I was born and still live in Vincennes! My family is actually the family that runs the Harrison House and I get to help in the events they host. I love living in Vincennes with all the history that's there. 😊
I have black and white pictures of my parents in the 1950’s, along the waterfront, long before I was born. I’ve continued to come back since Dad brought us to the rendezvous, back in the late 1970’s. Such a wonderful place of deep history, beauty and memories! 🙂
Many years ago and many miles behind me, I was born in Vincennes and attended VU. Most of the friends of my youth and my first love lie in the town or somewhere in Knox County. Under California skies they pass through the nights, reminding me of what was and will never be again.
It’s a weird feeling, going to where you grew up, and all the houses on your street are filled with strangers. Three of my childhood friends have passed away, as well as all the homeowners I knew. But memories, I will always have. 🙂

My sincere pleasure! I’ve been here many times, since I was in my early 20’s, and just as you mentioned, there’s a certain feeling here, that’s hard to explain. It’s a certain loneliness, hopefulness, and it’s like an unseen past is still playing out, all around you. I live several hours away, but made 4 trips to catch the right light, and paint Vincennes in all its glory, just as I’ve always known it. 🙂

I believe it was 1976. But in my 20’s, I remember visiting, with my Mother. It was absolutely deserted, quiet, serene. We were near the water, and a pleasant, but no doubt lonely, college girl spoke with us. It was like only the three of us existed, in the entire town. I’ll always remember it.

I know exactly how you feel. I was born and raised in Frankfort for 11 years than another year in Tell City while Dad was in Korea and have a BS degree from Ball State U. Many roots in IN. Dad was on the first state All-State Basketball team in 1938 and Mom was in Tell City in 1937 when the big flood on the Ohio River. Sunny, blue sky, green grass, fresh air, beautiful colors, and majestic monuments. It took me 4 trips to get what I wanted, but as I always say, “Now I can visit, anytime I want, with just one click on my smartphone or computer!” I hope the video brings great memories to many people, while encouraging others to visit. 🙂
I’ve loved Vincennes since Dad took us there in the 1970’s. I wanted to capture every angle in the most beautiful light, blue sky and green grass. I ended up doing at least 6 trips to get it right, a labor of love. When I was in my 20’s, Mom and I had came here on a day trip, when I was getting my life together, and it helped. And on my 31st birthday, my Wife and I came here to reflect on a future, that included a baby on the way, but would not my Mother, whom had stage 4 cancer. It’s a timeless place of healing to me. Vincennes will always be a special place, in all my memories, and I hope the beauty I’ve captured brings back good memories for others!

George Rogers Clark memorial is awe-inspiring. The scale of those paintings is best understood with a human in the photo…or look at the size of the explanatory stands in front of the paintings. Wow
Nice video, Roger! My 5th great grandfathers James A. Brenton and Thomas Walker were at Ft. Sackville and helped Clark take it back for the Americans. Vincennes is a very special place, and I never turn down the chance to visit.
Vincennes and New Harmony have a unique spirit about them, rich with history and fascinating people! I thought it was just me, but I’ve since heard others say the same.
I had a hand in creating the scale model of Fort Sackville in the Visitors Center. Richard Roseberry of Columbus originally scratch built it. It was displayed in just natural wood color for years. Around 2000, I was working for Mr. Roseberry. We went over and got the model, took it to the shop, and I spent about a month painting it, mounting it on the new display board, and I landscaped it. We delivered it back to the center on a cold winter day, where it has been on display since. I just discovered your channel. I have a business of my own in downtown Seymour now and have recently started posting videos of Seymour history. If you are ever in Seymour, look me up!
@@AdventureswithRoger I am on the board for the museum. It is still under construction for another 6 to 8 months, although we were opened a weekend in October and 2 in December. You should check out the visitors center in the old train station on Broadway. They have some good displays on local history.

Hey Roger, Loved the video. I have been to Grouseland and the G.R.C. Memeorial many times, but not to every spot you profiled. I see that the military museum has massively expanded and upgraded since I was last there over 15 years ago, when it was in a single building. You have given me some new stuff to check out on my next trip there.
Thanks Joe! I tried to do Vincennes some justice. It really is one of my favorite places, and many people haven’t even heard of it. Dad took us to the rendezvous back in 1976, and then Mom and I returned when I was in my 20’s. But it was only this year that I visited the military museum, and it is epic! The lady at the desk said that it started with a man getting toy soldiers as a kid, and he just kept collecting more and more military items.

Graduated from Vincennes 1982. Wow! Have things changed. I did love the historical sites. I always had a feeling of awe when I looked at the memorial. It was absolutely beautiful. Now I feel like I need to do a road trip! 😂
Glad to bring back good memories! I made 4 trips (2 hours one way) to get the sky and lighting where I wanted it. I wanted it to be like that first time I saw it, one Saturday morning in the spring, some 30 years ago. Hopefully that beauty shines through for people that watch it. 🙂
I went to college there back in 1991-92 and the campus buildings looked nothing like they do in this film. Wow, how things have changed. I need to go back and see all the changes myself, there incredible.
I just saw the French student buildings this year! They have up to three bedrooms and are a lot more comfortable than a cramped freshman dorm, with two beds. The colors and architecture really pop!

