Thank you Charlie and Dan, exactly what I needed to crack on with my own model figures. Wishing you all the best for a full and speedy recovery Charlie!
Excellent Charlie I do enjoy watching Dan painting at shows and I try to copy what he does as much as possible. Watching like this means you're not trying to listen to what he says and other folk side tracking him. Enjoyed it Charlie look forward to part 2 cheers Andy
Hi again Charlie. Always interesting and a bit different. What a clever guy. Don't think I will ever attempt this, but love watching clever people and how they perform. Looking forward to your OO figure and good luck! Keep on top of that skin cancer. In Oz we're very aware. Thanks again for all your efforts and The excellent way you produce your videos. Stay safe.
A really helpful video Charlie! I've painted a fair few 00 scale figures in my time, but Dan's work is outstanding. His method of glueing to a piece of wood is simply genius.. I'm about to paint some 2" high model Daleks for my partner, so will be using Dan's techniques on them...
Hi Charlie. Hope your spots heal well and quickly. Thank you for a delightful video. It was so interesting, and informative. I found Dan's tips so helpful for sny hobby involving fine and intricate painting.
Good morning Charlie! This was most informative! I was impressed by what a difference initially adding highlights and lowlights to the model made! I'm looking forward to seeing your go at a OO figure! I'd love to see an N gauge figure painted too, as I'm sure there are some subtleties in the technique used, or maybe not? All the best, Ian.
Loved' the video , the last time I remember painting my railway figures was a boy at 14yrs, now at 62yrs I can see where I went wrong Ho!Ho!. Fantastic to watch an learn the technique of painting layers like a Photoshop . Stay healthy and looking forward to Part II.
Wonderful video. Takes me back to when I used to pop around to see a friend & help him paint war-gaming figures, a while ago, when used to live in Somerset up until recently. Looking forward to episode 2 of this one. 👍👍
Charlie, thank you for introducing Dan to me. Some really interesting, and very useful tips there in Part 1. I had not seen doing the highlights and darklights before painting using some white and black. Brilliant. I am a fan of acrylics, and have a good selection of Vallejo paints, and do thin them down, I put a few drops of an acrylic wetting agent into my water to make some "wet water", don't use detergent for painting figures and structures, the foam seems to spoil it. Good luck with the skin cancer treatment, as we get older, it is important to look after ourselves. Cheers, and thank you for sharing, stay safe, and happy modelling, Michael
@@shauntaylor9251 Thank you, I had to look up what a slapchop video was. If you had mentioned wargaming minis, and zenithal highlighting, I would have know straight away. I think the issue is size of the model. I model in HO, which is 1:87, CHarlie is OO which is 1:76 scale, and Dan did an O Scale Mini - 1:43, or there abouts. Wargaming is usually somewhere between 15 mm and 32 mm, I think the common is 28 mm. The issue is getting the figure to not be blown away when you use the airbrush, as a 6 foot person is only 20 mm high. I still have some figure I need to find. Cheers, and thank you for adding to the converstion. Michael
Hi Charlie, hope all goes well with skin cancer scare 🙏, that figure was painted brilliantly, can’t wait to watch you have a go at a oo gauge 😜, take care
Charlie, another brilliant video, fantastic step by step guide to figure painting I have only recently started to experiment with figure painting and this was very informative. Please look after yourself and keep well
Great video Charlie! As a trained artist, these are the best techniques that anyone can attempt...(Hope the skin cancer heals quickly for you - we are super aware of sc in Australia as you can imagine) Can't wait for part two, because I have approximately 100 N Scale (NOCH) figures to paint for my layout but I doubt I can get such detail!! Cheers from Melbourne, Australia
Very interesting Charlie .. as a member of the same club as you , u know I paint figures too .. I have definitely picked up some great tips .. must try the 2 hands touching tip .. I use different process to Dan , but I can see it’s much quicker using his technique.. think I will try to combine a bit of both .. Dan is a smashing fella and will look for him next week at NEC .. looking forward to next week .. best wishes with the health issue .. Lance
Hi Charlie that was great I was amazed he never used the dry brush technique for his highlights but never the less very good, I enjoyed that Charlie I look forward to part two that should be fun lol. Great video thank you
hi Charlie first of all hope everything is ok with your skin .wow how talented is Dan who knew you could make a living out of figure painting well done Dan look forward to part 2
Great and very interesting video Charlie, who’d have thought you could make living out of painting model figures and buildings. Looking forward to part 2. Thanks Charlie
Great tutorial Charlie. You definitely come up with interesting topics to help all of us with our hobby. Get well soon. Hopefully all will be clear sailing for your health in the near future. Be safe.
