    As a Functional Skills teacher myself I have recently found these and they have helped me with my practice. I especially like the way you explain Q7, I had never considered this method. What I would do with students is to get them to work out the price of the item after the double discount. Then I get them to work out the original price using reverse percentages so they can then work out 50% of that and compare. I am going to use your methos in future.

    Q12 you can split the fraction and speed in 2. 130kph becomes 65, 5/8 becomes 5/4. Then the equation is 65 x 5 over 4 = 325 / 4 = 81.25

    • @SimonHTT
      @SimonHTT  Місяць тому +1

      Yes that's fine if you can see a way to simplify the calculation down into smaller numbers, but not everyone will spot things like that.
      Note that because he is driving at 80 miles per hour, which is less than 81 r2, the answer should be yes, and not no as I said in the video!

    • @SimonHTT
      @SimonHTT  11 місяців тому

      Glad you like the videos. With approximation (or estimation) questions it is up to you to choose what you round to. I used to the nearest 10 and it sounds like the other video used the nearest 5. Both would get you the marks as they are suitable for the numbers involved. However, I see the purpose of approximating to make things easier to work out, so you can do a quick calculation in your head. By rounding to 25 it's simplified the calculation a bit but not as much as if it had been rounded to 20.

    Could you please have another look on Q13 (calculator). The sparrows in 2018 are actually on 5 not 5.2 (check with ruler please) so I think they would not change, also since they would not change the answer should be No as the headline states "birds in decrease" which would be partly incorrect? I might be wrong here but I must say your video is very helpful :)

    • @SimonHTT
      @SimonHTT  3 роки тому +2

      Hi Weronika, I agree I appear to have picked up 5.2 instead of 5.0 but it doesn't really affect the comments or conclusions. For one type of bird there is little (or no) change and for the other there is a definite reduction. So overall you could say garden birds are in decline. However, one thing not mentioned, which I suspect is not trying to be covered by the question, is the number of other garden birds. There could be much more robins or starlings over 10 years but we don't have any data on that. With these questions they are always open to interpretation and they just want to see you can use the data and make a sensible comment on it.
      Glad you found the video helpful!

    • @SimonHTT
      @SimonHTT  2 роки тому

      Hi, it may be worth pointing out that you don't have to do level 2 before you re-take your GCSE, unless your college makes it a requirement for enrolment. There are arguments for doing so, as it can give you more time to get a good understanding of some of the key concepts, but level 2 doesn't really go into some of the bigger topics like graphs (straight line and quadratics) and algebra. Assuming you plan to use a college or course provider, see what courses are available as there may be something more tailored to GCSE as your end goal without going via level 2.
      And don't worry about your age, I see people much older than you passing level 2 and GCSE, it's never too late!

    I thought it will be divide again 70% to 25% . I'm bit confused there?

    • @SimonHTT
      @SimonHTT  2 роки тому +1

      Hi, I'm not sure what dividing you're referring to in the first line but let me try explaining another way.
      Pretend the starting price is £100. If there is 30% off then we find 30% of £100, which is £30, and take it away. We are left with £70.
      We then need to take 25% off that reduced price. So we find 25% of £70, which is £17.50, and take it away. This leaves £52.50. £52.50 is clearly not better than half price as half price would be £50 and so the notice is misleading.

    • @SimonHTT
      @SimonHTT  3 роки тому

      Thanks for the comment. Some of these questions can appear to have no practical application but imagine you are a roofer. You need to put 648 tiles on the roof of a new building and have done 108 so far. You want to know how far through the job you are so you can work out how much longer it will take to finish. 108/648 simplifies to 1/6 so you are a sixth of the way through the job.

      @SimonHTT  2 роки тому

      Are you getting feedback from the exam each time? For example, whether you're getting closer to passing or which topics you're losing more marks on. It may help to plan each question before starting to write any answers or workings. Firstly, look at how many marks are available. Broadly speaking, you get one mark for every step in a question. So you can use this to try and work out what needs to be done at each stage. This also gives you a chance to calm yourself so you are fully prepared before you pick up your pen to start writing.
      These practice papers are really useful but if you have lots of gaps in your maths knowledge then it's better to try and plug some of those first.

    Running out of time for the non calculator paper seems the biggest worry.

    • @SimonHTT
      @SimonHTT  2 роки тому +2

      I agree. Worth bearing in mind that you have (very approximately) a minute and a half for every mark. It's worth setting a timer for each individual question when you practise these so you get used to how long you actually have. This should make you better disciplined and more aware of whether you are under or over time as you go along.

    • @SimonHTT
      @SimonHTT  2 роки тому

      Yes! I have no idea where the extra 1p came from. These errors do sometimes creep in when I'm trying to work out, write and talk all at the same time. In this instance I think I would have got away with it without losing a mark as I had calculated the correct value and the comparison was to £20... but well spotted!

    Stupidly hard and im tryna get an apprenticeship but looks like I won't as I cannot understand this shit

    • @SimonHTT
      @SimonHTT  10 місяців тому

      You might not understand it now but that doesn't mean you can't learn it, even if maybe you haven't had a great time with maths in the past. For an apprenticeship you will need Level 2 maths, but that doesn't mean Level 2 is the right place to start. If this paper isn't making sense I would suggest getting the book linked below.
      www.amazon.co.uk/Maths-Basics-Functional-June-Haighton-ebook/dp/B08X1R136C/ref=sr_1_1?crid=1SFNXWZ7CZPQ3&keywords=maths+the+basics&qid=1697040584&sprefix=maths+the+basics%2Caps%2C70&sr=8-1
      This is great because it doesn't just tell you what you need for Level 2 but also tells you all the things you're expected to know already. You might find for some topics you want to go back to Level 1, or even Entry 3, establish the basics, then build up to where you need to be. I have got L1 and E3 papers on my channel so you can use these to find the right starting point for you.
      I would guess that the majority of people using my channel don't start off as wanting to learn maths, they do it because they have to progress in their studies or career, and that can be great motivation. Best of luck!!

      @SimonHTT I'm trying to get an accident repair apprenticeship and I've been told I have to have a level 2 so I'm going to persist with it as it's an A Level. I'm on a college course until December and I've learned more than I have in the last 10 years. I'm 28 now and have a career I want to do that can offer me a very good future in the long-term. I'll continue watching your videos and studying as much as possible.

    Q8 you never put ur decimal back in?

    • @SimonHTT
      @SimonHTT  2 роки тому +1

      If I had only ignored the decimal point on one of the numbers I would have needed to put it back in. But because I removed it from both numbers (by moving the decimal point 2 places in both numbers) it doesn't go in. For example, If you have £2.50 divided by £0.50, in other words, how many 50p coins are there in £2.50, you can multiply both by 10 to get, £25 divided by £5. Both ways the answer is 5, with no decimal point needed.

    Turning 130km into miles we go like this: 130 x 5/8 which is 81.25 right?
