This is gold - being in ERP for 10 years plus , many organizations continue to fail as they are poorly (or not at all) planned. From my university days, i remember a sign in the professors office stating… “ Poor planning on your part does not necessitate an emergency on mine.”

I too have listened to many of these on the way to my job as part of an underplanned, understaffed, oversold software implementation where I have participated in the exact “requirements uncovering” stage that Is described as the source of so many delays. The enterprise software industry does a disservice to many by not pointing to the larger “change program” that the client needs to wrap around the “change project” they are selling.
I take your lessons to heart Eric, keep up the great work!

A huge admiral of you Eric, I see you as the Larry fink when it comes to tech transformation. You say it the way it is, no spinning! Thank you for sharing

100% correct on these real and costly considerations. I really appreciate your point at the 12:00 minute mark. From what I've experienced on the IT side, business process improvement often has minimal consideration before we start working with the software vendor. At that point, they take on a best effort attempt at helping a company sort out how things will look in the final state. I've often felt that there has to be a better and more intentional way of ensuring the project delivers on change value.

Hi Eric - your videos make me smarter! 2 questions.. First: Should I assume it is always best to go thru the pre-imp planning phase (as best as possible) prior to a software search? I assume that will find the best vendor and do a bunch of the work before the build phase - right? Secondly - what are your estimates for TCO for MES, EAM, SC, etc.? I assume it would likely overstate if you repeat using that 2-3%/3-5% for each major tech implementation. LMK any data you have on that. Thanks!

Are there consultants who are industry experts who can help organisations at the pre-implementation phase?
The irony with organisations is that ERP or digital transformation is not an every day occurrence and most have no clue where to start. They operate with legacy, disjointed, disparate systems and processes based on knowledge and practice built over the years.
All this and other factors and pain points then forces them to consider digital transformation or ERP system. The question then remains: what is the correct way of doing things or best practice. It becomes tough if organisations cannot wrap their heads round or have problem conceptualising, defining.. This is where I feel experts should come in and assess the organisation processes, systems, business and functional needs, etc from strategic to operational levels and advise on ERP or other apt solutions.

Yes, there are consultants that will help with the pre-implementation phase. That is a big part of what we do at Third Stage Consulting Group. Please contact me if you would like to discuss! eric@thirdstage-consulting.com
