What a great tip! I would not have thought of putting the yarn back on the swift, I usually just wind it into a cake and deal with the kinks. But the steaming trick is the best! I have been known to even buy a sweater at the thrift store for $2 so I could take it apart and reuse the yarn for something else. Yup, recycle and reuse, plus it’s cheap. And NOW I know how to get out the kinks, can’t wait to try it.
I just bought several items for that exact purpose, looking for more expensive fibers. It kinda felt like I got away with something bevause of how cheap it was hahaha 😅
I love unraveling thrifted sweaters for yarn. I think you can unkink it using a clothes steamer as well as a kettle if one is available- I'm going to try it with my next sweater and my newish steamer.
This was very helpful. I frogged a kid’s sweater that I started 10 years ago. I want to knit it, but I need to start over. I don’t even knit the same way now. I just finished straightening the yarn and caking it up. Can’t wait to start the sweater again. 🤗
I frogged a cardigan I made a couple of years ago; I messed up on my measurements and it was too small. I spent a gob on the yarn so decided to reclaim it but frogging is not a fun process. Kudos to those who can thrift sweaters and reclaim yarn on the regular. T his genius method of straightening the yarn has me all set to start a new project. Thanks!
I have one skein of wool left from the original project (it was extra and has never been knit). Before incorporating it into the new project should I steam or wash it to get it to bloom like the reclaimed skeins? I’m just concerned that it will be noticeably different in the finished garment.
I have been doing this but soaking it in a basin with wool wash vs steaming it. This looks like it’s a lot faster and so much less drying time. Thanks - I am going to give this a try.
Just about to unravel a half finished ten year old project (a jumper of my husband), I’ve no idea why I didn’t complete it! Anyway, I’m still with ‘im ‘n want to start all over again...with a simpler pattern, so thanks very much for your demo on unkinking recycled wool...x
Thank you sooo much for this video. I recently completed a cardigan and I feel I made the sleeves a bit too wide. I plan on reknitting the sleeves and your method for preparing the frogged yarn is perfect. I have an actual garment steamer and I had not thought of simply steaming the yarn. That is so much easier and dries much faster.
Hey, girl! I started knitting 24 years ago and I just learned this trick today! Lol. No matter how long you've been knitting, there's always something new to learn.
I am so glad I found this video. I have read comments where people mentioned washing yarn that had been frogged to prepare it to use again and I really did not want to do something that required that much work but I just frogged a sweater and it is pretty kinky. Steaming seems to be a simpler method and it looks like it works well.
I have a vintage hand held clothing steamer that I bought for traveling. I have also just sprayed my yarn with warm water, scrunched it, and hung it to dry.
Hi Jana, Another helpful video. I admit I watched it because it is short! Then I saw that beautiful yarn with its luster and color and need to know what it is. Thanks!
Thanks for watching! The yarn I'm repurposing in this video is Blue Moon Fiber Arts Socks that Rock mediumweight www.ravelry.com/yarns/library/blue-moon-fiber-arts-socks-that-rock-mediumweight
OMG! I'm not the only one with cast iron pans out on my stove! I have a 9" with lid and 6" that literally never leave the stove top because I use them multiple times a day. Now, on the subject of yarn, given what you said about you not liking to reuse yarn without steaming, I'm wondering what your view is on sock blanks. I've never knit from one myself, but I certainly have knit straight from other projects and I've found that gauge has a lot to do with the issue you brought up about how the yarn lays on the needle. I've found that the tighter the gauge, the less it matters. Anyway, loved the video!
Cast iron is the only way to go! I do not like sock blanks unless I'm willing to unravel and reskein, for the very reasons I mention in the video. Thanks for watching!
I wonder if maybe you're adding twist when winding? You might try to observe what is happening when you wind yarn slowly, then try to see if you can wind the yarn the opposite way to help that problem.
Great tips but I see lots of safety risks using the tea kettle directly over flame and without using a tool instead of hands and arms to hold the yarn while steaming. Add warning label BEFORE demonstrating.
Whoa! I didn't expect that yarn to relax so quickly!! So satisfying 😍
Fabulous! I was convinced I'd have to soak about 10 skeins of yarn 😩from a sweater I plan to frog, but this is so much easier. Thank you!!

That it’s amazing! I thought I was going to have to soak it and dry it again. Steam is genius! Thank you so much.

Thank you so much for teaching us how to "un-noodle" our yarn. I did it and now I have fresh, sleek yarn to start a new pattern. Amazing!!❤❤❤❤❤
You are so welcome!