Even though I am from Southwestern Ohio, our two states share a lot of cross over history. I was born in Springfield, Ohio which is in Clark County. Just to the west of the city out on the Old National Road is George Rogers Clark State Park. That man sure got around for his day. I didn't realize that Red Skelton was from Vincennes. I grew up watching his TV show as a kid. I loved him and his many characters. I got to see him do a live show in the late 1970s in Savannah, Georgia. That military museum looks like a must see. My connection with Indiana got stronger later in my life because towards the end of his working life, my dad owned a successful manufacturing company in Richmond. Also when we had bought a very big boat that we ran on The Ohio River, I came to spend a lot of time in southeastern Indiana in those river towns. I didn't even get to scratch the surface of the history of the area in my explorations of this part of Indiana. I wish that I had been able to do more but your videos about the river towns I love because you have done that for me. Please keep these videos coming. You do a great job. I live full time in Florida now, but these videos make me want to come back north, in the warm months, to do some more "bushwhacking" across southern Indiana.
Lots of common factors with Ohio and Indiana, from Shawnees, to William Henry Harrison, to other common historical figures! I’ve really enjoyed these last 5 years, filming along the Ohio River! The only big town I haven’t published is New Albany, because I wanted to get everything perfect about it. But, I finished filming last month, hope to get it out in the next few months. The whole journey, from Lawrenceburg to Mount Vernon was one of the best things I’ve ever done!

Trina, please accept a virtual hug from me! I do these videos for lots of reasons. I want to provide ideas for family getaways, that aren’t too expensive and creates memories for a lifetime. To show places a person can go, when the world gets too much to handle. I create adventures and retell legends, that anyone can enjoy from a comfortable chair, and feel like they’re a part of it. But I also create time capsules, virtual tours that take people where they cannot go, and it’s my solid honor. My cousin is in assisted living, and I try to bring her, and others that have limited or no mobility, memories and new places to ponder. My son is both autistic and in a wheelchair. And every time I can bring him a video, that puts a smile on his face, making him feel he got to go somewhere, impossible in real life, is a good day. Someday, I will not be able to jump in a car and see my favorite places, or explore somewhere new. These videos will then be all I have to remember, of that other life I had. But while I have the energy and ability to do it, I will be the eyes of others. It is my humble honor, and I’m thrilled I could take you where you wanted to go! Did anyone tell you about the Escape Tunnel in the basement of Grouseland Mansion that runs from the basement of the Mansion over to and then underneath the Wabash River and ends at it’s exit on the Illinois side of the river? I was born & raised in Vincennes living there the first 39 years of my life, also both my parents were born & raised in Vincennes (infact many generations of my family on both sides Cardinal’s, Bahr’s, Howder’s & Brown’s were) anyway the Tunnel is still there but the entrance is locked and off limits to the public now and has been for my whole life time but when my parents were kids you could go down to see and even go into the Tunnel, dad said the guides when he was a kid would always tell visitors that William Henry Harrison had it built as an escape incase of Native American attacks. Sorry for the long essay of a comment, I just always thought it was a cool tidbit that not everyone knows about. I Love history and the channel by the way keep up the great content and thank you for the amazing work you’re giving all of us Bravo 5 Gold Stars 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟
@@AdventureswithRoger If & when you go back also ask if someone can tell you the History/Legend of Alice Of Old Vincennes, the is who the High School Sports teams are named after (The Vincennes Lincoln Alice’s) She was a Madam/Prostitute that ran a Brothel that is today a bunch of Doctors offices & a place to get lab work done for the Hospital it’s named “Vincennes Medical Center” it’s a giant White 3 story building that takes up like a 1/2 of a block it’s on 1st Street about 2 blocks from the George Rogers Clark Memorial (incase you want to google map it) it’s the original building that she ran her Brothel out of, I always found it kind of wild and cool that the sports teams were and still are named after her. It doesn’t seem weird unless you know the backstory of who we are named after and who she was, I would always kinda chuckle when the girls teams would play and the announcers would say (Folks give a round of applause for your Lady Alice’s) 😬🤣

Hi Larry, I went to school in VC with a Joe Brown, graduated LHS 1961. Look back now and think of the of VC as a wonderful place to grow up in. I think The Tunnel you refer to has never been proved. There have been a number of archaeological investigations (did they ever use GPR?) that have never revealed such a tunnel. (I would love it to be true!) The ladies of the DAR there used to tell the story and point to the bricked supposed entry as I recall. As kids we would go down to the Wabash and search for the other end of the tunnel, it was great fun, but, alas, nothing - why we expected no one else had thought of that I can only blame youthful ignorance. Thanks for the memory!
Fun fact about Ft. Knox II. Zachary Taylor was stationed there and his daughter Sarah Knox was born there. She later became the first wife of Jefferson Davis.

