You always end up feeling sorry for the guitarist who has to play the Mick Ronson solo in a David Bowie cover. They never ever get anywhere near to what Mick could play. Iwas lucky ( and old enough ) to see Mick play live with David Bowie and Ian Hunter . His guitar sound was totally unique. He was simply the best. R. I. P Mick and thank you for such great memories.

I agree with you, but Stevens did a pretty good version of it actually. I'd rather listen to him play it than Reeves Gabrels or Adrian Belew, both of whom made an artsy hash of it.
There's a UA-cam video of Bowie and Ronson playing this live. I'm not sure where it was (could be Berlin) Bowie is wearing his white silk short kimono. Once you've watched THAT you'll never want to hear any cover of this, ever. Bowie's magnificent vocal and those last 3 minutes of Mick Ronson's sublime solo is of another world.
I think the video you refer to may be the one at the Hammersmith, where Bowie and everyone else involved were absolutely out of this world (the one where at one point Bowie said to the audience "This is not only the last show of the tour, but it is the last show we will ever do"). I think I've watched the entire show not less than 200 times in the last 30 years of my life, and every single time I am mesmerized.
"Guts" are not a problem in such cases...Bowie's inability to write songs as good as "Stand by me", "Hey Joe", "Summertime", or "House of the Rising Sun" is the problem...Bowie was foremostly performer, not a songwriter...Why would anyone want to do the cover of "Heroes" when you can sing "I can see clearly" instead (a much better song that "Heroes" was derived from)...Why would anyone do a cover of "Let's Dance" when you can do "Hey Hey, My My" instead (one of the better songs used in the creation of "Let's Dance")...but listening to Bowie is another cup of the tea, I am not preaching against that...cause, as I said, he was foremostly performer, not a songwriter.
