I am 71 and have loved Elvis since my teen years. I am so surprised to see the younger generation appreciate this man. He is timeless.
Austin Butler, who played Elvis to such acclaim now owns that guitar. It was given to him by the Presley family and says it's his most prized possession.

I was only 11 when Elvis passed away and I was devastated!!! I cannot watch videos of him performing at the end of his life. It brings me right back to the day I found out he was gone 😔 I have always been a fan and always will be. Thank you for another great Elvis reaction. Guitar Man 1968, LONG BEFORE HIP HOP was even a THOUGHT. Elvis' flow was just UNIQUE. Noone was able to project like that. NOONE.
Jerry Reed, who wrote and first recorded Guitar Man, did a fine job with "the flow" and playing the lead guitar.
THE LEGEND Mr BB KING spent A LOT OF TIME WITH ELVIS: 'Before Elvis we had Little Black Sambo, separate black restrooms and water fountains, and colored events that kept us away from the whites', BB King noted as he mention that Presley would attend events especially designated just for African-Americans.
In June 1956, Presley ignored Memphis's segregation ordinances by attending 'Colored Night' at the local fairgrounds amusement park. The following December, King was there as Presley opened up almost unbreakable racial barriers by attending and supporting the segregated WDIA black radio station's annual fund-raising event for 'needy black children' at Memphis' Ellis Auditorium. King wrote in his autobiography that he 'liked Elvis. I saw him as a fellow Mississippian. I was impressed by his sincerity.
When he came to the Goodwill Review (the event WDIA fund raisers of 1956 and 1957), he did himself proud'. 'The Goodwill Revues were important', he wrote. 'The entire black community turned out. All the DJs carried on, putting on skits and presenting good music'. In his autobiography, King said he held no grudges because 'Elvis didn't steal any music from anyone. He just had his own interpretation of the music he'd grown up on, same is true for everyone. I think Elvis had integrity'.
BB KING: 'If anyone says Elvis Presley was a racist', charged B.B. King in the 2010 interview. 'Then they don't know a thing about Elvis Presley or music history. 'Many nights after we finished our sets and I'd go up to his suite', King stated. 'I'd play Lucille (on Elvis' guitar) and sing with Elvis, or we'd take turns. It was his way of relaxing'. 'I'll tell you a secret', King winked and laughed. 'We were the original Blues Brothers because that man Elvis knew more blues songs than most in the business - and after some nights it felt like we sang everyone one of them."

I'm white, but I'm just being honest - I would have loved to have hung out at the nightclubs in Memphis in the 50s - minus the violence caused by racists. Hanging out and listening to Little Richard and guys like that and rocking out? In the late 90s when I was in high school, being "so white" meant you were lame. Everyone wanted to be black. Elvis in the 50s made it cool for white people to listen to and dress like black people. Or at least, he exposed just how cool the whole rock thing (music and style) was and is. I'm sure it was physically dangerous in the south to be a white guy who was hanging out with black people and dressing like them. That took serious balls. The KKK didn't mess around, even in the 50s. Call me a cultural expropriator, but I would have done the same thing in Elvis' position. You've got the talent and the music is awesome and you can make a difference for people with your music. Soon after Elvis was on Ed Sullivan, plenty of other highly talented black rock artists ended up on there, many from Memphis. He didn't just make himself big. He dragged people who earned it along with him.

In the videos “ Elvis and the Black Community” 1 & 2 we see how hard it was for Elvis, but he stuck to his guns , being the legend he is. 🙏💕🕺

“Just Pretend” live is a great song. I agree with you, I cannot watch songs from his last performance, it just breaks my heart to see him so ill and performing, his voice was still phenomenal but I just can’t watch it. Love your Elvis reactions. I have been an Elvis fan for 67 years, I love watching younger people discover what a treasure he was was and still is.

Its not that Elvis took or borrower others songs but he made them better in most cases than the originals. Also, songs were written with him in mind that were never done by anyone else, and so that's not taking or borrowing but its music tailored for Elvis in mind based on his image. He never stated he was a song writer but a singer.