I was born and raised in Vincennes. I don’t live there currently, but I have to say, I really love your video. Makes me proud of my little town. There is a really amazing old theater there on Main St. that they recently renovated, it’s called The Pantheon. It is worth a trip back just to see that building. It has tons of history. A lot of the big names from back in the day came through there. I’m loving your channel btw! Keep up the good work. P.S. I was regretfully one of those kids that slid down Sugar Loaf Mound on a sled. I so wish I could go back and stop myself from doing that.

I'm a VU Grad & VU was a 4 year university .. But Spanish American war depleted young men & it became a 2 year university. I had great times their after returning from Vietnam .. Ya missed 2 things .. Vincennes is the Birth Place of Sigma Pi International Fraternity in 1897 & Judge Curtis J. SHAKE, who was Indiana Supreme Court Judge & Lead Judge at WWII NAZI Nuremberg War Trials .. Sigma Pi is the only Fraternity allowed on a Jr. College Campus, it's Fraternity House is on Campus. VU Libary is named after Judge Shake has a display of the life of Judge Shake.

Thank you. All my family is from the Vincennes area. I grew up in Bloomington. We made many trips there when I was growing up to visit relatives. As an adult, my family makes trips there to work on old cemeteries. I love all of that area! FYI Francis Vigo is buried in Greenlawn Cemetery. Not far from his statue.

I live far south, down by New Albany. I can be at the Ohio River, or historic Corydon, within 23 minutes, on a good day! If you’ve never been to Corydon, I think you’d love it!
@@AdventureswithRoger you ever been to the mississinewa 1812 event? Largest 1812 reenactment in country and new longhouse me n a few others recently finished is 4th largest in US!! Really up to snuff on keeping all participants period correct. Been going on 33 yrs with myself participating as a Metis come to trade with local Miami. Really exciting is last 2 yrs they've started doing(twice a weekend, so far) a rendition of the actual accounts that happened here instead of just a rendition of any random 1812 period battle which is what's been going on last 30 some yrs! Many other events and period attractions besides the 2 daily battles and least a hundred other ppl like me just camping period style(I come for trading for real lol) as well as almost a hundred vendors all along the mississinewa river a few stones throws from where actual event took place. Normally it's public recreation land(hunting/fishing) except a weekend in October. Sorry so long and could keep going but if you're into Indiana history like it seems(I love it) you really gotta look into it this next fall, I believe late Sept next year I heard which'll be a first, HOPE TO SEE YA THERE!

@@AdventureswithRoger and me too Corydon. There any events throughout the year make it worth more of the gas? There's also the 7 pillars downriver further which is 6 caverns into a very large n long rock face which makes one river bank. It was said to have been used by Miami for ceremonies, court, and executions! Believe I heard one had a white man's trading post in it and the land on other side is still owned by the Miami tribe of Indians headquartered in Peru IN. more Indian history like also Francis Slocum was found where mississinewa reservoir Beach is now and her Miami husband deaf man! Just learned that a few months ago myself but know about finding her Indiana and a road I take a lot called Francis Slocum trail. Enough different history close to make a few videos. Also look up the Indian legend of hanging rock!!!! A woman,2 men, a fight to the death on top (80+ ft?) And a suicide... Very moving story n won't ruin it here for ya but HANGING ROCK! Spread our history brother n be safe. A TON in less then 20sq miles!
@@J.A.Smith2397 You have sold me the goods! Corydon has a pioneer re-enactment, I believe in September. However, people working at the Squire Boone Village dress up all summer and demonstrate candle making / other pioneer things. They often have docents that dress up at the Battle of Corydon park, to tell the story of Morgan’s raid. I have a friend that’s the president of the Harrison County Historical Society, and she dresses up in the fall to give tours of William Henry Harrison’s cabin, in town. I hope to get a comprehensive Corydon video out in November or December!

