  • White-throated sparrows are one of our earliest arriving breeders here in Maine. I caught this guy singing up a storm shortly after dawn. Their song is truly the sound of the north woods to me.
If you look closely in the closeup shots you can actually see the birds pupil dilating.

When I was going through a long hard detox from years of opiates (methadone) the birds were there to give comfort and strength to keep on going. I can honestly say the songs of birds were the only real thing that gave a hint of peace during that time. And still do

My absolute favorite bird, all because of that song. Imagine camping deep in a national park. And this wakes you up at 4AM. And you just don't mind. When they team up into a duet, with one bird sending a call in a rising intonation, then the other replying in a distinctly dropping intonation, that's just magical.

I have camped in Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. And the White Throated Sparrows perform well out there, their music carrying over the lakes.
Fortunately, every spring and autumn, I get to hear these in the Cincinnati area. I used to think it was a song of the Carolina Chickadee up until recently. Both little birds are some of my favorites.

I love how so many of us have suddenly heard this piercingly sweet song and wondered what it was, and were delighted to finally figure it out. I first heard it way far off out my window about 3 years ago, and they've gradually come closer and closer -- and now they're feeding in my backyard! I don't remember ever hearing it, so I wonder if it is expanding its habitat and catching the attention of many more bird nerds everywhere!

White-throated Sparrows moved into my area of Pennsylvania a few years ago, and stayed for the winter, but this year is only the second year that they’re nesting around my home. Their song is so lovely and relaxing, and their repeated Kermit the Frog’s plaintive “It’s Not Easy Being Green” is funny, although I’m sure Kermit listened to White-throated Sparrow’s song and (ahem) “stole” it from them!

I kept telling her, "no its some type of bird! I hear every day! A man isn't going to whistle every morning & day & eve!!"
I'm thrilled to no end that I have found this secret bird! And I never ever see him whistling!! He stays hidden in the bushes! I only know his sound!!
I know all birds & sounds here in Ohio and this is a new one just since the pandemic really here in Dayton Ohio! Omg Thank you very much for helping me figure out this mystery! U have no idea how much I truly appreciate figuring this out! (I thought cld he be mockingbird? And many others were on my lists!) But now I know this sweet bird is white throated Sparrow! Blessings

I played this video and to my amazement, a little white throated sparrow flew close to us, circled us and started to do the call.

My comment is exactly like the person's below. I always hear that bird when camping in Ontario and have always wanted to know what it is. Such a distinctive call! Thank you!!

We have these in Chicago. They stay up late and wake up early. Ive heard them at 11pm and 3 am. Then those loudass cardinals, those things loud as hell.

E' una della voci più belle del creato. Mi ha fatto scendere le lacrime. E' come se un Angelo volesse parlare con te. Una voce del cielo più profondo.
