What you are satying about return current for differential signals is false, each signal has it's own return current, you need a good return path for each one
can you elaborate? because if a signal is truly differential you can just use the other conductor as a return path, no? of course that does come with some problems in the form of DC offset but even that is more of an afterthought when you couple your signal through a transformer like how modern 1000Base-T ethernet does it