Editorial note, the music is painfully loud. Otherwise, great job. My Doyle grandparents were married in the Cathedral. My grandmother hailed from a Dutch family two generations in America, harness and saddle makers in 19th Century Vincennes!
Some other people have told me the music is overpowering. I use a Dolby cinema style field, can’t predict how it will hit someone’s speakers or ear cans. Some computer speakers / ear cans (Especially “Skull Candy” and “Beats”brands) over-emphasize / color bass: I can’t predict what people have. Very cool that your Grandparents were married at the cathedral! When I was there, they were setting up for one. They still gave me full access. 🙂
Nice, but ... French settled her in the early 1700's, not the 1600's. Also, Pyramid Mound is a separate mound off of Ramsey Road, belonging to Knox County Parks. Sugarloaf Mound belongs to the Vincennes State Historic Sites, and it *not* also called Pyramid.
The first French fur trader outpost was established in 1702, but a few French trappers were already there in the late 1600’s. When making the film, I found references to both sugarloaf and pyramid mound being at Vincennes. Pyramid mound is officially designated 12k14, mapped to coordinate 38°40'14"N 87°30'22"W. If you put that in a GPS, it’ll take you directly to sugarloaf mound.
And...along with several other commenters who went to Vincennes University...I almost was one scheduled to attend in the Fall quarter of 1970...I decided not to go there but try to pursue a career in radio broadcasting with a trade school (Career Academy). Oh well...wish I had attended V.U. ( which was a junior college way back then my folks and I toured the campus back in April of 1969 when I was 18. Anyway...Vincennes is the birthplace of my cousin, Red Skelton. My dad was first cousin to Red. His father, my grandfather, Fred W. Foster, was Red's uncle, who was a twin brother to grandfather, Red's father. Watching this episode of travels in Indiana, I wish my last journey to Indy via southwest Indiana back in late September of 2021 had included Vincennes - especially Red's museum. Next time to Indy, it's a must! Roger...the music selection pieces are beautiful! I really liked the selection in the episode you did on the "hidden silver mine search". The military museum...cool! Reminds me of Fort Benning's in Columbus, Georgia. This one looks even better than Benning's I think. Thanks for this episode...from the banks of the Walbsh. Didn't read all of the comments, having seen how some others have contributed, I hasten to add something I recall from Grouseland was a hole in a shutter allegedly made by someone firing a weapon at Harrison or his house anyway. I lived in Knox County just outside Vincennes for my 4th grade year. At the time, that was the year that they taught state history. I didn't realize how lucky I was to live so close to so much history.
We went on history field trips, when I was in elementary, and I’ve always loved and appreciated History because of it. I blame the total disrespect and unpatriotic attitudes, in this county, from a lack of solid history lessons, at an early age.
Highly suggest going to the visitor center and watching the short film about Clark. It’s very well done and gave me a deeper appreciation of his boldness and sacrifice.
I struggled with that. Used an online French translator that said it then I mimicked the pronunciation. As I’m no a French speaker, I’ll have to take your word for it!

Vincennes is home to Vincennes University, Vincennes-Lincoln High school, right next to the George Rogers Clark Memorial is Vincennes Rivet. Vincennes does have a main street and has a Walmart, JayC (Kroger), and Kohls plus countless other stores.
Main St. is thriving, shops, restaurants, art galleries, etc. we feature many events on Main St. such as the Farmers Market, Art events, parades, festivals, etc…
TONS of history, particularly in Southern Indiana, where people floating down the Ohio River had to leave the water, due to the rapids. Many either settled in the Louisville area or Clarksville, gradually spreading out to the beautiful lands west. In December I hope to publish segments on New Albany and Corydon: both paint a great picture of Indiana’s early history.
Sugarloaf mound and Pyramid mound are two separate burial mounds located in Vincennes. Pyramid mound is located at US 41 and Main Street, off in the trees.
I struggled with that one, as Edward Cox seemed to describe several mounds, but only one was clearly identified online. Do you have a street address or GPS coordinate?
@AdventureswithRoger if you use Google Earth, you can zoom in to the south of the mound and find a silver car parked at the entrance. There is only enough room for parking, then a 150-yard hike to the mound. It is covered by tree growth currently, but that keeps it from eroding. Too many vandals go back there to tear up the place with dirt bikes and such. There's supposedly over 200+ mounds over by Edwardsport, towards Westphalia on 67. If you're back in the area, let me know!
Thank-you, Shane! I see it! What’s odd about this and Sugar Loaf, is that neither are close to a waterway, like the other big ones I’ve seen in Indiana. But, the Wabash isn’t real far away! Geologist Edward Cox said the biggest mounds he’d found in Indiana, were at Vincennes, and I walked away wondering if only one was left. I truly appreciate you sending me the coordinates! 🙂
@AdventureswithRoger I've got some very interesting information to show you then! Something I've been working on for 2 years now. The flood water in the area was emense back then! Back to Google Earth for reference, if you look north of Vincennes at Russellville, IL, you'll notice just south of the town the river had changed at one point, running southwest, all the way to Lawrenceville, IL. Across Allison prairie was flood waters, creating an enormous lake, one we recently seen in 2008 due to the flood. Thanks to man made efforts by digging out new channels for the Wabash and building levees, we do not see this seasonal 'lake' anymore. If you come to Vincennes during winter, usually around late January to February, you'll notice a massive migration of water fowls. Millions of snow and Canadian geese, cranes, and even pelicans stop in Vincennes, close to the area of Westport, IL. Between this migration and the Bison back then, this was prime hunting grounds! After the fall of Cahokia, there were tribes that set up outside Lawrenceville, Illinois, literally on the banks of this ancient river. Illinois University had a professor come to Lawrenceville just 2 years ago to map the site. It is extraordinary, and making my claim of this ancient waterway come to light. It would explain a lot of anomalies in the area. I can send you mapping info if you'd like?
The problem is that I have no idea what kind of speakers people use. If they have deep bass response, the music will overpower the narration. I keep experimenting with lowering the overall music tracks.
Yes they did. In Bedford even, their historical heritage was a Monon line that went right through their town, and passed the courthouse. I remember watching cars scatter to make way for the train! Even though the train hadn’t ran in years, they left the rail line in the road. They finally covered it with asphalt, earlier this year.