Hi Charlie, I have painted quite a few very acceptable figures over the past few years in various scales from ‘N through to 1/24 and found this to be very interesting. I have been a fan of Dan and his work but not really seen him paint them. Interestingly his thoughts on paint is a bonus and I will be giving his methods of shading a go.. Looking forward to the Charlie lesson next week. Take care and hopefully all will be well with the skin..All the best, Chris
Charlie take care of yourself .Had a similar scare last year .Thankfully all good. I find figure painting very therapeutic and have many Modelu figures .They are superb .I use pringle crisp carton tops for mixing paint with an oo brush .Good luck with the painting next week
An excellent and informative Charlie. I love the way Dan is so enthusiastic about painting model figures, and his knowledge of this. Equally, I admire your thoroughness and honesty. It also illustrates the different strengths and skills that different people can bring to the hobby. I think it would be fascinating to write up a personal spec for people to apply to the post of railway modeller.
Hi Charlie. Good luck with the health issue. You are in my thoughts. You made a good point early on regarding the "oversize" of OO Gauge figures. I've always thought this was the case, as placing a 2-man crew on a steam loco footplate is often a tight squeeze, but as anyone who has stood in the cab of a loco knows, there's ample room for 4 people.
With products and paints from the modern miniature/wargaming painting world there’s so many good products to paint model railway figure quickly and easily. Citadel Contrast Paints & Army Painter Speedpaints are superb, consistency of washes and excellent pigment coverage.
This is perfect timing, Charlie. I just received a package with 400 unpainted HO scale human figures. Thay made a larger pile than I had anticipated, but with your help, I will get through this project over the winter! Could not be more ecstatic.
Another very interesting and good video, and some good tips for figure painting , hope all goes well with the treatment, my dad is going through cancer treatment at present but thankfully they caught it early so as you can imagine we have all been worried, but he is in the bestcare with some amazing healthprofessionals, take care.
Very well produced Charlie and equally informative. Very much looking forward to Part Two. A steady hand is something I have never really had, but Dan's advice has provided many pointers. Hope all goes well with your medication. Take care and all the best. Nige
I’ve just found Army Painter Air paints. Already thinned for use in airbrushes but great for figure painting by brush if you’re not confident in thinning your paint.
Good little video, I've not done any model railway figure painting for a very long time, a bit on the tiny side for me, as my sight is not what it used to be. I have done some of the Warhammer/Games workshop figures and a couple of dragons.. I tend to feel a little impatient when waiting for the one colour to dry before adding the next one! Hope that you get well soon, take care !
Interesting video. The shaky hands tip looks like it may be useful. Interesting re brushes too - I'd always used OO or OOO brushes for figures when I had eyes that worked for painting figures. Look forward to the second video to see if his O gauge techniques translate to your OO experience. I don't think I'll be using his suggestion to buy Modelu figures for populating coaches. Cheapo figures with a matte varnish/wash in the interior and a few of Noch's legless passengers in the window seats Hope all goes well with the diagnosis.
Thanks Charlie for covering off a topic that presents many challenges, having Dan explain his approach is really useful and I certainly have some take aways on Pt1. I await Pt2 for more takeaways(!).
Absolutely amazing! It's easy when you know how.... Sadly, with my shaky hands, this skill is beyond me, however this tutorial is compelling and thoroughly enjoyable. Good luck Charlie, I will be 'ringside' cheering you on.
