  • join me in showing this old forgotten wool-blend machine knitted sweater some TLC by upcycling it into a new sweater! This isn’t a tutorial as much as a walk-through of a particular project: I show the process of undoing the seams, unravelling the yarn, and knitting the different parts. If you want to knit something less costly than buying yarn from new, and you enjoy experimental and unpredictable creative processes, this might be for you! And as always with slow fashion, it’s a great way to renew your wardrobe, and reduce your textile waste - an otherwise large climate struggle. Here are some resources about textile waste:
    www.sciencedirect.com/science... - “[…] average global annual consumption of textiles has doubled from 7 to 13 kg per person and reached to the threshold of 100 million tonnes of textiles consumption. More than two thirds of the textile goes to landfill at the end of their use and just around 15% is recycled.”
    www.supplychaindive.com/news/... - “The utilization of clothing - the average number of times a piece of clothing is worn before being discarded - has decreased 36% in the last 15 years”
    www.intechopen.com/books/wast... - “In 2015, greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from textile production were responsible for 1.2 billion tons of CO2 equivalent of greenhouse gas (GHG). This figure exceeds the emissions that result from all international flights and maritime shipping combined […]”
    “Of this recycled 13%, a minuscule part is used to produce new clothing-less than 1%. The rest is recycled into other, lower-value items such as insulation material, wiping cloths or mattress stuffing”
    These are from a quick search, there are books, documentaries, and articles etc. about this to seek out if you want to know more! Or let me know if I should comprise some numbers on this - I probably will, anyway.

    hey that was such a great video! i'm not a very experienced knitter/crocheter (?) yet but i would love to try upcycling a sweater like that and turning it into something else, maybe once i graduate to making sweaters or even some simpler project. i think the light blue moher thread broke up the monotony of the beige thread - both the colour and the texture - so nicely, i really liked it! also my heart melted when your guinea pig climbed up on your shoulder and peeked out from underneath your scarf in one of the knitting clips... so precious :')

    You should be proud and happy. You made a great new sweater. I like the idea of combining mohair with the original yarn. Super. I wish I had thought of unraveling a wool sweater I had that I didn't like the look.

    Hi, congratulations on explaining your idea very well! I live in sub tropical city of Brisbane Australia and I love it. I’m older than your grandmother, but I need to learn knitting in English as I have not done any knitting in over 35 years! I have 2 jumpers to undo, so now I’ll know how to do it! So, you don’t go through the washing to clean and straighten the yarn? The winding on the swifter into skeins, to be wound again into cakes? You just ignore all that tedium,m unravel it, wind it and knit it? You are amazing! I so vastly prefer your method🥰

    • @Aeronautisk
      @Aeronautisk  2 роки тому +1

      I honestly find that it isn’t necessary!! Depending on the yarn type it can buckle a bit when reknit, which I find to be a charming added texture. I don’t block my sweaters either 🤭 & I haven’t felt the earth shaking beneath me yet! Imo all of that is more nice to than need to, and with aaall that time+effort? Not so nice to ;-)

    • @Aeronautisk
      @Aeronautisk  3 роки тому +4

      Thank you! I might do something slightly more technical and specific, but since I never use a new yarn, it will be hard to find the same type of yarn, and therefore also adjusting the needle size and amount of stitches to the substitute yarn for any viewer would be difficult. And also, my process is very intuitive and improvised! I draw out an idea of what the sweater might look like, and write down what I do, but it’s not planned out. It’s something I’ve done a lot and because of experience have gotten better at! But I can definitely talk about general guidelines etc. For this way of knitting in a future video 💌

    I have 2 questions I was was hoping you could answer:
    1. What was the appliance you used to remove the lint? (some Philips thing?)
    2. When you separated the sleeves, did you immediately decrease/increase the sleeve stitches, or did you continue with the same number you had till the cuffs? I love the big sleeves you went with, was wondering how you shaped them!
    Thanks in advance!

    • @Aeronautisk
      @Aeronautisk  2 роки тому +1

      Hi! :-)
      I think it’s called a lint remover, or fuzz remover. It’s very handy!! As for the sleeves, I just continued with the same amount of stitches with no increase or decrease until the cuff, where I tapered it a bit by uniformly decreasing 🌷💌 thank you for watching & commenting!

    I am trying to unravel my home knit jumper but it is very slow going. Every time I get to the end of unravelling a row the yarn gets stuck & I have to pull all my unravelled wool through a stitch to keep on unravelling. Does anybody know what I am doing wrong? Every video I watch the wool never gets stuck on each end if the garment & it is a continuous process.

    • @Aeronautisk
      @Aeronautisk  2 роки тому

      Did you knit it yourself? It could be something with the way it was knit, I have tried unravelling something that kept snagging, too, I gave up actually. Since I am not familiar with the knitting technique that caused it, it’s hard to undo. Have you undone all the seams?

    • @gill8779
      @gill8779 2 роки тому

      @@Aeronautisk Thank for your quick reply!. Yes I knit it myself in plain stocking stitch. I undid all the seams fine, but It snags at each end. I have to pull the yarn I have unravelled through a few stitches before it continues to unravel.. It is a wool mix with yak but it is unravelling fine until I get to the ends. The trouble is I can't pull much wool through without getting tangles, as if I roll in a ball I can't get the ball through the stitches at the end!. I feel I may have to give up as well as there will be too many joinings in the wool with the short lengths I can unravel!!

    • @Aeronautisk
      @Aeronautisk  2 роки тому +1

      @@gill8779 often the fibers tangle together and create almost a knot. If it’s not a dark yarn you can sometimes see the little loop of fibers binding together strands of yarn that aren’t tangled otherwise. If you cut the little loop of fibers connecting the yarn maybe? It’s hard to troubleshoot a knitting problem when I can’t see or feel it myself.
