Hey actor! I have bad news. Just reading SparkNotes or LitCharts isn’t enough when it comes to nailing your Shakespeare monologue. The good news is that I created a new resource to help you feel super duper clear about what everything means, even if you’re a complete beginner. Go here: shakespearewithsarah.com/translate/

Thank you so much for this! 🥰 I don’t know why it irks me that some people do this monologue (and other females from Shakespeare) in such a wet way. Imogen, especially in this example is definitely feeling all sorts of big, angry and hurt emotions but she’s got spine to be snappy at her would-be killer all the same. Nothing about this particular monologue screams weeping willow to me. 🤷🏽‍♀️

Hi friends! Thanks for watching. I'll be diving even deeper into Cymbeline on Instagram this month, so if you're working on this monologue for an audition, I hope to see you over on IG! I'll also be adding another video very soon focusing on this whole scene, with acting exercises that you can do. Much love, Sarah.

Wonderful! Looking forward to seeing your thoughts on the tricky 'I false? Thy conscience witness! Iachimo,' speech from this scene.

Thank you ever so much for this, I will be doing this monologue for drama school auditions soon and your interpretations and acting choices have really helped me understand it more! Much appreciated :)

Oh fantastic! I'll just note here though that you don't have to take the angry sarcastic interpretation, that just feels right to me, probably because I am a bit of a sarcastic person 🤪 There are definitely lots of productions (probably most productions) where it's played like she really wants to die. It's a tough monologue! Good luck for your audition. x

Thanks for the podcast rec this episode! Good music as well. Your videos are great; they make you reexamine how much more is there then what's read at first.

Hurray! Thanks for the comment about the music, I'm trying to work on that aspect of my videos. I find it a bit tricky 😬
Another podcast that I listened to after I recorded this was from Cheek by Jowl - their podcast is called Not True, But Useful. It's fantastic. I'll link the episode in the description.

Haha thanks! I decided to just lean into the bling for this video 😂 They are just cheap ones actually, from a chain store that they have in Aus called Lovisa, but I do love them too. They look great on stage! 😁

Cymbeline really deserves to be performed more than it is; despite it's reputation as a difficult play. I saw an impressive production at The Globe in 2001; on a bare stage with no set, with a cast of only 6 (Mark Rylance playing 3 roles) all dressed in the same white linen suits and all the actors on stage all the time. Very confusing if you don't know the play, but I thought it worked brilliantly.
This would be a brave choice for an audition but your video should encourage some to take a chance on something a bit out of the ordinary. More please.

That sounds great to me! I would have loved to see that. Pity it's not available online. I think it's the sort of play that benefits from creative approaches, because it's so out there that it's difficult to do completely naturalistically. Jupiter showing up on an eagle is certainly difficult to do at the best of times!
Thanks for your support as always, Keith. This month I'm focusing on Cymbeline so I will have a few more videos to encourage people!

I think I might be a bit late, but your account is so helpful! It genuinely helps me and I really love this community you have created! Never stop doing what you love. This helps a lot with my monologue I’m forced to perform for my 11th grade acting class 😞😞

Could you do her monologue that comes before this one? The one that starts with “I false? Thy conscience witness” up to “now that mayst seem a coward”

Yes! Actually I'm thinking I'll work on this one for an audition I've got coming up, so I'll try to do a video soon! Do you have a deadline?

U r wonderful but I believe she’s saying that when your new gf dumps you, you’ll know
what u did to me. (To “tire on her “ is to rest or expire-sexually-on top of her, not to get tired of her. )

This part instantly made me think of "You Oughta Know" by Alanis. 😂 Obviously, very different in many ways but at least a bit of overlap in the vibe. "Are you thinking of me when you **** her?" With all the Alanis outrage. =-)
