"Dr. Issac Yankem ... Because I guesse. Vince had a bad dentist appointment that week" - Jim Cornette
"The Traveling Man" - always on vacation sending in vignettes.
Reminds me of a YT video I saw with some guys doing promos as their would be personas..IF..they were real wrestlers some dude called “The Vacation” at the end of his promo he tossed his laptop into the tropical waters because fuck it he’ll buy another one he’s “The Vacation” 😂
Jokes on Brian, Vince would have come out in speedos and wrestler as a slippy lazy wrewtler who gets beat, essentially Orange Cassidy if he was booked logically
(in Howard Finkel's voice) From Around The World, weighing in at 230 pounds, The Predator From Paris, The Milan Mauler, The Terrorist From Timbuktu, The Bali Brawler... "The Traveling Man", BRIAAAAAAN LAAAAAAAAST!
It's a good thing I wasn't drinking my water when Brian said that, because I would have done an epic spit take.
@@turkishjanitor3666 Does The Stalker Barry Windham do a run-in?
Yeah but back then he was at least throwing everything against the wall to see what would stick. After he beat WCW and the Attitude era ended you could clearly tell he stopped caring. In 1996 you could tell he was still heavily invested, good or bad.
Remember watching WWF Superstars in ‘96 and one minute you’d see Austin, then the next it would be the Goon and T.L Hopper. Truly a strange time. To think what the company would go on to become inside the space of two short years.
and then how it would make a joke of the whole business of the next 20 years.