I have black and white pictures of my parents in the 1950’s, along the waterfront, long before I was born. I’ve continued to come back since Dad brought us to the rendezvous, back in the late 1970’s. Such a wonderful place of deep history, beauty and memories! 🙂
Many years ago and many miles behind me, I was born in Vincennes and attended VU. Most of the friends of my youth and my first love lie in the town or somewhere in Knox County. Under California skies they pass through the nights, reminding me of what was and will never be again.
It’s a weird feeling, going to where you grew up, and all the houses on your street are filled with strangers. Three of my childhood friends have passed away, as well as all the homeowners I knew. But memories, I will always have. 🙂

I believe it was 1976. But in my 20’s, I remember visiting, with my Mother. It was absolutely deserted, quiet, serene. We were near the water, and a pleasant, but no doubt lonely, college girl spoke with us. It was like only the three of us existed, in the entire town. I’ll always remember it.

I know exactly how you feel. I was born and raised in Frankfort for 11 years than another year in Tell City while Dad was in Korea and have a BS degree from Ball State U. Many roots in IN. Dad was on the first state All-State Basketball team in 1938 and Mom was in Tell City in 1937 when the big flood on the Ohio River. Vincennes, Decker, Hazelton,Patoka,and Princeton are my old stomping grounds. This brings back memories.
I’ve loved Vincennes since Dad took us there in the 1970’s. I wanted to capture every angle in the most beautiful light, blue sky and green grass. I ended up doing at least 6 trips to get it right, a labor of love.
When I was in my 20’s, Mom and I had came here on a day trip, when I was getting my life together, and it helped. And on my 31st birthday, my Wife and I came here to reflect on a future, that included a baby on the way, but would not my Mother, whom had stage 4 cancer. It’s a timeless place of healing to me.
Vincennes will always be a special place, in all my memories, and I hope the beauty I’ve captured brings back good memories for others!

Nice video, Roger! My 5th great grandfathers James A. Brenton and Thomas Walker were at Ft. Sackville and helped Clark take it back for the Americans. Vincennes is a very special place, and I never turn down the chance to visit.
Vincennes and New Harmony have a unique spirit about them, rich with history and fascinating people! I thought it was just me, but I’ve since heard others say the same.
I had a hand in creating the scale model of Fort Sackville in the Visitors Center. Richard Roseberry of Columbus originally scratch built it. It was displayed in just natural wood color for years. Around 2000, I was working for Mr. Roseberry. We went over and got the model, took it to the shop, and I spent about a month painting it, mounting it on the new display board, and I landscaped it. We delivered it back to the center on a cold winter day, where it has been on display since. I just discovered your channel. I have a business of my own in downtown Seymour now and have recently started posting videos of Seymour history. If you are ever in Seymour, look me up!
The closest segment I’ve filmed near Seymour, was about Fort Vallonia. I didn’t have near enough information, and I couldn’t get in the museum.
@@AdventureswithRoger I am on the board for the museum. It is still under construction for another 6 to 8 months, although we were opened a weekend in October and 2 in December. You should check out the visitors center in the old train station on Broadway. They have some good displays on local history.

I see that the military museum has massively expanded and upgraded since I was last there over 15 years ago, when it was in a single building. Dad took us to the rendezvous back in 1976, and then Mom and I returned when I was in my 20’s. But it was only this year that I visited the military museum, and it is epic! The lady at the desk said that it started with a man getting toy soldiers as a kid, and he just kept collecting more and more military items.

Public school only had us memorize names and dates and not think about anything, the wars, actual pyramids in our country, mounds, etc.
Graduated from Vincennes 1982. Wow! Have things changed. I did love the historical sites. I always had a feeling of awe when I looked at the memorial. It was absolutely beautiful. Now I feel like I need to do a road trip! 😂
Glad to bring back good memories! I made 4 trips (2 hours one way) to get the sky and lighting where I wanted it. I wanted it to be like that first time I saw it, one Saturday morning in the spring, some 30 years ago. Hopefully that beauty shines through for people that watch it. 🙂
I went to college there back in 1991-92 and the campus buildings looked nothing like they do in this film.

I just saw the French student buildings this year! They have up to three bedrooms and are a lot more comfortable than a cramped freshman dorm, with two beds. The colors and architecture really pop!