Incredible how effective the steam is
Wow! Just Wow! What a great technique! I just frogged a project and got the kinks out. Thank you
Wow, that was amazing, I’ve never seen wool relaxing before. I’ll definitely try that. Very helpful. Thank you

Great video Jana, thanks! You’re such a good teacher.
4:51 WOW that's magic
thank you so much for this video tutorial, as a newbie I have so many things to learn!!
Glad it was helpful!
Hey, girl! I started knitting 24 years ago and I just learned this trick today! Lol. No matter how long you've been knitting, there's always something new to learn.
I’ve done this by simply wetting the yarn and hanging it to dry. The kinks come out, I rewind, and make a new sweater!
Great tip to use the next time I have to repurpose my yarn👍👍😎
Wow the steaming part was so cool! Thanks for sharing this
Thanks for watching!
So great! Thank you! It really is the little things that make my day. I could have watched that wool smooth out a doutzen times!

This was amazing! Such wonderful information and demonstration. Thanks.
Thanks for the quick and easy procedure, I have a very old project with Lopi yarn I want to frog and reuse for a future weaving project. 👍👍👍
I have a vintage hand held clothing steamer that I bought for traveling. I have also just sprayed my yarn with warm water, scrunched it, and hung it to dry.
Happy Valentines Jana! And thank you!
That's wonderful!
Thank you! Thank you!
I usually just wind it into a ball. Never really crossed my mind putting it on my swift. Thanks.
Hi im from Philippines thank you for the beautiful tips 😘😊
Wow! This video was very helpful!
Thank you for this video, you're amazing and it saved my yarn for another knit, yay! 🧶
Thank you Jana, this is so helpful. I want to frog a hat and reuse the yarn.
this is great! Learn something new every day!!
This what exactly the info I was looking for! Thank you!
This is a brilliant method!
Thank-you so very much. I have several frogs to rip-it and I didn't think of how to relax the kinks.
Thank you ❤so much for the video it was a great help😊
I'm so glad!
Thank you Jana I want to frog a sweater and now I feel more confident and I won't have all those little links in the yarn
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS! I frogged a part of my sweater a lot so it doesn't match the other parts because it's all crumpled and thin.
So very helpful.Thank you. Would not have tackled adding pattern without the tutorial.

Christina 🧡
So insightful, thanks. We have the same stove, ha ha!
Thank you, just what I needed ❤
Glad it helped!
I wonder if you could simply steam it on the winder if you had a handheld steamer
I don't see why not!
Super super helpful!
Woah, magic!
That's like magic. Thanks for sharing.
Glad you enjoyed it!
thank you!!!! i have yarn i need to relax and im soooo trying this :)
Very helpful 👌🏽Thank you again ❤
Thanks! That is exactly what I needed to know !!!
Wow. Thank you for sharing 👍👍👍
will hair blower work?
Thank you. This is so useful. What if the yarn is synthetic??
I haven't reused synthetic yarn, so I haven't tried steaming it, but I'd certainly give it a try!
Brilliant!
THANK YOU!! 😊
You are so welcome!
Thank you! Very helpful!
Very helpful video, thank you so much for sharing 🙏

Genius!
That was so good, Thank You!
Glad it was helpful!
Loved this! Thank you so much😇
You're so welcome!
Very helpful video. Thank you.
Does this work with cotton? I had to frog a whole sweater because it was the wrong size
I haven't tried this with cotton, so I can't say. Let me know if you try it!
Thanks You!!!
You're welcome!
Does this steam method work with acrylic yarn?
I haven't tried it, since I don't knit with very much acrylic, but you could certainly try it! Let us know how it goes.
Very useful to know thank you.
amazing! thanks a lot!
You are welcome!
Is it work with cotton yarn?
Sure, you can reskein cotton yarn
very helpful, thank you.
Wow
My yarn is twisted, more dense, when rewind it. Anyway to fix this?
I wonder if maybe you're adding twist when winding? You might try to observe what is happening when you wind yarn slowly, then try to see if you can wind the yarn the opposite way to help that problem.
Thank you so much for this to it is very helpful,
I use my knees in my bed to wrap my yarn
I use my knees, too!
Fun video. I spin so haven't done it that way. But..... Cold steam? Lol what's that? Had your coffee yet? Or am I hearing that wrong?
I should have said cold mist. From a humidifier, for example. I always need more coffee ;)
@@PurlTogether Well fun! I had no idea humidifiers put out a cool mist (no children here). Learned something else already! :)
Great tips but I see lots of safety risks using the tea kettle directly over flame and without using a tool instead of hands and arms to hold the yarn while steaming. Add warning label BEFORE demonstrating.
Would a portable steamer also work?
I've never used one, but I don't see why not.
This was amazing! Thank you..