Great Video Charlie, I met Dan at GETS a few weeks ago very nice lad, he spoke to me about Airbrushing as I was looking at buying one, he spent a while with me explaining pros and Cons etc also a few how to's, he was very patient with me, I have since bought one and am getting used to it. I have also viewed your Videos on that subject. Anyway Back to this video, really liked it very informative and looking forward to the next one. Big Thank you to both of you. Regards Colin
A fascinating video, seeing the master at work. I recently started painting a large unpainted set of Preiser HO figures I picked up in Austria many years ago, so this video is very well timed for me. However, Dan was painting O gauge, which I imagine is a little easier than OO/HO. So I am really looking forward to part 2 and your attempts at OO figures. I think your eyes are about 10 years younger than mine, so I expect your efforts will be superior to mine. Cannot wait for Friday. Good luck and keep well.
I've got a batch of OO Pendon figures and my paints have arrived (o local stockists). Great to have Dan's masterclass. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Looking forward to part 2 Charlie. Cheers
Very interesting watching his technique. Have some white metal figures to do, so, quite a timely video. Thanks Charlie. Be interesting to see how you get on mate. Arthur
As primarily a military painter ,I can highly recommend Vallejo acrylics . They are a bit like Kadee couplings of the model rail world. ie been around for a long time but still the best but with many imitations around. A good tip is to remove the dropper head and place a couple of bits of off cut rail into the paint. Replace the head. This will make shaking the bottle much easier . Great vid on a much needed topic.
Some great tips there for painting figures. 00 guage being smaller, and more of a challenge, but I will have a go at painting my Stan and Ollie figures delivering the piano……Many Thanks Charlie😇
Love Dan’s work so this was great to watch. Have painted a couple of O scale chaps and it was ok but 00 is where I will be interested to see how you get on Charlie.
Hi Charlie, very professional interview, switching cameras seamlessly. It was very natural and worked very well, well done to you both. The figure really came to life each time Dan added a new colour, a superb result. Look forward to seeing how you get on in part 2. Hope you get well soon, I thought you had been doing some wiring under the boards!! All the best!!
This is an interesting new format Charlie, I like this idea of a Part 1 where a professional person demonstrates a skill and then a Part 2 where you have a go at doing it yourself. Perhaps you could extend it to other “specialist” type subjects like making trees for example or railway tracks in road or hard surfaces. Anyway, I’ve learnt a few tricks in this video and look forward to seeing how you get on in Part 2. Take care of that skin cancer Charlie, keep your head covered outside even when you don’t think it’s sunny. Maybe it’s time to invest in a Chadwick Parkway baseball cap ? I wear one all the time when I’m outdoors because (as you know !) I have a similar “hairstyle” to you ! All the best mate 👍🏻
Hi Charlie, if you want to explore figure painting more there are several figures online who might be able to help, Duncan Rhodes is one who springs to mind. Dan is very good at what he does, and has developed a style that works for him, however there are other techniques out there which are useful for figure painting, slapchop for example. It would be nice to see these explored too.
Hi Charlie. I enjoyed the video and have a couple of suggestions for any further videos you may decide to produce on the subject of painting models. Would it be possible to have an 'over the shoulder' view from the perspective of the painter, so we can see the object from a similar angle with a clearer view of the brushstrokes used and the amount of paint applied? Another idea would be a video on how to correct mistakes when painting, either figures, locos and rolling stock or scenery. It's great to see videos where everything goes smoothly, which is what we all aspire to, however novices rarely have everything go to plan and need help rectifying mistakes! Many thanks, Andy
Thanks for this video, Charlie! It was very timely for me as I've recently purchased a couple of HO scale ModelU figures. And fortunately I already have a good range of Vallejo paints. Cheers from Wisconsin!
Great video Charlie - really interesting how Dan applies highlights and shadows as the undercoat. I’m curious to see if this technique is even possible on the N scale figures, so I will have a go next time around. So far I’ve been using thin colour coats over the grey colour of the Modelu prints but when fully dry, dusting on a very light dry brush of off-white really brings out the details and creases on these figures brilliantly! In N scale I’ve found a magnifying headset with multiple lenses and LEDs almost essential, along with a 0000 size brush and a sharpened cocktail stick for any buttons. Once or twice I’ve left a foot or even a leg behind on the sprue if I was a little rough removing the supports - these figures really are tiny! All the best in your recovery, Charlie. Hope the cream does the trick 👍🏻 Daniel
Hope you get better soon and looking forward to part 2.