Even though I am from Southwestern Ohio, our two states share a lot of cross over history. I was born in Springfield, Ohio which is in Clark County. Just to the west of the city out on the Old National Road is George Rogers Clark State Park. That man sure got around for his day. I didn't realize that Red Skelton was from Vincennes. I grew up watching his TV show as a kid. I loved him and his many characters. I got to see him do a live show in the late 1970s in Savannah, Georgia. That military museum looks like a must see. My connection with Indiana got stronger later in my life because towards the end of his working life, my dad owned a successful manufacturing company in Richmond. Also when we had bought a very big boat that we ran on The Ohio River, I came to spend a lot of time in southeastern Indiana in those river towns. I didn't even get to scratch the surface of the history of the area in my explorations of this part of Indiana. I wish that I had been able to do more but your videos about the river towns I love because you have done that for me. Please keep these videos coming. You do a great job. I live full time in Florida now, but these videos make me want to come back north, in the warm months, to do some more "bushwhacking" across southern Indiana.

I’ve really enjoyed these last 5 years, filming along the Ohio River! The only big town I haven’t published is New Albany, because I wanted to get everything perfect about it. But, I finished filming last month, hope to get it out in the next few months. The whole journey, from Lawrenceburg to Mount Vernon was one of the best things I’ve ever done!

Trina, please accept a virtual hug from me! I do these videos for lots of reasons. I want to provide ideas for family getaways, that aren’t too expensive and creates memories for a lifetime. To show places a person can go, when the world gets too much to handle. I create adventures and retell legends, that anyone can enjoy from a comfortable chair, and feel like they’re a part of it. But I also create time capsules, virtual tours that take people where they cannot go, and it’s my solid honor.
My cousin is in assisted living, and I try to bring her, and others that have limited or no mobility, memories and new places to ponder. My son is both autistic and in a wheelchair. And every time I can bring him a video, that puts a smile on his face, making him feel he got to go somewhere, impossible in real life, is a good day.
Someday, I will not be able to jump in a car and see my favorite places, or explore somewhere new. These videos will then be all I have to remember, of that other life I had. But while I have the energy and ability to do it, I will be the eyes of others. It is my humble honor, and I’m thrilled I could take you where you wanted to go! If you think of other places you’d like to see, please let me know! 🙂

Did anyone tell you about the Escape Tunnel in the basement of Grouseland Mansion that runs from the basement of the Mansion over to and then underneath the Wabash River and ends at it’s exit on the Illinois side of the river?
I was born & raised in Vincennes living there the first 39 years of my life, also both my parents were born & raised in Vincennes (infact many generations of my family on both sides Cardinal’s, Bahr’s, Howder’s & Brown’s were) anyway the Tunnel is still there but the entrance is locked and off limits to the public now and has been for my whole life time but when my parents were kids you could go down to see and even go into the Tunnel, dad said the guides when he was a kid would always tell visitors that William Henry Harrison had it built as an escape incase of Native American attacks. Sorry for the long essay of a comment, I just always thought it was a cool tidbit that not everyone knows about. I Love history and the channel by the way keep up the great content and thank you for the amazing work you’re giving all of us Bravo 5 Gold Stars 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟

@@AdventureswithRoger If & when you go back also ask if someone can tell you the History/Legend of Alice Of Old Vincennes, the is who the High School Sports teams are named after (The Vincennes Lincoln Alice’s) She was a Madam/Prostitute that ran a Brothel that is today a bunch of Doctors offices & a place to get lab work done for the Hospital it’s named “Vincennes Medical Center” it’s a giant White 3 story building that takes up like a 1/2 of a block it’s on 1st Street about 2 blocks from the George Rogers Clark Memorial (incase you want to google map it) it’s the original building that she ran her Brothel out of, I always found it kind of wild and cool that the sports teams were and still are named after her. It doesn’t seem weird unless you know the backstory of who we are named after and who she was, I would always kinda chuckle when the girls teams would play and the announcers would say (Folks give a round of applause for your Lady Alice’s) 😬🤣

Hi Larry, I went to school in VC with a Joe Brown, graduated LHS 1961. Look back now and think of the of VC as a wonderful place to grow up in. I think The Tunnel you refer to has never been proved. There have been a number of archaeological investigations (did they ever use GPR?) that have never revealed such a tunnel. (I would love it to be true!) The ladies of the DAR there used to tell the story and point to the bricked supposed entry as I recall. As kids we would go down to the Wabash and search for the other end of the tunnel, it was great fun, but, alas, nothing - why we expected no one else had thought of that I can only blame youthful ignorance. Thanks for the memory!
I can confirm we did use to sled down Sugar Loaf but we called it Indian Mound more than anything

I lived on a property that had a mound in vincennes. The Emert family's place. Now a bank owns the land i think.
I visited the Sugarloaf mound. Some say there is a second mound, called the pyramid mound, but if you look it up online, they are one and the same.
Fun fact about Ft. Knox II. Zachary Taylor was stationed there and his daughter Sarah Knox was born there. She later became the first wife of Jefferson Davis.

