I can attest to all of this! Been using MuseScore and GarageBand/Audacity for every demo I’ve made thus far for all my musicals.
As far as ambient noise goes, sometimes my family’s dogs have walked by while recording and my cast will refer to their jingling collars getting picked up on the mic as “spicy tambourine orchestrations”

Super useful insights! The piano becomes a necessity as you start submitting for developmental productions. As a guitarist, I’ll have to also admit that pianos allow for a lot more experimentation with music theory. And piano accompaniment (my most recent challenge) also becomes part of the storytelling.
So yes, the sooner we learn about notation software and add a piano score, the better! Thanks for putting this key lesson out for others to learn upfront 😃

Yes, sheet music does become necessary and playing piano is a great skill/tool to have, absolutely. That being said, still not necessary for demos!

This is great! I DO play guitar, so I'd love a video on how you can do a do w just guitar. Sounds simple, I know, but it's intimidating to have this huge produced sound in your head, and have to capture/evoke it with rudimentary guitar. And that's not even addressing the variety of voices one wants. How do I, w a low voice, sing the female parts? It's all very intimidating. And I've recorded (and sung) and released two albums! Help!

Hey David - Thanks for the questions! What level of demo are you asking about? For the type of composer demos I'm talking about here, you should be able to use your own guitar skills and voice to make something that gives a sense of the song. For something more in-depth and more produced-sounding, there are many routes to take!