Many thanks for your concern, Richard, that’s most kind. Regards, Charlie.
Thank you Charlie and Dan, exactly what I needed to crack on with my own model figures. Wishing you all the best for a full and speedy recovery Charlie!

Thanks mate, I’m so pleased that you found the video interesting. Regards, Charlie.
Thanks, Colin, very kind of you to say so. I’m sure Dan will read these comments. Regards, Charlie.
Thanks David, I’m so pleased that you found it interesting and I do hope that you have subscribed. Regards Charlie.
I've got a batch of OO Pendon figures and my paints have arrived (o local stockists). Great to have Dan's masterclass. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Looking forward to part 2 Charlie. Cheers
Thanks David, I’m so pleased you found it interesting. Regards, Charlie.
Another brilliant video Charlie!
Thanks, MLS, regards Charlie
Very interesting watching his technique. Have some white metal figures to do, so, quite a timely video. Thanks Charlie. Be interesting to see how you get on mate. Arthur
Thanks Arthur, I’m so pleased that you enjoy it. Regards, Charlie.
Great video Charlie ! He makes it look so easy ! 😂 looking forward to part 2 ! And wishing you a speedy recovery!
Thanks, Lee, that’s most kind. Regards, Charlie.
Look after that head Charlie! Good luck with your figure painting. Dan made it look easy, I’d be in a right mess. Looking forward to part two 👍🏻
Thanks Joe, I’m so pleased that you found it interesting. Regards, Charlie.
An interesting comment, Garth. I’ve been popping a small ball bearing in mine. Regards, Charlie.
i Think i met that figure painter guy at Gets painting a modelu scan for a young lad...very nice chap and great work
That sounds like the guy Kerrie, a real gentleman. Regards, Charlie.
All the best Charlie. I'm hoping to get 2 Modelu OO figures soon so all figure painting tips will come in useful.
That’s great news, Professor Pt, and good luck with your project. Regards, Charlie.
Some great tips there for painting figures. 00 guage being smaller, and more of a challenge, but I will have a go at painting my Stan and Ollie figures delivering the piano……Many Thanks Charlie😇
Thanks, David, I’m so pleased that you enjoyed the video. Regards, Charlie.
Love Dan’s work so this was great to watch. Have painted a couple of O scale chaps and it was ok but 00 is where I will be interested to see how you get on Charlie.
Only a week ago, Mark, regards Charlie
Great video! Thanks
Thanks, Michael, that’s most kind. Regards, Charlie.
Thanks David, I’m so pleased that you enjoyed the video including the interview section. Regards, Charlie.
Many thanks Bryan, for both your concern and advice. I’ll be baseball capped tomorrow, as we are out on the Somerset Levels. Regards Charlie
Many thanks for your thoughts, I have no idea what slap chop is, regards Charlie
Thanks, Andy, an interesting comment. I will revisit the painting once my skills have grown. Stay safe, regards Charlie.
Thanks for this video, Charlie! It was very timely for me as I've recently purchased a couple of HO scale ModelU figures. And fortunately I already have a good range of Vallejo paints. Cheers from Wisconsin!
That’s great news, Andrew and good luck with your project. Regards, Charlie.
Hope the cream does the trick 👍🏻
Daniel
Many thanks for your concern, Daniel, and for such an interesting comment. Regards, Charlie.
Excellent
Thanks, Peter, that’s most kind. Regards, Charlie.
Hope all goes ok with the skin. Wishing you a speedy recovery.
Thanks PG, that’s most kind. Regards, Charlie.
Many thanks guys
You’re very welcome Darz.
Regards Charlie
Really interesting Charlie, I don't know about you but I need Glasses and Magnifying Glasses, and still mess up the detail 😊👍
I know the feeling Alan, it is so difficult once your eyes have passed their peak! Regards Charlie
