    We're all weird. We're watching a guy pour sulphuric acid over random objects.

      Debbie Holcomb how much is the concentration for the battery acid? I don't have the apparatus to prepare those stuffs. Plus, it can cause damage to others if they didn't notice it

      Rosie Lee Sulfuric acid can be bought easily through amazon. Sulfuric acid is dangerous, it burns ( if dilluted) and melts skin, leaving horrific damage. Although it is a popular drain cleaner, there is no need for someone to buy sulfuric acid, especially concentrated sulfuric acid or anything over .1 in Molarity.

      It turns black due to carbonisation,
      it burns as the Ph is around 2,
      you'd neutralise and then dispose of the substance,
      yes there would be a groggy, acidic smell.

    Just casually has sulphuric acid

  • @Thesimon0206
    @Thesimon0206 8 років тому

    It turns black because the acid reacts with the sugar in the materials: H2SO4 (sulfuric acid) + C6H12O6 (glucose) --> 6C (carbon) + 6H2O (water). Carbon is black, so that's why it turns black, the steam is the water generated from the chemical reaction. It reacts with other types of sugars the same way, like C12H22O11 (sucrose).

    Starting at 8:20 what you see is the reaction happening in reverse. The excess carbon (black stuff), produced in the forward reaction, mixed with water while heated creates cotton balls. Theoretically you could produce cotton balls via this method if you had carbon, water, acid, and some heat but it's just easier for manufacturers to just use machines to cut cotton into balls.

    The black liquid is the carbonification of the dissolved substance due to dehydration from the sulfuric acid. In a chemical reaction where dehydration occurs, the reacting molecule loses a molecule of water. This can be done via a dehydration agent such as sulfuric acid. The dehydration reactions demonstrated in this video are exothermic because more chemical bonds are being made then broken. Breaking bonds absorbs energy while forming bonds releases energy. The heat generated from these exothermic reactions causes the water molecules to evaporate leaving behind hydrogen and carbon.
    In essence it is the conversion of vegetable matter to coal.

    Why did the rice in the sushi not turn black and melt?

  • @JumboDS64
    @JumboDS64 8 років тому +1

    Reason for toilet paper and sponge becoming black (i think):
    Toilet paper (and artificial sponge) is made mostly of cellulose (C6H10O5), a carbohydrate.
    The sulphuric acid kind of absorbs the hydrogen (H) and oxygen (O) to make water (H2O), leaving carbon (C), which is black. (The burger's bun is bread, which also contains a type of carbohydrate, so it also turns black.)
    C6H10O5 --(H2SO4)--> 6C + 5H2O
    - from Wikipedia

    • @smellywilly1517
      @smellywilly1517 8 років тому

      JumboDS64 it's the carbonisation of the chemical compounds within the substances. the video title should be changed to: "dissolving different things in sulphuric acid", you are not burning or melting anything in this chemical reaction.

    • @JumboDS64
      @JumboDS64 8 років тому

      yeah i know it's not actual burning, the earlier edit was referring to how it appears burnt because it's been converted to carbon, similar to how burning something also converts it to carbon.

      Lps Allison I've never seen reaction like this. Periodic Videos put chicken drumsticks in hydrochloric (stomach acid), sulphuric acid, and some other acid that I can't remember the name of. They did not react at all like this.
      I don't think if I vomited and cleaned it up with a toilet roll, that it would immediately start bubbling and turn black. I recall getting drops of nitric acid on my skin. The areas touched by it didn't even turn red.
      An acidic reaction of this speed does not seem possible.