@@ohiopigeon exactly 😅
@@sweetpetergeda can you try that comment again in English, please? I don't speak inbred rube. "Austin won't important in 1996"???? WTF does that even mean???
I remember when WWF had that call in show LiveWire, someone called in and asked why they were bringing in wrestlers and changing their names/gimmicks specifically Tom Brandi/Sal Sincere. I remember they cut that guy off quick lol
@@James-if3kc I remember that. Jim Ross on commentary then said, "I'm a _baaad_ man!"
Barry Windham didn't even get a new name. He became The Stalker.
@@James-if3kc The Stalker is a gimmick, not name.
Isaac Yankem is a name. A dentist is the gimmick.
The Cronkite thing is a common urban legend. According to Yachting Magazine, "Over the course of his life he owned several boats, including a Westsail 42, and Camper & Nicholsons 60, a Sunward 48, and a Hinckley 64 ketch, all named Wyntje, after the first woman to marry a Cronkite in the new world."
A guy whos always on vacation and cant be bothered to show up for his matches might actually get heat
Brock lesnar?
@@James-if3kc Roman does show up for his matches though.
Yeah...the choice to revive the LWO thing is puzzling to me.
It was a niche gimmick from the floundering days of WCW, and even now they had to squeeze Eddie's 'VIVA LA RAZA!" at the start of the theme in order to get a cheap pop out of the crowd, so they're not even cheering for the stable, they're just happy to hear Eddie's voice.
At the end of the day, it was a parody in WCW. Ya, it started as angry Latinos who felt ignored, but it was a parody of the NWO (obviously). Now it's "serious", yet they have done nothing significant. I love all the members but it was lams to just throw the shirt on them.
@@athleticfan33 I wonder if it’s because they aren’t getting the same reaction they got while in NXT so they just came up with the idea to revive the LWO
And they’re probably trying to cater to their Latin audience
@@maxpayne7312 Probably. Why not throw Los Lotharios in as well? They're doing less than nothing atm.
@@James-if3kc Hard to argue with all that.
..ok, but when was the last real cheer not from tape in WWE? Its a snoozefest
0:20 "It *doesn’t* happen more often than it does that way." Very well put. Honestly if Ted didn’t bail for WCW, who knows how long it would have taken for Austin to overcome Vince's blinders on the best way to use him.
"The Goon" was one of the absolute dumbest ideas ever. Why would anybody who isn't a complete idiot show up for a wrestling match with "skates" on his feet, barely able to walk properly (if they were real)? Might as well have a wrestler who walks on stilts or has roller skates on during a match. Or a baseball-themed wrestler who wears a catcher's mitt as a "weapon" for a chokeslam. It's mindboggling how asinine it is.
It's like Vince McMahon had no understanding of how anything in the real world works.
Wild Bill Irwin was a good wrestler as well.
..the real world...like today where 5.0 midgets turn up to win pretend Fights against 300 pound enemies.
He was literally just playing around with these people like they were toys. Giving stupid gimmicks as if these people didn’t have bills to pay
Dibiase injured his neck in Japan, which led to the end of his in-ring career.
As Vince has gotten older he has been boiled down to his true self, bad writing and gimmicks and loving and pushing muscular and/or giant men.
Muscular men has been the draw since way before Vince
Also, demeaning all the Black performers.
@@joe_higachi MIss the point often or always?
@@yoholmes273 you’re the one bringing race into it. Is that the point you always make? 😂😅
@joe_higachi Erroneous statement, you clown fool.
Welcome to real life where Vince is known to be prejudiced and even go so far as dropping the N word live on RAW because he thought it was funny.
I think Vince was more concerned with selling action figures than anything else
Slick was always taller than most of the guys he managed.
Weighed a buck 20
And had the best theme music. Jive soul bro.
You could tell Slick was tall, so he didn't make anyone look small. And Jim is right on DiBiase. Everyone knew he was a wrestler so it didn't matter that he was a big guy.
Maybe not in the 90's, cant remember, but seeing Terry Taylor, a legend, coming to the ring screaming cockadoodledoo with a red stripe on his head was the most embarrasing jawdropping moment at the time. Vince on drugs. Period.
If you think Terry Taylor is a legend now, fine, that’s your perspective. But he certainly was not yet a legend when they gave him the Red Rooster gimmick in 88-89. If they had not saddled him with that stupid gimmick he would have had the opportunity to make a name for himself in WWF. He almost certainly could have feuded with Rick Rude, Bret Hart, or Mr. Perfect for the IC belt.
It’s funny to hear Bruce try to defend the gimmick. Idk who it was but someone had a problem with Taylor’s ego because it was said that he felt he thought of himself as good as Flair. So Vince supposedly wanted him to be like a rooster, the cock of the walk or some shit. You have to UA-cam Bruce’s video on it to get a better understanding of the stupid idea behind it. He definitely could’ve been IC midcard type and not jobber guy.
@@ItwasMenotU1234 For that Wrestling's Most series they did the 5 worst gimmicks and I think the Rooster was #2, and EVERYONE in the vid said Taylor was exactly the sort of guy that would get heat with the office for not knowing how to shut his damn mouth and get buried with a dumb gimmick. The vid is on YT, probably on the Kayfabe Commentaries channel.
@@ItwasMenotU1234 When he debuted he was a heel with a Flair style gimmick. It was only later that he turned face and made the rooster comb out of his hair and started acting like a rooster. I think there could be some truth in him not understanding the gimmick and taking it too literally, so they made him a comedy face.

In 1992, grunge music came along and killed any cultural touchpoint Vince had with pop culture. That was 30 years ago. As much as we all hate Russo for his shit booking, he was able to successfully drag Vince McMahon into the 90s. Then somebody was able to drag him into the 2000s during the beginning of the ruthless aggression era. That was like 15 years ago. The WWE has been entirely out of touch for 15 years.
I'm one of the few that loved The Ringmaster
Me too.

That's true for most anybody that's stepped in the ring
Actually Irwin has made a bit of money off the Goon gimmick , in the last few years
Bugged out seein him in his Cowboy Bill Irwin shit in Dallas..way more dignified by comparison
Many of those gimmicks were terrible, but at that point, some of those wrestlers would not get over it. The Ringmaster was bad (allegedly, they wanted Benoit for that spot, but he went to WCW), but Austin knew enough to work that until he could find something else. And Mankind looked like a joke on paper when Foley left ECW, but he was able to get that over (working with Taker helped a lot), and he was able to turn that into doing whatever he wanted.
This could be a whole series with every year represented