There is a really amazing old theater there on Main St. that they recently renovated, it’s called The Pantheon. It is worth a trip back just to see that building. It has tons of history. I'm a VU Grad & VU was a 4 year university .. But Spanish American war depleted young men & it became a 2 year university. I had great times their after returning from Vietnam .. Ya missed 2 things .. Vincennes is the Birth Place of Sigma Pi International Fraternity in 1897 & Judge Curtis J. SHAKE, who was Indiana Supreme Court Judge & Lead Judge at WWII NAZI Nuremberg War Trials .. Sigma Pi is the only Fraternity allowed on a Jr. College Campus, it's Fraternity House is on Campus. VU Libary is named after Judge Shake has a display of the life of Judge Shake.

As an adult, my family makes trips there to work on old cemeteries. I love all of that area! FYI Francis Vigo is buried in Greenlawn Cemetery. Not far from his statue.
I have so many fond memories of Vincennes. I have black and white pictures of my parents, sitting along the Wabash, in the late 1950’s, on a date before they were married. I’ve went there with my Mother, after Dad passed away. I’ve went with my wife on my birthday, and by myself. Vincennes is always timeless and special! 🙂

I live far south, down by New Albany. I can be at the Ohio River, or historic Corydon, within 23 minutes, on a good day! If you’ve never been to Corydon, I think you’d love it!
@@AdventureswithRoger you ever been to the mississinewa 1812 event? Largest 1812 reenactment in country and new longhouse me n a few others recently finished is 4th largest in US!! Really up to snuff on keeping all participants period correct. Been going on 33 yrs with myself participating as a Metis come to trade with local Miami. Really exciting is last 2 yrs they've started doing(twice a weekend, so far) a rendition of the actual accounts that happened here instead of just a rendition of any random 1812 period battle which is what's been going on last 30 some yrs! Many other events and period attractions besides the 2 daily battles and least a hundred other ppl like me just camping period style(I come for trading for real lol) as well as almost a hundred vendors all along the mississinewa river a few stones throws from where actual event took place. Normally it's public recreation land(hunting/fishing) except a weekend in October. Sorry so long and could keep going but if you're into Indiana history like it seems(I love it) you really gotta look into it this next fall, I believe late Sept next year I heard which'll be a first, HOPE TO SEE YA THERE!

@@AdventureswithRoger and me too Corydon. There any events throughout the year make it worth more of the gas? There's also the 7 pillars downriver further which is 6 caverns into a very large n long rock face which makes one river bank. It was said to have been used by Miami for ceremonies, court, and executions! Believe I heard one had a white man's trading post in it and the land on other side is still owned by the Miami tribe of Indians headquartered in Peru IN. more Indian history like also Francis Slocum was found where mississinewa reservoir Beach is now and her Miami husband deaf man! Just learned that a few months ago myself but know about finding her Indiana and a road I take a lot called Francis Slocum trail. Enough different history close to make a few videos. Also look up the Indian legend of hanging rock!!!! A woman,2 men, a fight to the death on top (80+ ft?) And a suicide... Very moving story n won't ruin it here for ya but HANGING ROCK! Spread our history brother n be safe. A TON in less then 20sq miles!

Corydon has a pioneer re-enactment, I believe in September. However, people working at the Squire Boone Village dress up all summer and demonstrate candle making / other pioneer things. They often have docents that dress up at the Battle of Corydon park, to tell the story of Morgan’s raid. I have a friend that’s the president of the Harrison County Historical Society, and she dresses up in the fall to give tours of William Henry Harrison’s cabin, in town.
I hope to get a comprehensive Corydon video out in November or December!

Editorial note, the music is painfully loud. Otherwise, great job. My Doyle grandparents were married in the Cathedral. My grandmother hailed from a Dutch family two generations in America, harness and saddle makers in 19th Century Vincennes!
Some other people have told me the music is overpowering. I use a Dolby cinema style field, can’t predict how it will hit someone’s speakers or ear cans. Some computer speakers / ear cans (Especially “Skull Candy” and “Beats”brands) over-emphasize / color bass: I can’t predict what people have.
Very cool that your Grandparents were married at the cathedral! When I was there, they were setting up for one. They still gave me full access. 🙂

Nice, but ... French settled her in the early 1700's, not the 1600's. Also, Pyramid Mound is a separate mound off of Ramsey Road, belonging to Knox County Parks. Sugarloaf Mound belongs to the Vincennes State Historic Sites, and it *not* also called Pyramid.
The first French fur trader outpost was established in 1702, but a few French trappers were already there in the late 1600’s.
When making the film, I found references to both sugarloaf and pyramid mound being at Vincennes. Pyramid mound is officially designated 12k14, mapped to coordinate 38°40'14"N 87°30'22"W. If you put that in a GPS, it’ll take you directly to sugarloaf mound.
And...along with several other commenters who went to Vincennes University...I almost was one scheduled to attend in the Fall quarter of 1970...I decided not to go there but try to pursue a career in radio broadcasting with a trade school (Career Academy). Oh well...wish I had attended V.U. ( which was a junior college way back then my folks and I toured the campus back in April of 1969 when I was 18.
Anyway...Vincennes is the birthplace of my cousin, Red Skelton. My dad was first cousin to Red. His father, my grandfather, Fred W. Foster, was Red's uncle, who was a twin brother to grandfather, Red's father.
Watching this episode of travels in Indiana, I wish my last journey to Indy via southwest Indiana back in late September of 2021 had included Vincennes - especially Red's museum. Next time to Indy, it's a must!

