I like the way he talks about the typical dwarf story... you know, asexual. It's probably the most important thing for him to point out, because George R.R. Martin created what he needed. It's one reason, among many others, that make the TV show Game of Thrones such an tremendous story to watch. Tyrion is one of the best part of the show for sure! Without Peter Dinklage, it wouldn't be the same at all.

I think Tyrion Lannister has done much to remove any awkwardness a person might feel about talking to little people. This was a landmark role. I'm not sure if I have ever seen a little person in my 45 years. They must be extremely rare?

I find it kind of amusing how Dinklage naturally has mannerisms such as rubbing his nose frequently and generally touching his face -which is exactly what Tyrion does in the books- but he'd probably be directed not to do that if he attempted it.

i dont give a fuck about how old that comment is but.. i have to say something about it. He once said he wasn't confident on roles about his height when he was younger but by time, he stopped caring it and gave a chance to every opportunity for his carreer. He wouldn't be on where he is now tho, if he didn't accept the role Tyrion.

He has done something truly special. How many people can say that when they die? If he had quit acting at any point along the journey, he never would have reached this final point of glory and accomplishment. He's 43 years old, and he's really made it. He really did something.

Tyrion's not a typical fantasy dwarf. He's a real person with dwarfism in a fantasy setting. A bit different. Now he did play a fantasy dwarf in Chronicles of Narnia... but slimmer pickings back then. He has a lot more control over what he's offered now.

  • @kargelr

Gimli singlehandedly repaired relations between the dwarves and the elves through his courtesy to Galadriel. And he sailed with Legolas to the Undying Lands. I think Tolkein considered his dwarves to be quite noble and important.

You know... that is exactly what I've thought for many years. Even before I saw Lord of the Rings for the first time. I really didn't like the way people with dwarfism were treated like "things" in movies. Like some comedic plot point. I've always wanted to see a movie where a little person where treated as a PERSON not a stereotype. That's one of the many reasons why I love Game of Thrones. more power to you people!

  • @nullrand
    @nullrand 11 років тому +1

The words are pretty harmless by themselves. The intent to offend is actually enough to offend. You can be called any name you like, but when it is used with offensive intent it hurts.
The other offensive thing is the labeling and alienating, one doesn't need to call someone names to alienate him, it is enough to treat him like a thing, like nothing more than a single characteristic. I get that a lot when strangers want to take pictures with me, I realize the see nothing but a dwarf, a thing.

For me strange to hear him speaking 'American'. His British accent is good, altho generic 'well-educated'. I would pay money to hear him speak like Sean Bean or a local yokel British accent. Gweneth Paltrow does great British accents, getting both region and education spot on. She has the advantage of being married to an Englishman.
But don't knock Mr Dinklage, His Brit is very very good.

I'm not trying to arbitrarily force anyone to call anyone anything. If you're comfortable with being call a dwarf, then I am certainly not going to say anything against that. And really, its the connotation that words carry that cause more offence than anything else. If someone has gone through their whole life being called a dwarf with a negative connotation attached to it then I don't think they are going to favour being called that. You may have had a different experience with the word.

I associate dwarfs in stories and legends in no way to dwarfs in the real world! Dwarfs in legends are a different people, have long beards, and are miners (most of the time). Dwarfs in the real world look and behave nothing like them!
Stereotypes I would more likely associate with dwarfism are dwarfs that were displayed in circuses and freakshows, doing tricks and stuff, or maybe Mini-Me from Austin Powers. Though Game of Thrones will probably change that forever :) :)

I'm from England too and I cringed the first few times I heard his so-called "British accent". Then I got used to it and I think he's a wonderful actor. By the way, there is no such thing as a British accent. If he had a Scottish, Welsh, or Northern Irish accent (all British) you would name them for what they are. If you live in England you would say he was putting on an "English" accent.

  • @mjoek

I think there is something fundamentally wrong with the way "Dwarfs" are looked at. For instance. I never linked the "mythical dwarfs" to "human dwarfs". Mostly mythical dwarfs are fat, ugly, deformed or a combination of those. To me those two are completely different. So I guess the big mistake here is having named any mythical creature "dwarf" instead of just another name.

Tolkien's dwarves were pretty asexual, I must admit. However, his hobbits seem to be about as sexual as his other characters and are probably the least fantastical of the lot. For instance, the relationship between Sam and Rosie is pretty important in LOTR and there are a few others that are mentioned. I also recall there being mention of a marriage between a hobbit and and an elf in one of his books, though I forget which...It's been a while since I've read any Tolkien :P

Well, Americans would hardly be experts at what a good English accent is, of course. But I think Americans ware wary of non-English actors using an English accent, because the English-accent affectation is waaaaay overused in TV, movies, advertisements, etc. Think "The Gekko." In all of the Southern US, we can't find a gekko who talks, but there's one from the UK?

now, you're talking about the books. I'm talking about the movies where he's reduced to a comic relief character who's somewhat racist and obnoxious.
How Tolkien treated Gimli in his books is something completely different from what Dinklage and I am talking about: movies. Dwarves in movies are nothing but stereotypes. Gimli is utterly useless in the movies besides his puns.
