Hey! Just wanted to say that I, a Shakespeare fan who didn’t know anything about this play, just got asked to SM it and stumbled across this. I really enjoyed your video and immediately watched all your other ones! Thank you for doing this so I can send this to any friends that want to come see the show 😂
I cannot stress enough how much I think you should see the Stratford Festival production that is currently on stage at the Tom Patterson Theatre in Stratford, Ontario. Lucy Peacock plays Cymbeline--and flipping the gender of the monarch makes for some really interesting and effective storytelling.
"I kind of love this bonkers ass play but..." exactly my thoughts! Cymbeline is so insane, like explaining the plot to the uninitiated is a task in and of itself, and you did very well summarizing it in an engaging and humorous way. I haven't been lucky enough to see it performed live, just the 2015 film which is uh. well it certainly is cymbeline, but i feel like it takes itself way too seriously, and in my opinion this story is kind of at its most rad when its being a little stupid. Thank you for this video, it was a good find!
I particularly love the Song that the mountain lads sing when they think their new buddy Fidele (their unbeknownst sister) is dead. It's lovely that it's also a dirge for Cloten, as well, in spite of they way he came at them. I've sung settings of it at two funerals, and might want it sung at my own. Here're the lyrics for this who don't know them: "Fear no more the heat o’ th’ sun, Nor the furious winter’s rages; Thou thy worldly task hast done, Home art gone and ta’en thy wages. Golden lads and girls all must, As chimney-sweepers, come to dust. Fear no more the frown o’ th’ great; Thou art past the tyrant’s stroke. Care no more to clothe and eat; To thee the reed is as the oak. The scepter, learning, physic must All follow this and come to dust. Fear no more the lightning flash. Nor th’ all-dreaded thunderstone. Fear not slander, censure rash; Thou hast finished joy and moan. All lovers young, all lovers must Consign to thee and come to dust. No exorciser harm thee, Nor no witchcraft charm thee. Ghost unlaid forbear thee. Nothing ill come near thee. Quiet consummation have, And renownèd be thy grave."
Zelma! Thank you so much for making this, I'm auditioning soon for the role of Cloten and you're right, there is so little content about this play anywhere... your summary and commentary were super useful!
ive just started this video. im one of the stage managers at my school but ive always wanted to try my hand at acting. i found out early that we are doing this as the spring play. if i like what i hear in this video ill try out. will update if i do try our or if i get a role
Thank you. I think Bill the Bard had some interesting mushrooms during the composition phase ! Holy Ship, what a rollercoatser!
"Imogen trusts him right away!" *thematically appropriate sirens*
Firefighters supporting the arts.
I love this play, it's so silly and goofy! Thank you for covering it, it deserves its moment in the sun!

I think Cymbeline sounds more like a lady's name anyway!
Thank you for the explanation. This has helped me a great deal towards enjoying one of the lesser known works.
I felt seen when you were like, "you have probably never heard of this play."

Do you have a recommendation where I could find a recording of it? I find it hard to image a tune, but the lyrics really are beautiful!

This was such a good summary & analysis thank you!!
Thinking about doing my masters project on this! It's such an underrated play, thank you for this great video :)
Thanks for highlighting the importance of understanding and engaging with the living audience when creating or presenting art.
Hello! I really enjoyed your video, I’m about to go into Shakespeare class and this was so informative!💯🙏
Just a lotta fun. Even H. Bloom would have rnjoyed it because you engaged with. Also, jokes are better than his would have been

Your picture of Rome in Shakespeare’s day bears a remarkable resemblance to Florence. It’s uncanny.
Thank you for this. Off to Stratford Upon Avon today to see this play and this has really helped ☺️
Beautifully done
Helpful thanks
Ive known of this play due to Loreena Mckennit’s haunting song Cymbeline (Fear no more the heat of the sun). Nice to finally know the plot.
This was absolutely amazing
:c but your last video is form 2 yrs ago and that sucks
found you too late
Yes, I think you're putting too much contemporary politics into a great work.
