I feel like Isaac is also popular just because it is a work of art and passion and it’s clear. It approaches incredibly dark themes in such a compelling way. One massive “oh my god I see it now” moment for me was realizing that Isaac was slowly dying in a chest, but that was hinted at from the very beginning because every single room is the same dimensions as the chests you encounter in the game. The entire game is the chest Isaac is suffocating in.
There’s actually a good reason for this. NEVER take damocles in genesis room. It entirely breaks the gensis room. Items start spawning inside eachother instead of next to eachother. Trying to grab any item will almost always result in you getting stuck between all the item pedestals. I don’t know if this was fixed in [REP+], but as it stands you should not grab damocles from genesis. Edit: This is also from mine and one of my friends experience so do with this info as you will but let it serve as a warning
@@Gemzzi it'd be a problem if you're in a break run with 50+ items, but matt doesnt have that much so it wont be that much of a trouble with items merging
Well, theres always a chance that on the one year anniversary that you started this, he’ll play Terraria. I’ve seen someone else on another channel ask for one thing for easily over 2 years and finally got it, so not all is lost!
The biggest reason that AAA companies would never do something like Isaac is thusly; Risk. Isaac is a game that was a massive risk to even release in the first place. Now it's almost ubiquitous in gaming culture, it's the gold standard for rouge-likes, it's the one that everyone tells people to play. The second reason is that Isaac is a passion project through and through, a labor of love beyond almost any game release when it first came out, and now it's still almost unmatched. More then likely the main reason Isaac is still popular on youtube is just like matt said, the game has variety. No two runs are the same unless they are seeded so every day is completely different.
Rockest bottom Edit: yo Matt, idk if you’ll see this but I was pretty sad, then I started watching your vid and it really helped my mood, thank you, you’re an incredible person
Pulling that Game Grumps reference was beautiful, it's one of my favorite GG moments of all time (and one of the most perfectly timed glitches ever). It often pops back in my mind and I have to rewatch it
Wait a second. When Mattman is talking about why other rougelikes aren’t as good as Isaac he uses to word verity which also means options like the item options from the hit video game binding of Isaac (hidden reference 🤔)
2:15 new item idea: rainbow penny! Every time you pick up a penny you roll twice on a table that has every penny effect (at each roll being like a 35% so you can hit double nothings and double things pretty often if youre un/lucky). If you want to do the bumbo thing and have a tiny chance for an item you can too. I know this probably isn't hype enough of an item for a video but I don't know how to code so this is my way of sharing it with the community :)
Highly recommend you to try out Balatro as it has the same gameplay loop as isaac of going through it doing x thing and unlocking suff while being able to then increase the difficulty. You've mentioned that being the thing that you feel drags people into Isaac and I could say the same of balatro so try it out some time in your free time.
Isaac is genuinely such a great game due to just how much variety there is 700+ items, ~150 trinkets, nearly 100 cards, pills and runes, over 20 different floor types, 34 characters, nearly 100 bosses, and that's just the base game, not even including how easy this game is to mod and put your own ideas in. Isaac is the goat, there's nothing else to say. edit: and that's not even getting into the amazing progression system, the music, and the story
The roguelike rant made me decide to suggest some other roguelike games that are similar(as that's the exact reason I enjoy TBOI so much but could never fully put into words): Gungeon(Less so than Isaac but the 'official' synergies plus the 'unofficial' add some insane variety. Plus the guns can add so much more that I could even see there being an argument for it having a more unique variety.) Nuclear Throne(Even less variety but somehow it feels like even more at times due to the, again, guns but this time the characters can play so different it's great.) Currently obsessed with atomicrops so once I'm finished with like 30 runs I'll continue lol
atomicrops its just way too fun, pretty chill game with not that extensive runs, i almost complete all the difficulties and i dont have that many hours, 9/10 cuz i hate the lion character
Chess ain't the OG roguelike when Senet exists. The wiki for it even says, "Senet is depicted in ancient texts, including in Chapter 17 of the Book of the Dead, where the individual who has died plays the game against an invisible opponent," meaning you literally play it solo against RNG just like a modern roguelike
that is why fiendfolio's TopRock trinkey (all stats up while held, but after that while held or consumed, stats cannot be increased) saves your stats when picked up and stays like that for the rest of the run.

