Tomato is the type of vegetable that has a huge variable range in goodness depending on a myriad of factors. Probably the biggest factor is the type of tomato. Search "Heirloom tomato" and you find a huge range of excellent types of tomatoes, usually with a lot less water and a more potent flavour (and bigger). They are very good for sandwitches.
The grocery ones on the otherhand, are genetically modified for survivablity and enduring the journey between harvest and into the market shelves, making them horrible in the process (for raw eating anyways). Italy loves their tomatoes because their tomatoes are simply better and they look similar to heirloom tomatoes (might be the same thing not sure).
But yeah, the normal supermarket ones are very boring and at most low B for raw eating, I'm saying this as a person who incorporates tomatoes in a lot of things, including eating it raw sometimes.

No one asked but here's my opinion:
Mushroom is so fucking good, a little bit funky sometimes but mushroom gravy + steak is incredible, A is perfect for it. Eggplant I cannot eat, everyway i had it has been mushy and slimy, so far it is an F for me. Sweet Potatoes are absolutely amazing but imo they are just too rich and sweet sometimes, frying them up like french fries is already so sweet and greasy so I feel like adding butter to it is overkill, it is a B tier imo.

The truth is that tomatoes taste like absolute ass on their own and the only way they even become tolerable is when the taste is masked by other things in a dish. Plus most tomato flavored stuff doesn't even taste like tomatoes.