So what was Elvis' actual contribution to music? It was specifically love, timing, environment and distribution. Ok so Rock music is mainly made up of Country (mostly white artists), Gospel (50% white 50% black artists) and the Blues (mostly black artists). Lets add to that the legendary song writers (such as Leiber and Stoller). Thats where rock and roll sprang from. Elvis is the only musician inducted into the Gospel, Blues and Country and Rock Halls of Fame.
Elvis was different, and his perspective was different than most white people of his day, especially among other whites in the South. Elvis grew up in the poorest parts of the South during the Great Depression and Segregation. And he understood the very lowest depths of poverty. Only 4 white families on his block, he lived and played with black children while living in a 1 room shotgun shack without running water or electricity. His father built the home with a borrowed $150, then lost it because they couldn't afford to pay it back. How poor was Elvis? His twin brother Jesse Garon Presley was still born about 30 minutes before Elvis... and the Presleys were so poor that they couldn't afford a coffin, so Jesse had to be buried in a shoebox.
Elvis was uniquely born at a time and place, Tupelo (SHAKERAG) AND Memphis (BEALE STREET) when so much new music and dance were happening.
Elvis was TRAINED BY BLACK MUSICIANS in black churches (and white musicians in white churches) in the 1940s BEFORE most of the legends like Little Richard or James Brown or Chuck Berry rocked the world. Rev W Herbert Brewster of the East Trigg Baptist Church asked Elvis to join when he was 13, after Elvis and his family moved to Memphis. They were jamming before and during the legendary black musicians got heard. He was able to merge music genres and black and white culture better than anyone and created the sound and stage performance of Rock and Roll. AND as soon as ELVIS started to make money -- THEY ALL MADE MONEY!
Little Richard talked about this: "He sung my Tootie Fruti & by him singing it, made it bigger & made ME bigger" And then he said: “I thank God for Elvis Presley. I thank the Lord for sending Elvis to open the door so I could walk down the road...”- Little Richard
The NUMBER ONE talent who helped shape Elvis from a child is Reverend W HERBERT BREWSTER of East Trigg Baptist Church in Memphis. In the 1940s Elvis was jamming with black and white gospel choirs and quartets. Much of his soul comes from these sessions. Much of ROCK AND ROLL came from those 1940s sessions. Elvis WAS part of the change.
He WAS a pioneer. Its not culture appropriation / culture vulture when you are a pioneer of a sound. Elvis never stole a song. He credited everyone, ensuring all songwriters were listed next to every song on each album. No exceptions. He jammed with those that came before him. He was friends with all the legends.. B.B. King, Otis Blackwell, Little Richard, Chuck Berry, Fats Domino, Roy Hamilton and many more.
You cant STEAL "COOL" You cant steal "RHYTHM". You cant steal "SOUL". You cant STEAL "HOW TO DANCE". You can't steal "HOW TO SAAANG". You either HAVE THESE SKILLS, or I you do NOT. Elvis was ABLE TO MERGE MUSIC AND CULTURE better than any one else alive at the time. So that is what made Elvis so unique in those days, and controversial because today people don't understand who the good guys and bad guys were and all the details of the day. Its hard to look back and see who exactly were the thieves and who was trying to HELP.
Elvis didnt only help, that man tore down walls of racism for everyone. He stood up and did it a man's way. Without concern for his own health and safety, his career, and his quality of life. This gets talked about by the great, late Reverend himself. Elvis and the Black Community. You saíd it perfectly, i mean Elvis said in the sitdown shows about big musical differences in last 10 years, engineers have changed and everything else, but when he said "rock n roll music just mixture of gospel and r/b just adding on to it. It's a simple answer he gave but best one I've heard, every type of musical genre is mixed with each other in somé ways going back hundreds of years. My favorite other quote by Elvis when he talked about Arthur "Big Boy Crudup" and said something to the fact if he could ever get the feeling that big boy had inside, he would be a music man, like no one had ever seen. I guess he kind of succeeded...lol (definitely sarcasm..lol). I mean how many 18-21 year old kids (1954-1956) during that period listened to Mario Lanza, Dean Martin, Hank Sr, Jimmie Rodgers but then could go r/b and then switch gospel? Elvis always thought of a new way to sing a song which shows at Sun, gospel records, etc , Only Not counting "movie soundtracks or some of the 70's albums where Elvis just kind of phoned it in.
There is only person that he said that he would never cover and that was Roy Orbison, because said you can never top a Orbison recording, that is some serious respect
The house built by his father was not in a black neighbourhood, Elvis was just three years old when they lost that house. It was some years later that they ended up renting a house on the edge of the black neighbourhood known as the Hill, close to Shake Rags. Elvis and Otis Blackwell actually never met, but Elvis was good friends with many black artists of that time. This less known version called Remembering Elvis is really good

