your English is great! I usually tend to scrape the soft pastels off on a pallete and pick it up with a swab (although now days I use sponge applicators instead). But sometimes I also scrape the pastels off directly on the paper and then blend them out. Hope this helps 🤗💗
Hi Shelly, it's not clear in the video, did you add fixative before going in with pencils? I usually do it at the end, does it change the texture of the white of the paper that you haven't colored yet?
Hello! I don't always use fixative before going over with pencils....but I have used fixative and I find it works find for me to be honest. Doesn't make a huge difference to the texture of the paper that it affects my colouring I don't think 🤗💗
Hi again! Is the fixative you showed in the video the one you're using to fix pages after doing the oil pastel? Because I have the same product, but it doesn't say anything on it that it's a workable fixative, I haven't tried using it as workable, only finish fixative. Is this the one you're using pencils on top of?
Hello! Yes, this is the fixative that I use all the time, and I have worked over it with pencils. You are right, it doesn't say anywhere that it is a workable fixative, but I had bought it in store and asked them about it. And it works well as a workable fixative for sure. Hope this helps 🤗💗
I have wanted to use pastel pencils, pan-pastels, or pastel sticks in my coloring books. How can I use them without smearing or transferring the pastel onto other papers? I have used a fixative but the odor was so strong even when it dried. Are there other methods of fixing the pastel to the paper?
I usually use workable fixative and you are right the odour is quite strong. I allow the book to air open for a while and I find that helps. But I am not sure of any other methods....I have heard about hairspray but I am not sure how it works, never tried it. 🤗💗