Love the show. Minor caveat. Mr Cornette is an expert in wrestling, and I don't know anything about wrestling in comparison. I know some things about money. With all due respect to Mr. Cornette, he's 100% wrong on LWO. I live in a neighborhood in NYC where I've seen about a half-dozen of those shirts whenever I walk outside. They're $$$. So I checked. LWO is top selling t-shirt for the 3rd week this month.
Vince always loved cartoon gimmicks and over the top roided guys because it's what worked for him in the 80s. He held out with that until WCW had been kicking his ass for quite a while.
The Attitude Era was still filled from top to bottom with cartoon gimmicks. It was just handled better.
As bad as some of the gimmicks of the 1990s were, I'd still take that product over the modern day "they went 2 minutes and then went to the break" formula over and over again
I’m surprised that they didn’t make the “Ringmaster” an actual master ring maker. He could have had these
Giant rings he’d hide, and hit his opponents with 😂
Here's a hot take. The ringmaster gimmick would've worked better on Dean Malenko. Should've saved the gimmick for 4 years later. Would've probably lead to Malenko getting the Upper Mid Card run he deserved in WWE. He was the best worker in the world and very believable as well as entertaining in ring. He cut good promos when he just kept it short and off the cuff rather than scripted.
Or have the Ringmaster be a frustrated heel wrestler who can't win any matches. Finally he snaps, and starts dismantling the ring in the middle of his matches whenever his opponent starts gaining the upper hand.

1993-7 was a dark time for the WWF.
Top stars had left for WCW. There was a lack of new ideas.
Mostly, kayfabe was definitely dead due to the 1994 steroid trial's exposing the business.
The then-new Internet only allowed people to further speculate and focus on behind the scenes drama as opposed to what was going on in the ring.
In this environment, nearly any gimmick would appear fake. Getting over, especially with cartoonish gimmicks from the past, then was going to be tough.
All my respect to the men and women who did their best to make things work in a tough time for wrestling.
What saved wrestling was Austin and Rock's success was in their ability to seem real in a medium everyone knew was staged.
It worked because Rock and Austin were just playing exaggerated versions of their real-life selves.
1996 for the WWF was both a Blessed and Cursed year I'll admit it was better than 1995 WWF

Supposedly the new LWO is a huge merch mover right this second
The gimmicks that worked were the ones that weren't 1:1 jobs, but of archetypes with a twist. A viewer could recognize a Goldust or a Mankind, but couldn't quite sum them up in one word. This gave those gimmicks freedom.
Only in 1996? The more that I watched WWE, the more obvious it became that Vince really isn't a creative guy at all. In all of his 40 or whatever years of head as WEZ he made exactly TWO good gimmicks: Kane and Undertaker. That's it. Every other guy that was ever over was because they were already over elsewhere (Jericho, Hogan, Savage, Piper... literally everybody) and Vince just let them do their thing. Agree but I hat spells ...there were no more gimmicks and from that time there was Bret and lame
...and in a way wrestling of today is just that..lame.
1) you sound clueless. Shawn didn't draw in fact gates lost ticket sales when 'the boyhood dream became a reality' bc he was a smaller guy who used to be in a Tag Team and wasn't seen as big of a deal to, say, Hulk Hogan who yes had worse matches than HBK but was a bigger character.
2) Of the 3 you named, only Bret drew any money for WWE as champion, esp when they went to Canada. But even he couldn't compare to Hogan or Andre or Yokozuna or any other larger than life main eventer in terms of drawing money
3) I don't think you understand the concept of 'draw as champions'. A champion gets people into the building for a live event, makes the undercard guys (IC champ, tag champs, midcard wrestlers not in the main event, etc.) get seen by the people who are paying money to watch a promotion's live show. Hopefully they get over, but the people aren't paying money to see Spike Dudley fight Mean Street Posse, they paid money to see The Rock and Kurt Angle and Stone Cold-- getting to see Taka Michinoku wrestle Honky Tonk Man for the IC title in the opening match isn't 'drawing money' tho it might be a great match. HBK, Bret, and Diesel put on good matches but you can see as HBK turned heel to join DX it wasn't like he was drawing WWE any money as a babyface champ at all.