i feel like matt would like slay the spire a lot getting certain relics can completely change what kinda deck you want to go for or getting a certain card, all the different ways you can use the cards together in synergy it is similar to isaac in that way
Something also really cool about Issac is if you look at the percentage of players who have unlocked different achievements...consistently high percentages in comparison to a lot of other games, which shows that the people buying the game are really playing it, and playing it a lot at that
Since Matt brought up Risk of Rain and it’s items, I figured I would add on to what he said, as someone with a deep love of Risk of Rain. Obviously, Isaac items have way more variety to them, given how many items there are in the game, but that means when an item isn’t that different to an existing item, it’s way more noticeable. Like with how much of the boss pool is filled with HP ups and Tears and Range ups. I’m not saying this is bad, I’m just bringing this up to say that, because of Risk of Rain’s focus on stacking multiple copies of the same items instead of you mostly only picking up each item once allows the game to make each item feel unique. Also, Risk of Rain has the same batshit insane item concepts as Isaac like making every attack explode or randomly upgrading a couple of your items each stage, but these are mostly kept to the Legendary, Boss, and Void items.
Some of the reasons I love Isaac above other roguelikes: - Has a grid. Might seem like it wouldn't change much but the entire way the game is built on a grid makes it something you can truly dominate, and invites innovation in mods and updates. - Recognizable enemies (and items). Isaac enemies are fun to find, almost like Pokemon, they are just fun and iconic. Also, not every other game has an item as game-changing and iconic as Brimstone. - Simple mechanics with complex interactions. That's a classic, but it always works and adds to the game in my opinion. In what other game would an item like moving box even work? And still the basic mechanics of Isaac are very simple and learnable, being a blast to master. - Mod heaven. A combination of the above features make it not only intuitive and inviting to mod, but also exciting. Having a new floor, a new character or even just new items is always fun in Isaac, which is not something you can easily say for other games. And you know what? Those are common factors in almost all my favorite games. Plants vs. Zombies, Minecraft, 2D Super Mario Bros.: all of them fit the bill. Other games that I also enjoy do have most of those features, such as Terraria and, as nonsense as it might seem at first, the Five Nights at Freddy's point and clicks.
i feel like a major part of isaacs appeal is that most rougelikes are focused on reaction time and being really hard to keep you coming back like Nuclear Throne for example is low variety but its incredibly fast paced meanwhile isaac is one massive knowledge check about how hard you can min max and trying to exhaust all possible outcomes to get your run as op as possible whether that be for show and looking cool or a near necessity when playing someone like tainted lost a problem with risk of rain 2 is that the lategame is usually the same of just getting a shit load of atg's and proc chaining everything to death while in isaac the gamebreaks are unique from each other and the only constant is usually rainbow lasers

To be honest, I absolutely DESPISE the unlock system for Isaac. And that's coming from someone who has played it a decent amount before. Not having any hint as to what gets you unlocks, several unlocks which actively punish you (and not just increasing difficulty), many unlocks being effectively unknowable if playing spoiler free, some unlocks tied to getting multiple seperate marks (ie soul stones), etc. The game is extremely unfriendly for blind playthroughs and new players... whenever you hear or meet new players, it's ALWAYS because they heard of the game from a friend or because they watched someone else play it. Repentance+ has definitely helped a bit due to Void no longer being RNG... but I vastly prefer just about any other roguelike in terms of progression and unlocks.

My opinion on keyboard vs controler: I am a keyboard player! I don't like controler, I tried it, but the thing with having to move with the stick is actually LESS optimal! To me, at least, because while yes, you can walk slower, WASD has more control! The amount of times I walked into spikes because the controller had that very specific drift to it is laughable... Sometimes going straight with a stick isn't exactly straight, you know?
I played Isaac on a controller for a couple years, but then it got enough drift where it was messing me up. Swapped to keyboard about a year ago. Finally got a new controller, and I'm so used to keyboard I just can't go back now
I completely agree with the roguelike variety sentiment. I love so many roguelikes but Isaac has always stuck out. Only one that has got close for me is Enter the Gungeon, just replace all fart jokes with gun puns and otherwise it’s a very similar feel. It may have less items, but it’s got just as much heart and the synergies are great.

Then when i got the r key an 1h30 in i pressed it while wanting to use the active item from the other character, and when i headed to Mother one of my character was so big he hid the other one, taking the trapdoor to the womb. I HATE JACOB AND ESAU SO GOD DAMN MUCH I hope by writing this I made your day, cause it sure as hell wasn’t mine

thank you mattman for your luck i started up a game while listening to you and got parasite basement one on isaac
mattman has in fact not been going angels lately
That’s a peak game grumps clip
Today i had a huge break while playing jacob and esau where i had chaos d6 jumper cables and door step trinket, i killed thousands of imps to force a r key (i needed mega Satan and Mother kill). Then when i got the r key an 1h30 in i pressed it while wanting to use the active item from the other character, and when i headed to Mother one of my character was so big he hid the other one, taking the trapdoor to the womb. I HATE JACOB AND ESAU SO GOD DAMN MUCH
I hope by writing this I made your day, cause it sure as hell wasn’t mine
Mattman is such a mattman moment
Matt blowing up dono despite having a room that gives 4 coins for one bomb
Got cube baby again
Also there should be a cube baby synergy that lets it break rocks fr
honestly selective tm trainer would be really good if the tm trainer items didn't have effects that could basically guarantee your death
Have you tried Enter the Gungeon? That Rogue Lite is the most similar to Isaac when it comes to variety of items and unlocking
Useless? That’s what people call me lol
Day 1 of mattman deals:
Devils: 1
At the request of matthew the slothful, I will start making list of his deals to see where the data skews. For the sake of simplicity we will only be counting which deal they take first and if they say they are doing one type and then not doing it.
new mattman upload

The keyboard instantly felt more comfortable.
