My great-grandma and grandpa used to preform this song together, so my grandma loves it so my mom loves it and its kind of a family song that we sing together.
I heard this song performed in the 1950s by the great Met Opera basso profundo, Jerome Hines, in the big green opera house by the RR tracks in Tulsa, OK. I was about 10 years old at the time. My parents got us seats in the front row. When Hines sang the part about the tax collector, I got to laughing so hard that he began laughing and had to walk off stage briefly to compose himself. Afterward, we went back stage and he autographed a program to me, writing: "Pay those taxes!" (He's not on UA-cam singing the Green Eyed Dragon song, but there is a video of him singing "Old Man River," which he also performed at the concert in Tulsa.)
Very nice, but no mention of the fact it was originally composed as a breathing exercise - the challenge was to be able to sing the entire song on 3 breaths. Just breathing once at the beginning, then the 2 breaks between verses. The rest of the song uninterrupted. But still very nice with good acting!
@@ErykaSoleil That's what my music teacher told me. When I learned it, I remember specifically we had to insert places to breathe, because as it's written aren't supposed to be there.
I sang this for a music festival when I was in high school, I think it was my Junior year, so spring of 1987. Such a fun song!
This is cool. I like it.

This is a state contest.. You don't have to say those things. But I agree this is great singing
@@huskylover639 i think they meant in the description.
The whole song with three breaths?! That's insane! I just knew it was an old song my mom used to sing to me all the time when I was a child. 😆

this is not a song where you sit there and smile you actually use action. You look like your going to explode with laughter.
