I can't believe this video only has 97 views almost a month later. Great straight forward, informative video without any extra crap. I learned a few good tricks from this that I never knew. Keep making more helpful vids like this. Thanks!!!
I appreciate the video. Do you have any tips or videos on how to handle a double closet door wear the top of the two doors are fine but the bottom of one of the doors is forward or the other door a quarter inch?
Thank you, I’m about to hang some prehung french doors in front of my office opening. I a little worried 😧 because I’ve never done anything like this before, but to pay 💰 someone would cost me more than the doors 😢. The shim trick is just what I needed to see. Thanks for sharing and I will follow up next week to let you know how it went. 😊
Yes, if you look closely you'll see them but just like any other fastener you'll need to put caulk or wood filler over it and paint. No difference... Thanks for watching! Mike
The two things that would get me thrown off the job would be #1 lifting up the jamb off the floor. You set your low side and cut your high side even if you have to cut the door also.#2 using screws in the finished face. You take the door stop off and put the screws behind it and/or you take the screws out of the hinge and put them behind those. And # 3 is what i do which is glue all my miters and PL the back of my casing..
So the walkway I'm installing doors too was cut large 1inch on top and 2inch on the sides after removing trim. The trim is 1/2inch thich and already flush (held by shims) haha. My question is besides the look of the doorway do I absolutely want to remove the trim and if so -- is 2 inches to much to use shims or can I also cut 2x4's to do essentially the same!? Anyone that sees this thank you in advance.
Noob Question: My opening is 76". Because most prehung doors come in 72'. Can I make up that difference by adding an extra vertical 2x4 on each side of the door frame assembly?
Yes - I did this in another video. Watch here. ua-cam.com/video/oi000KZPPXk/v-deo.html I'd also watch my other how to install a door video ... it shows in detail how to do this as well, but its just one door but applies to two as well
Align edge of jamb (make flush) with drywall? Fine if drywall is plumb and flat. Suppose it’s not … that’s the typical case. You’ll need to address not just the gap where the closed doors meet when viewed standing away perpendicular from the doors, but the likely misalignment of door surfaces (when viewed from the wall near a hinge) that always happens at the bottom of the closed doors! Glossed over details create false confidence about the actual degree of difficulty involved in hanging double doors.
Within reason I’d rather the door be ‘flush’ with drywall vice plumb and sticking proud of drywall. Most walls are plumb enough for a door imo, but you’re not incorrect, door should be plumb in the ideal situation. Thanks dude ! Mike
What a hack. The jamb shouldn't be flush it should be plumb, both ways! If it's flush then great. You glossed over the fact that the doors won't close since they're too close together-no gap. The long screws should replace one of the hinge screws, not through the jamb....SMH, too many wrongs to document in one text...
Steve, I did not hack anything off this door; no saws were used at all. Correct, the jamb should be Flush and Plumb, agree or …. ? The doors did close; to adjust you have to manipulate the hinges, if you need to know how to do that, see video linked below as well as linked at the end of the video. If you are worried about the screw holes, they can be filled with wood filler and painted, link to wood filler below. As far as the other questions, please list, there’s plenty of room in the comment field to put all your questions. A very basic tutorial but leaves tremendous data out. You did not show how the screws went in and how you will finish the jamb. Did you countersink? Fill? Did not look it. Getting the door this "square is rarely an easy matter. Especially with older homes. Lastly this looks like a big box store door and so try this with a "real" door with plastered walls and a much older home. This video simply does not show ALL the aspects of hanging a real door that will outlast the present owner.
I love the critics and their detailed opinions. Doors can be hung many different ways. Nice job.

That hack helped tremendously. I finish nailed the shims in place after I taped them in position. Thank you thank you

I hope it helped - doors are tough ...
How did it go? I'm about to do the same.
This video was so helpful. We successfully hung our prehung double doors using it!
The doors I am installing already has trim attached. One side pulls off. Makes it easy.
Ty I’m trying to convince my wife we can do this ourselves 👊🏽
CAn totally do it !!!! Just take your time and think about the door casing/finishing work. That the crappy part imo.
I’m trying to convince my husband we can do this ourselves !
Thank you for sharing what you know, very helpful.
Love all the snooty professionals that know everything. If it works and looks good who cares god damn! I love the simplistic KISS approach.
Hahah - it’s all part of being on UA-cam trying to help people. Comes with the territory !
Thanks Dude !
Mike
In the end after doors are in, will you be able to see the 3 in. SPAX screw heads....? becuase i've never seen screw heads showing in a door jamb....
Yes, if you look closely you'll see them but just like any other fastener you'll need to put caulk or wood filler over it and paint. No difference...
Thanks for watching!
Mike
Do you have a video for installing the door hardware (doorknob) for doors like this.
i don't, i'm sorry...
@@patrickkelly721 let me know when you find it. that’s the video im looking for

Next time will you show people exactly what to do to change each reveal? Thank you for the video
you have to manipulate the hinges. see this video

@@FamilyDIYtv thank you so much for the response and for the videos.
Some good pointers. You have a tough group of viewers, lol.
lol - thankyou ! the majority of comments/viewers are overwhelmingly positive ! constructive criticism is always welcome tho ! thanks again

Your doors were still hitting when you went to close them. What did you do to make them close easily?
If adjusting with shims doesn’t work then you need to adjust by slightly bending the Hinges.. I have video on that, on my channel.
Do you just take out the shims on the bottom after fastening the sides in. Is it okay to float at that point?
No need to…

For the top, it’s okay. But for the sides I’d add a some wood, make it perfectly plumb. Then use shims.
Noob Question: My opening is 76". Because most prehung doors come in 72'. Can I make up that difference by adding an extra vertical 2x4 on each side of the door frame assembly?
Great question. Yes, you can pad the framing with 2x4's or whatever you need to make it the correct rough opening.
Works for
Me looks good
Awesome!!!👏
Does that door actually function well or does it still rub in the center?
Functions fine, but if it rubbing in the center you may need to adjust hinges. See video below
ua-cam.com/video/BAulxmEwUrc/v-deo.html
Can you use 2 regular doors and install them as french doors or you have to get the french door kit?
Yes - I did this in another video. Watch here.

Good god man, give the door some privacy..

Sorry man but this is over complicating things. It's not that hard.