If you listen to the original audio recordings of those songs you will hear just how creative Elvis was, as they are completely different vocal performances. I just want to point out the iconic imagery in the background. It's taken from the film Jailhouse Rock but i love that each 'cell' is filled with men doing clasic Elvis moves they are recognisable as Elvis moves, even in silhouette. It wasn't just his voice that made him an icon. ❤

I know it’s in Pennsylvania. Any sings this song in at the end of the song he bust out that big lyric and he’s laying on his back. It is crazy nuts find that one you will love it and everybody will love it not too many people know about that one. With him singing that high note going nuts on his back.

One of the most inspirational moments of Elvis on stage were from his final concert. Somehow I think he knew the end was near the song my way from the final concert. Devastating but his best performance also from the 1977 concert he does a rendition of how great thou Art it was then as I was watching it maybe I was 15 years old I knew. I just knew I turned around to my mother. It was on a TV special from CBS TV. I turned to my mother and I said mommy Elvis is going to die I just in my heart knew when he sang that, it was like watching his last testimony to God on stage. I remember that like it was yesterday and my gun broke and that little girl was very afraid. I was so frightened that I would lose him, but somehow I just knew the end was coming from hearing how great thou Art from the 1977 concert. You have to do a reaction on that OK I’m just talking but watching reactions and it’s bringing back memories 💔💕💕💔

I honestly think I should start there. I’m super nervous to see him in the end again. That Unchained Melody was amazing. But, it completely broke my heart. He was such a beautiful person. 😞.
@@awordfrompresidentpat1484 There are so many great songs from the early years. I think the reason they aren't requested by viewers is because most of them aren't accompanied by live performances. Professional filming wasn't allowed at Elvis concerts early on. There are no video live performances available from '54 and '55. The ones you can find from '56 and '57 are 12 appearances on 4 different TV shows, portions of a concert in Tupelo, Mississippi in '56 and movie clips. From '58 to '68 it's all movie clips because there were no concerts during those years. From '68-'77 there were only 4 occasions when professional filming was done -- The '68 Comeback Special, That's The Way It Is (in '70), Elvis On Tour (in '72), Aloha In Hawaii (in '73) and the TV special (in '77). There are so many incredible songs to be heard that Elvis either never performed live or weren't filmed. Content creators have put slideshow/videos to many of these songs. And recently I've seen a few using AI technology, and they're very well done. I hope I haven't bored you too much with all this information.
As for the '77 version of "Hurt", I understand where you're coming from so I'll offer you an alternative: RARE 8 MM FOOTAGE: ELVIS SINGS "HURT" LIVE DECEMBER 31, 1976 IN LAS VEGAS (2:11). Of, course the quality of this amateur clip is not as good as the '77 version, but it's not bad at all.
I'm enjoying your Elvis journey so much, and I can guarantee you won't regret listening to audio only songs.

I recommended this combo song performance to you a long time ago! So glad you're giving it a listen. It's PRIME 68 SPECIAL ELVIS for sure and it really showcases his musical talents. It provides a glimpse of a younger ELVIS performaning in the 50's when ELVIS & HIS GUITAR ROCKED OUR WORLD.
Love you reactions and appreciation of Elvis' talents! I totally understand when it comes to watching Elvis in 1977, its difficult for me also, but if is part of his history, but very emotional! There are other videos of Elvis singing "Hurt" and they are phenomenal!
