Fantastic decision. Not many refs can make this call. First one is direct red, second one could have been red as well. Most of the refs he prob could get away with a single yellow. Well done...
Yes but he never showed with his body language that the first offence would be punished with a card. That's the issue. The player didn't know. Had he known he wouldn't have made the second tackle.
This referee is the best referee in the world since Collina and I think Michael Oliver is in the top 5 in the world. However, both of Baird's fouls are serious foul play where Martinelli's one's are not. Just because you can give a yellow doesn't mean that you should, as referees common sense plays a huge role in their performance rather than being robots and taking all situations and treat them equally. I think at least one of the Martinelli fouls warrants a verbal warning. If the other player taking the throw in wasn't taking a throw in and Martinelli pushed him like that, it wouldn't have been an automatic yellow because referees deal with that verbally 90% of the time.
@@anterbinshadaad8557 Players have to consider the result what they have done before doing same mistake twice. You cant foul again and again while the game is going on, there must be punishment for this irresponsible manner. This is a good sample for that.
@@denos8424 Its a referees job to make sure players know the limit. Most referees understand this is a football match and their decisions will impact whether people enjoy it or not. If they act like they are in the court room, everybody will switch off the TV and never come to the stadium. Same thing with Policemen. Sometimes you just talk to people and give them a warning because not every action deserves for someone to be taken to the police station and then court and then trial even if its illegal.
@@anterbinshadaad8557 I think the term you’re looking for is “discretion” and whether it’s up to that individual or group of people in what to do whether there is “leniency” or there being “strict”
Peter Walton told to look at this… Both the challenges here are clear yellow cards, Martinelli shoulder barges the wolves player & pushes a wolves players arm, not exactly the same aggression when compared.
Martinelli attempted to sabotage a throw in, which is a caution for unsporting behaviour, then stopped a promising attack, again a clear caution. There's no discussing either one, even if they aren't reckless like these two.
The only problem with this one is that the ref didnt signal an advantage, giving no indication of a foul occurring. So I can understand Northern Ireland's frustration despite the second challenge being a red on it own.
Michael Oliver, however, signalled advantage in Arsenal vs Wolves. So Martinelli can't complain for being booked twice for trying to cynically stop the counter twice.
@@fredrikhanserud2876 Its not proven he was attempting to sabotage, he could actually be upset about the kick the player gave him and tried to demonstrate that. How many times do players try to stop Goalkeepers from kicking straight after receiving the ball and never get booked. Players know what you get in trouble for and what not. The Baird's sending off being the exception tells you everything you need to know about whether the decision is applied correctly or wrongly to the letter of the law. This only means that referee can referee matches according to how they are feeling and not the facts. You could see the upset on Michael Oliver's face when he was booking him and normally he deals with everything very calmly. I really rate Michael Oliver but this one he was in his feelings!!!
Late to the game, arrived here after some doing some research. The only issue I have with how the referee handled things is that I believe he should have made it clear that he was going to come back to Baird after the first cautionable offense, by pointing at Baird so that everyone (including Baird) would know that the referee saw something, and would deal with it after allowing advantage to play out. This is smart for several reasons: one is to perhaps avoid what we saw here; Baird might have decided against his 2nd rash challenge if he knew he was already in trouble (or maybe not, we'll never know). The other is to prevent the opposing team from potentially going after Baird if they thought he got away with the first foul. That didn't happen, but there are plenty of times a team will retaliate if they think they've been wronged and that the referee isn't going to do anything about it.
You know very well that in a fast paced moment like this it is practically impossible. Baird knew he was gonna get a yellow for the first action and wanted to outsmart the referee thinking he was gonna get a yellow anyways so he is free to do 1 more aggression. Cüneyt Çakır is like an average ref in Turkish league but he is world class when he is managing an international game. Guess cant handle the stress in Türkiye.
@@asefizade Which part is practically impossible? Most times when allowing advantage on a play where they will go back and caution the offending player the referee will point dynamically to let everyone know he will deal with it. The referee could have done so here. But either way he still got it right.
Awful decision. Referee should have penalised the Hungarians for the push on Baird, first, at the instant the Northern Irish lost possession. Understand energy. Also, 2 yellows for one phase is ridiculous as it suggests poor refereeing in the first place.
Not an Arsenal fan btw. But both of Baird's fouls were borderline yellow/red, whereas Martinelli's second foul was a soft yellow. Baird deserved a red, whereas Martinelli should have received a yellow - but with a warning that if he as much as breathed on another player he would be sent off. Common sense should always take precedence over the letter of the law.
Why doesnt the ref just show the yellow and let play continue, he can go back and speak to him after a break in play, also let's be honest this is nastier than Martinellis petulance.
This is different from Martenelli's. It was a dead ball, a throw to be exact not a continuous play. If he saw that, he(Ref) should've stopped the play cus Podance had to get up after the push and then throw the ball. That's horrible referring.
@@Richard3261 still was a foul throw, as Podance didn’t have both his feet on the floor as he took the throw-in during that game, so the ref should of blew his whistle for that, so Martinelli shouldn’t of been in a position to be booked for a 2nd time in that passage of play