Didn't read all of the comments, having seen how some others have contributed, I hasten to add something I recall from Grouseland was a hole in a shutter allegedly made by someone firing a weapon at Harrison or his house anyway.

It took me three trips to get the lighting I wanted, but now I can push play and relive Vincennes, anytime I want! Hopefully, people that also have decades of Vincennes memories, can do the same! I lived in Knox County just outside Vincennes for my 4th grade year. At the time, that was the year that they taught state history. I didn't realize how lucky I was to live so close to so much history.
We went on history field trips, when I was in elementary, and I’ve always loved and appreciated History because of it. I blame the total disrespect and unpatriotic attitudes, in this county, from a lack of solid history lessons, at an early age.
Been to the military museum, Red Skelton's museum, but not to the Gerorge Rogers Clark Memorial. That is still on our bucket list to do.
Highly suggest going to the visitor center and watching the short film about Clark. It’s very well done and gave me a deeper appreciation of his boldness and sacrifice.
I had walked around the George Rogers Clark museum and sat by the river but hadn't seen the other sites there. Thank you for sharing

As a tourist myself, I both miss things that locals think are obvious, and find things that locals didn’t even know about. It’s all part of the fun!

Vincennes is home to Vincennes University, Vincennes-Lincoln High school, right next to the George Rogers Clark Memorial is Vincennes Rivet. Vincennes does have a main street and has a Walmart, JayC (Kroger), and Kohls plus countless other stores.
Its an actual town, albeit, very old town.
Main St. is thriving, shops, restaurants, art galleries, etc. we feature many events on Main St. such as the Farmers Market, Art events, parades, festivals, etc…
Thee FIRST capital of Indiana!
Nice overview of Vincennes and its history. My ancestors were part of the action since its beginnings. I spent many quality years there in the past.

TONS of history, particularly in Southern Indiana, where people floating down the Ohio River had to leave the water, due to the rapids. Many either settled in the Louisville area or Clarksville, gradually spreading out to the beautiful lands west. In December I hope to publish segments on New Albany and Corydon: both paint a great picture of Indiana’s early history.
Sugarloaf mound and Pyramid mound are two separate burial mounds located in Vincennes. Pyramid mound is located at US 41 and Main Street, off in the trees.
I struggled with that one, as Edward Cox seemed to describe several mounds, but only one was clearly identified online. Do you have a street address or GPS coordinate?

@AdventureswithRoger if you use Google Earth, you can zoom in to the south of the mound and find a silver car parked at the entrance. There is only enough room for parking, then a 150-yard hike to the mound. It is covered by tree growth currently, but that keeps it from eroding. Too many vandals go back there to tear up the place with dirt bikes and such.
There's supposedly over 200+ mounds over by Edwardsport, towards Westphalia on 67. If you're back in the area, let me know!
Thank-you, Shane! I see it! What’s odd about this and Sugar Loaf, is that neither are close to a waterway, like the other big ones I’ve seen in Indiana. But, the Wabash isn’t real far away!
Geologist Edward Cox said the biggest mounds he’d found in Indiana, were at Vincennes, and I walked away wondering if only one was left. I truly appreciate you sending me the coordinates! 🙂
@AdventureswithRoger I've got some very interesting information to show you then! Something I've been working on for 2 years now.
The flood water in the area was emense back then! Back to Google Earth for reference, if you look north of Vincennes at Russellville, IL, you'll notice just south of the town the river had changed at one point, running southwest, all the way to Lawrenceville, IL. Across Allison prairie was flood waters, creating an enormous lake, one we recently seen in 2008 due to the flood. Thanks to man made efforts by digging out new channels for the Wabash and building levees, we do not see this seasonal 'lake' anymore. If you come to Vincennes during winter, usually around late January to February, you'll notice a massive migration of water fowls. Millions of snow and Canadian geese, cranes, and even pelicans stop in Vincennes, close to the area of Westport, IL. Between this migration and the Bison back then, this was prime hunting grounds! After the fall of Cahokia, there were tribes that set up outside Lawrenceville, Illinois, literally on the banks of this ancient river. Illinois University had a professor come to Lawrenceville just 2 years ago to map the site. It is extraordinary, and making my claim of this ancient waterway come to light. It would explain a lot of anomalies in the area. I can send you mapping info if you'd like?

The problem is that I have no idea what kind of speakers people use. If they have deep bass response, the music will overpower the narration. I keep experimenting with lowering the overall music tracks.

Yes they did. In Bedford even, their historical heritage was a Monon line that went right through their town, and passed the courthouse. I remember watching cars scatter to make way for the train! Even though the train hadn’t ran in years, they left the rail line in the road. They finally covered it with asphalt, earlier this year.
