Amazing demo! There isn’t enough content out there on everything the RX7 can do. It’s such a cool little time capsule of retro sounds. It was funny seeing the Junkie XL section in the beginning as my RX7 is the one in the video I picked up when he sold off a bunch of gear on Reverb.
I've had the RX7 for years and never really recorded anything with it. At the same time I just couldn't part from it for some reason. Thanks for reminding me why! This thing has so much potential. I just hooked it up to the octatrack and decided to do a little search on UA-cam for inspiration. So thank you for that also!
This is GREAT! I absolutely love my RX-5 (love your vid on that too!) and with the RX5USB it really takes it up a notch. I’ll never get rid of mine. Maybe someday I’ll get the RX-7 too!
I use the RX5 and The RX5USB card from Pharmasonic, what a great tool to add your own drum samples. I got a good library now of old and new Drum Machine sounds.
Boi when I was young growing up on the small island Commonwealth of dominica between 1995 and somewhere the early 2000s before the akai was out bands like the wck and serenade band made killer Caribbean music out of these. Everyone was talking about the rx7 drum machine it was the hero for live band performances great review☺👍
This is exactly my point - back then people used RX7 to make full blown tracks, and yes, I heard great Caribbean music made on RX7 and RX5! Thanks for watching!
@@MusicianParadise yes very true also please if you have a least 5 minutes listen to the starting of a song called male maye first serenade band you will see how the rx7 beats Rick out also a song called train by wck band😊👍
@@johnathancommodore9642 Oh, those songs are prime examples of RX7 in most musical settings, specially train by wck track - they used RX7 to it full potential ! Thanks for sharing!

You could probably do as you said and produce an entire film score on this machine alone without external processing. However, would you do all of it from the front panel? I would probably try attaching an external MIDI controller myself.
Yes, this is a good idea, RX7 can be played as a sound module, but I believe the deep sound editing features are not accessible by MIDI, you really have to dig deep into it from the front panel. So, you have to prepare the sound design first, save it as edited sounds and then play them by MIDI
That’s correct, I still have this drum machine, and know it from using it in the 90s for about 10 years. It sounds solid. The effect stuff is kind of unique. It sounds real good in the extreme high spectrum. The low sound spectrum is absolute ground shaking it’s got that deepness that travels through your body like a real bass. Once you edit the sounds and save them to one of the 16 pad squares then you can make beats using the step recording or real live recording with auto quantizing. Again the deep end is extremely impressive. This video shows only some of the tricks.
Haha remember me? I’ve just come here from the link you sent me from the RX5 Love this One tip: Try & get the low conga on a quick pitch bend down and it almost sounds like a TR909 punchy kick 👍🏾
Thanks for the video! Still have my RX7! Got it in 88. I never got into the deep editing you showed, thanks! The demo’s are pretty goofy. I’m an arena rocker, not a Caribbean hotel entertainer.
Just watched this after being a bit curious about it. Now I'm heading over to ebay to buy one! Thanks for this one! I don't think Florian did a video of this on bad gear yet, so prices are still reasonable. lol
Hey Music Paradise, what amazing video this is. I saw you made an rx5 video as well, but this video is more selling! I would love a video on the rx5 of this quality as well.
I'm planing a video about Yamaha RX5 in comparison to Roland R8, so stay tuned! My RX5 video is very old, one of the first videos I did on YT, I did't had a clue what I'm doing lol!
All the Yamaha RX family was very popular in the Caribbean music community of the 80's , thank you for mentioning "burning flames" band - I'm learning a lot!
@@MusicianParadise Sure thing. A friend of mine had the RX7 back in like 88 we had a lot of fun rapping over the bass tracks he provided for us. Carry on.
@@MusicianParadise i have seen a video of the rx-5 before doing similar things and thought wow!! now i see it was also your video : ) didn´t knew the rx-7 is capaple of doing also this crazy stuff. thx for the hint dude!!
Probably RX5 - better resell value, more sound editing features (but very limited sound set), separate audio outputs (+faders) and, with the addition of retro-fit memory card you can even load your own sounds in to it. look for RX7 if you planing to use the sounds of the RX7 a lot
This is a great demo and argument for the RX-7... There is one locally that I'm eyeing, however I'm wondering if I'm perhaps smarter to just load up and Rx 7 sample pack into my deluge. Any thoughts pro or con regarding this?
Deluge is a beast! Samples of RX7 is freely available, but I don't think samples of RX7 is something special. However, the internal sound engine of RX7 (as well as RX5 and other siblings) is quite special - due to the limitations of 80's technology it just sounds different in comparison to the modern gear. One thing what sets RX7 apart from other Yamaha drum machines of the 80's is the famous MIDI delay (with pitch and pan parameters) which brings a lot of variety to the sounds at the expense of RX7 single stereo output. IMHO, if you can get it cheap in good working condition it may be worth purchasing. Bear in mind you will have to spend some time to learn how to operate the machine, to get the best out of it. Hope it helps!
@@MusicianParadise hey thanks for getting back. Yeah that delay does sound unique. And I'm a fan of that 12bit PCM crushed goodness... Clearly evocative of an era to me. But you bring up the issue of learning the Yamaha hardware. I've spent time with an R5 which I found maddening, and have used plenty of in the box style groove machines and so on... Which is partly what's putting me on the fence with buying the hardware RX-7. I mean if it's sampled, then I guess those sound qualities are... In the samples. And the deluge does have at least it's own sampling mangling abilities, plus sequencing is a dream on it. Just still slightly uncertain whether that's gonna help get that feeling from this piece of kit.
@@damiangolfinopoulos9164 R5 - do you mean Roland R5 ? or Yamaha RX5? - just because Roland drum machines have a pretty different workflow. You can read a few pages of RX7 manual to get an idea of what it takes to program such a machine. Yes, 12bit PCM samples are fun, but here are a few things to consider. Not only do the samples inherit qualities, but the ancient programming algorithms of internal processing in conjunction with vintage DAC and analog circuits can impact how we perceive the sound of those samples, especially when some internal processing is applied to alter them. Also, most likely, you will find samples of Yamaha RX drum machines sampled with 16bit/44,1kHz or 48kHz. So, it may sound quite different compared to 12bit samples, mainly when using some pitch-shifting algorithms. One thing I would try before buying RX7 - download RX7 samples (you can find the link in the description of my video), load them into Deluge, and try to apply all sorts of processing to the samples. If you'll find the results satisfying, probably there's no need to bother purchasing bulky RX7!
At the first glance, the RX7 is ticking all the boxes. Yss, RX7 not DX7! Lets see if this late 80s bad boy can make a post apocalyptic, techo cyber punk mash up!
I miss my RX7. You’ve really shown why I loved it so much.
I used to love detuning and layering the snare sounds.
I miss my RX7 as well. I traded it for an RX5.
Sold mine in the 90s - not because I had found s.th. better but due to a general musical hiatus. Now, making music again, I miss it so much.
